The Browder story haunts me. Especially recently with news stories about bondsmen running for office so they can keep bail and high bails in place. Simply disgusting. Jails should not in any way be a money making operations, and the bail system should be abolished. And, it isn't that the other stories aren't horrible, but the Browder situation went on for so long and amounts to torture. In a society where black men get arrested for sitting in a Starbucks, though, people aren't going to care about jailhouse suicides. For some, they are just happy those "scary people" were off the streets.

I do not beleive that Tyler Lumar or Sandra Bland committed suicide. I have read that it is thought that Tyler had an asthma attack and was left untreated and was not checked on, and it is now being covered up.
The story of Kalief Browder is both horrifying and heart breaking.

But Tyler Lumar was put in jail for a traffic fine THAT WAS PAID. he was wrongfully arrested and put in jail. I just want it to be clearly stated.

m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5804dfa4e4b0162c043cf0acKalief Browder died two years after he was released from Rikers Island, where he’d spent three years without being convicted of a crime. In 2010, at age 16, he was arrested for second-degree robbery, and spent three years jailed, awaiting trial for allegedly stealing a backpack. Two of those years were spent in solitary confinement. He maintained his innocence throughout his incarceration. He was unable to make the $3,000 bail, and unwilling to take a plea deal. When his family managed to raise the money, his bail was denied. This Wednesday, Akeem Browder is honoring his brother’s memory by asking politicians to commit to ensuring no one else falls victim to a broken justice system. Browder has created a pledge asking lawmakers and advocates to push for the elimination of “wealth-based detention” practices, which can force defendants to remain behind bars for weeks, months or ― as in Kalief’s case ― years, simply because they can’t afford to bail out. The pledge also asks lawmakers and advocates to make a commitment to “reduce jail populations with real speedy trial, discovery and bail reform.”
