So exciting, I finally get a turn. LOL. I mainly tell ppl to man up and eat it but this time I don't know. haha.
I bought an (expensive) bag of ground flax seed. Opened it, used it a few times. Stuck it in the cabinet. Then I found out it should be kept refrigerated. Toss it? Seems weird but I have no emotional attachments except to my money.

It would be a quality issue rather than safety, so if it doesn't smell stale I'd use it.

I think over time the oils will go bad, so I guess it depends on how long it's been in the pantry?

I would see if it smelled rancid. If not, try tasting a little bit. If it passes both of those, refrigerate it from now on and eat it without fear.

Funny you should ask about this! My husband found a bag of ground flax seed I had opened, then sealed and put in the freezer. It's been there for a few years, and it smelled rancid. Have you done the smell test?

It's my first bag of ground flax seed so I'm not sure exactly what it *supposed* to smell like but it doesn't smell horrible or like bad oil.
Not impressed by the taste but I wasn't when I opened it either. lol.

Flax seeds get rancid quickly after they are ground. Flax always tastes a little fishy to me, but I like the seeds in moderation. Since you were not impressed to start out with, I would toss them without tasting. I'm usually on the keep and use side of these posts.

Not impressed by the taste but I wasn't when I opened it either. lol. Flaxseed would smell old. I can't describe it other than that. When I had old flaxseed, I can smell the oil that was rancid. I would dump it if in question. Found this: When you eat rancid flaxseed, it harms your body. Rancid oil will be full of free radicals, which are rogue molecules that bombard and destroy your healthy cells. This increases the oxidative stress in the body and causes premature aging, weakens the immune system, slows down wound healing, among others. SaveSave

I'm actually working on reducing oxidative stress as we speak so better safe than sorry.
