Urinary incontinence.
there, I said it.
I am so SO tired of this. I wear Poise pads, and I need those suckers. I haven’t ever (since a child) been able to jump without peeing. I used to run long distance but always had this issue. Sneeze and it’s over, pad or not.
I live in a place with awful air quality and have a chronic cough due to it (ironically quit smoking 6 years ago). I cough- I pee.
Tonight I got a sneezing fit after brushing my old cat (I am allergic but have 4 cats and no the cats are not budging) and it is just awful😭 I was in bed watching TV and now it’s 1 am and I am changing sheets.
I am SO done with this. It is embarrassing and awful. The poise pads are not cutting it. I am not even 50 yet!
What do I do? Years ago I talked to a dr but he was not a fan of bladder sling type surgery and so I never pursued it. I have some friends who got mesh and had complications, and honestly I have been in denial it is to that level. But it is. I am so tired of dealing with this!
Help a peeing pea, please.

I'm sorry, I have slight incontinence as well and it's frustrating and embarrassing. I'd go back to a specialist, see what the best current procedure is. Also, my mom took a pill for a while that helped.

I have a temporary fix I got a dreadful cough some years ago - which came with temporary UI. Turned out the menstral cup I was using at the time (diva cup) prevented the UI when I coughed. So I used it even though I didn't have my period and it got me through the cough. I have used it a few times since when a similar cold/cough has happened and it saved the day. Might be worth trying as a non-surgical option.

I was young back then and just had my second kid, no kids after that. The dr was very discouraging it would stay, but it was like 15 years ago so technology has changed I’m sure. He really poo pooed the effects I had and said the surgery would be not permanent. I need to see a dr now though, and get answers. Im pretty miserable.

do you drink a lot of caffeine? I've had a hysterectomy, and ever since, I sometimes have issues where when I have to go, I reeeeaallly have to go. Like, right away. I saw my oncologist for a checkup, and she asked 'any questions?' and I actually brought it up (it is embarrassing, isn't it?) and she said that too much caffeine can irritate your bladder. I was drinking a LOT of iced tea at the time.
I hope you get some answers that can help you out- having to always worry about sneezing, coughing, or laughing certainly isn't a 'good' quality of life, if you're always on edge about what might happen.

Might be worth trying as a non-surgical option. I can vouch for that, if you happen to be the same shape inside. I have the opposite problem - the menstrual cup makes it difficult for me to wee, but I'm keeping that in mind for the future when and if the stress incontinence starts, as it probably will. My Mum is 83 and her SI started after her hip replacement surgery. I know, different circumstances all round, but she found pelvic floor exercises helped her. ETA: reading the post after mine reminded me that my cousin had to stop drinking tea because the caffeine irritated her bladder. She used to find that she would drink tea and then instantly have to wee, and again and again. My aunt (her mother) used to complain that she had 'a bladder the size of a tea cup' LOL. But once she gave up tea and coffee, she was 'normal' again. SaveSave

I have a similar problem. Even as a child I had issues. I’m not sure what the problem was exactly (and my mom Doesn’t remember, either) but I had two surgeries when I was a child that I think were supposed to do something to the urethra but I wonder if it made it worse. I always had issues with fully wetting my pants when I laughed really hard.
Now, I have urine leakage all the time. Even right after I go to the bathroom, some leaks out as I stand up. I wear the lightest poise pads as well and they are a lifesaver but not really solving the problem. I was referred to a urologist but wasn’t really told what the option would be and didn’t want to spend the money for something that wasn’t going to be helpful. But I’m thinking about looking into it now. I also have diastasis recti and think that is probably making things worse.
I also have a strong urge to go to the bathroom quite often. I do notice that can be triggered by more caffeine but I wonder if the other part would be better if I cut back. I usually have about 200 mg of caffeine a day

You need to see a urologist and discuss what your options might be.
If you don't like the first one, try another.
At least you will have information.

