I am still in such shock and have a perma-grin right now. I have taught first grade for 23 years. My mom and grandmother are/were home ec teachers. I got my home ec credential (every one else calls it Family and Consumer Sciences except my state) and hoped there would be an opening at some point in my career. Not a lot of schools that offer this elective and many schools closed it after they couldn't find anyone credentialed to teach it. I am over the moon a position opened up, in a school I adore, with the most beautiful classroom I've ever seen, and I got the job!
I know there are a few current and former Home Ec peas around. I would love and appreciate anything you have to say. The good, the bad, and the ugly. Along those lines, anything about middle school would be great!
I've been teaching 32 to 35 first graders with no aide, no prep, every subject is on me, with at least 1/4 of my class needed additional academic/behavioral services. I'm so excited about a prep and also wondering how will I ever remember all their names!

I loved home ec and I even got a scholarship to study interior design if I had wanted to. I did very well in it and it was by far my favourite class!
Also CONGRATULATIONS!!!! I hope you love teaching it because I loved taking it!

Congrats! I remember taking home ec and learning to sew a top using a pattern and also how to cook. Wish that class, along with shop, were still offered at schools.

Congratulations! I'm glad to see at least one state still calls it Home Ec. I enjoyed that class in middle school. Good luck to you!

In my state it's called Family and Consumer Science. My very good friend teaches in that area. She teaches grades 6-12.. 9-12th graders take her electives...one of which is a Food Science class and it's really cool! She has taught a business of baking class, international foods....You'll have to see what your school offers.

My husband taught high school and I taught elementary. Our problems were quite different in each grade, but at least he had more break time. Good luck.

Cool! We still have it in our schools - although finding teachers is getting to be tough.
I'm sure you'll be great!

Go you! I hated Home Ec with a passion when I was at school, but I know that was down to lousy teachers. While I still can’t sew, I loved knitting and crochet, and embraced cooking enthusiastically as soon as I left school.

Congratulations. I always liked home ec. I have never heard of teaching it to first graders, though! What sorts of things do you teach them at that age?

Congratulations!
What types of classes will you be teaching? Back in the dark ages when I had the class it was a semester of cooking and a semester of sewing. I'm assuming cooking is still a large part of it - what else has been added in recent years?

When I was in middle school home ec (at least as a 6th grader), half of it was for cooking and half for textiles (sewing). I still remember one of our sixth grade group projects for cooking-- shop from a list within a budget, then the teacher bought those things, and we (every group) had to cook a meal in the class period and invite a teacher as our guest. It was fun. We made tacos.

I really enjoyed Home Ec! I think all students should have a basic Home Ec and Shop for a semester each to prepare them for life! Congrats on the new job!

I loved home-ec as it was taught way back in the dark ages. Sewing was my favorite. For my 8th grade project I made a plaid two piece dress & jacket. It was a sleeveless sheath dress and the jacket was short-waisted, double-breasted with a large portrait collar. I had to match all the plaid. I don't know why my teacher allowed me to choose something so advanced but it turned out very well and I got an "A" in the class. The only food I can recall making is biscuits.

Great news! Congrats! I wish more schools would still offer Home Ec. What state are you in? I thought CA (because OC) but no? (no need to answer if I'm being too nosy)

Congratulations!!! I took Home Ec. all through Jr. High and High school. We had awesome teachers who loved what they taught and made the class so much fun. In my senior year of Home Ec. sewing, we had to make tailored and lined wool blazers. (I got a very good grade on it.) This was taught by a teacher who was also sewing her wedding dress during class. ( And it was beautiful!!) I learned many useful sewing skills in my years of Home Ec. I wish it was still taught in our school system. Many of my DD's friends have not got a clue as to how to sew on a button or fix a simple hem.

Congratulations on your new teaching position. I am a Home Ec. Major, though I never taught. I worked in an analytical chemistry lab— but that was years and years ago. However, I am grateful for the skills I was taught, and still use them. I. Made a pillowcase today for my Church’s ministry to Family Promise. I think we miss an important aspect of being healthy when we do not have hand skills.
