I’m curious, what are the benefits of being on a design team? Just free product? Or is there more to it than that?

Free product yes, and also notoriety and validation of your skills/work.

Free product yes, and also notoriety and validation of your skills/work. It seems like a lot of work/stress for $50 of product/month and some notoriety. I wonder how they do it. As soon as something becomes a requirement with a deadline it takes the fun out of it.

First access to the product if you're of the impatient/FOMO kind. All in all, it's the exclusivity of it all: have the product before it's released to the general public, have your work shown as an example to admire and follow, feel like you're part of a very small inside group that is particularly difficult to get into. And that's it. You essentially agree to work for free in a rigid system of deadlines and mandatory product use (sometimes within strict guidelines).

All the reasons above are why I stopped even applying. I've been on a number of design teams in the past. You work for free, meet deadlines, and get very little product compared to all the work you put in. The only design teams I even think of trying out for now are the ones that offer payment - and there aren't many. These companies get away with doing this because there will always be people who think it's a fair deal. No offense to anyone who's on a design team. It's just not enough compensation for all of my hard work and the skills I have honed over the past 17 years. And Lord knows I don't need any more product!!

I have never applied to a design team, but have thought about it. I would only apply to a company where I liked their product and used it anyway. Sometimes deadlines work for me. I am a procrastinator, so having a deadline means it will actually be finished.
I would hope, too, that anything I made for a design team is something I would actually use. I can spend hours on a card and earn nothing. I wouldn’t make something that is just going to sit in a pile, so while it may not be a lot of compensation, if it’s something I was going to make anyway, might as well be compensated for it.
A lot of people want the social media hits, too. If you get have one post per month for that product and you get 5 new IG followers each time, that’s 60 by the end of the year you may not have had.

This is precisely why I stepped down 3 years ago. Lots of work, high expectations and only a little back in compensation. That and I felt the team I was on had favorites, those who could slack off and still be fawned over while others who fulfilled their contracts were not appreciated. And after a while it can suck the joy out of scrapbooking for you. I'm much happier now working on my own thing and buying my own stuff.

I have been on various design teams in the past. They are worth it to me if (1) I really love the product and really want to use it on my pages and (2) the requirements are reasonable. I am on a design team that I love right now. I get free product that I actually love to use and the requirements are both reasonable and also give me the kick in the pants that I need to make pages that I want to make (otherwise I might get terribly behind). It's also a little nice to get validation and positive feedback on my work. Design teams that do not offer products, or offer products that I have to stretch to use on my pages (i.e. I don't love them), or that have requirements that are too much for me to reasonably accomplish are not worth it.

I have been on several teams that gave me product AND paid me for my work. It was always wonderful "fun" money as I called it. I loved being on design teams but have stepped down from them all because it's not what I want to focus on any longer. I want to create for me now as I feel led.

Being in a design team seems to put people on a pedestal and make them into some kind of icon for the hobby. People also see it as a stepping stone into scrapbooking becoming their full time job. It’s like winning an award with free product in return. Like a big pat on the back from brands.

I enjoy, playing with new products, a good challenge, and deadline. It's why I apply to any team that would work for me. (Products I already use or really like) I've been on a couple really small teams and really liked it. I don't enjoy blogging so teams that require a lot of posts each month I don't apply to as I wouldn't enjoy that, but some teams I've seen do Instagram or Facebook posts and I do those anyway with my own posts so I apply to those teams.

I was on two design teams about 10 years ago. It was simpler then because you didn't need snapchat/instagram/facebook/blog all your projects. I got tons of product and got paid $50-$100 for each piece they used at a show as well as $100 for working one show.
I enjoyed it but in the end, the requirement guidelines got old.

I had a girlfriend who was quite successful in the industry, and as far as I know she isn't anymore, but years ago, she gifted my group of retreat friends, a HUGE lot of scrapbook supplies she didn't use/want.. I mean enough supplies for 8 people (which was about an inch of paper per person plus embellishments, etc.) I don't know what design team she was on (I am pretty sure Club Scrap was one) but she had enough freebies for a lifetime.. shoot I can't even find her online.. Erika, Ericka Gumm.. something like that (I can't check on FB right now)..

Almost anything that I have to do instantly becomes a chore. I am pretty sure being on a DT wouldn't be for me. I would also hate to use so much pink in so many lines. Just not a flower and pink girl.

I’m on a DT for digital products and I applied because I liked the products but also just to challenge myself. I’m mainly a pocket scrapper and figured having a monthly deadline would keep me up to date this year. So far so good! I’m not a super talented scrapper by any means and like to think I represent the everyday scrapper who just wants to get their pages done!

LOL.. I kept putting a "C" in her name and forgetting the "H".. LOL... She was (still is I would assume) a sweet gal.. teeny tiny thing.... so so so creative. When I was at her house she had like an attic that was converted and it was adorable..all vintage style... I still have her Tag book too!!

She showed off her scrap space in the mag once and it was super cute. Vintage and eclectic. My dream craft room style.
