I'm on day 5 of my kitchen painting project and I am losing steam. It is a lot of cabinets to paint. Whew! I should be done tomorrow and I have two questions about the finishing touches. I would love your opinion. You should know I ended up painting the ceiling and trim the same color white as the rest of the house. I painted the walls a light taupe. I am painting the cabinets a medium taupe. I am secretly wishing I had chosen a little darker but I'm too far in now to start over. I painted a medium orange around the 12" soffet. I love the orange.
Question one: I have decided the ugly shelf looked way too 70s for my taste so I am not putting it back up. I am going to opt for some open shelving and I plan to show off my fiestaware. What color shelves? Two wood looks to chose from. Dark brown (which would go with all my wood furniture in living and dining room) or medium wood (which would go with the hardwood floors in living and dining room). My other option is white. Or I could paint them to match the kitchen. Thoughts?
Question two: I am having a custom vinyl phrase made to go on the soffet above my sink. Soffet is orange. My choices include black, brown, gray, white, tan. She does have a few colors but I am thinking we probably want to keep it neutral. What would be your pick?

I am going to get new countertops. DH and I we're going to pick new ones out when he's home next weekend. Current countertops are cream and speckled with tan/gray flecks. They don't even look bad with the new paint.

I suggest not making decor decisions until all permanent fixtures (eg counters, cabinets) are (re)installed & you've adjusted to/lived with the new color scheme. If waiting isn't possible, & without a photo, I suggest white for both the shelf & lettering. Congratulations on your progress, & best wishes on finishing this kitchen project!

I can when I finish. Right now all doors are off. All appliances are out. It's a mess.

I just want to add...my house is very 1970s. This isn't a kitchen remodel and I'm not interested in anything too fancy. I just want to refresh things. My cabinets were chipped and needed new paint. My countertops are laminate and in bad shape and will be replaced with laminate. There is nothing high end or fancy about my house. I just thought since I was going to repaint the cabinets I would repaint the whole thing. I had $200 in Lowe's gift cards and I spent it on paint. I have five kids and I'm not planning to do more than paint until they leave home.

And the medium taupe looks brown or gray depending on how the light hits it. That's why I am kind of stuck on colors. My floor is white ceramic tile.

Given the additional information & its purpose to display colorful dishware, I also suggest painting the shelf white (to visually appear as part of the trim).