I had bladder surgery twice a couple of years ago, not for incontinence but for a fistula (opening) that was triggered by scar tissue from a hysterectomy years earlier. (The gift that keeps on giving.)
I did a lot of reading at that time, because at first my gynecologist thought I was experiencing incontinence and I was preparing myself for that. I recall there are several reasons for bladder leakage. You should have the tests done to find out the exact cause, first off. If you have an overactive bladder, surgery won't help, but if you have stress incontinence, it will. And the younger you do it, the easier it will be for you. There are sling procedures and there is also something where they reinforce the neck of the bladder and provide support for it. There was a problem at one time with the mesh from the slings, but that was then and this is now. Honestly, you should see a good urologist (preferable one who works out of a good hospital) and review your options.
My surgery had a long recovery (six weeks) and was almost certainly more involved than what would be needed in your case, but I would do it all again to have the problem resolved. Please let us know if you decide to go for a complete evaluation.

Find a urogynecologist. It makes such a difference to have a doctor that is skilled and knowledgable about female specific incontinence issues. There's not a once size fits all solution but you don't have to live like this. I had a sling type surgery several years ago and it was life changing. My quality of life improved exponentially.

one other reason for my 'issues' is that I'm eating a high-protein, low calorie diet right now, so I am sometimes constipated. It seems like when that happens, there's not enough room in there for my bladder to hold as much liquid- so for me, the increased 'urgency' in peeing goes along with having stuff moving slowly through my digestive system.
So there could be other things you might be able to do/change to improve it until you see a knowledgeable doctor... ??

I went to a urologist a few years ago after things got so bad that I had to leave work because I peed my pants while laughing. I take Vesicare and have limited my carbonation intake and there has been a world of difference. The urologist mentioned caffeine might be a culprit too, but I'd rather take the pill than give up coffee.

I also use Poise, the long overnight ones. But due to overflooding on occasion, I back them up with a Cuties, size 6 baby diaper. I order both from Amazon.
I fell on a piece of machinery as a child, although I am not sAying that's my cause. I only had 2 child. But I would prefer to be protected in any way over having an accident.

I had the sling surgery. Best thing I ever did. It's been 6 years and I wish I'd done it sooner. I first tried using a pessary (sp?) which is very similar to the poster who said to use a diva cup except it's designed for it and it doesn't block your cervix.
Go to someone who is extremely familiar with the procedure for best results.

((((Hugs)))) - such a common but embarrassing issue.
I mostly have issues when I cough or sneeze - I've had good results from my menstrual cup (Keeper) when I have a cold/bronchitis/pneumonia...not perfect but MUCH better than without. I think a pessary would probably help in my case if I ever get around to mentioning it to my PCP (seems like one issue/visit is the limit and other things always take priority)
limiting caffeine has helped. So has getting my blood sugar under control (probably because that improved all things pee-related, lol).

I had a bladder sling done when I had my hyst. some years ago. It helped for the first year but for the past 3 to 4 years, I've been diagnosed with OAB, overactive bladder syndrome. I've taken a variety of rxs, Vesicare, etc. Helps but not a whole lot. I honestly a bit irritated that after years of dealing with menstrual pads, I now have to deal with urinary pads. I see my urologist this summer for my annual visit so maybe there will be a new medicine I can take that might be covered by insurance. At least I have a super nice urologist.

Go see a gynecology urologist. After 3 kids I had trouble when I coughed or sneezed. I had the bladder sling 12 years ago and it worked great. I still catch myself crossing my legs when I sneeze, habit and extra protection I guess.

oh gosh, I feel your pain! Yours sounds far worse than I ever had.
While I am sure (as obvi by the posts on this thread)...there are many reasons for stress incontinence, but I can honestly say losing over 100 pounds cured mine, 100% completely.
I don't need a prescription or to line my undies with mini pads anymore. I can't tell you wonderful the change has made to my body. I work out at the gym and work on my core a lot, and its simply to make my body strong.
I just thought I'd share for anyone who is reading this thread and is having similar story...it's another reason to get on the ball and get that weight off and your body back in shape. It worked for me.
<hugs> it sucks, no matter what.

Mine didn’t start until about 5 or so years ago (when I put on a substantial amount of weight). I’ve been losing and it seems to be getting better. I was hoping that getting back to a healthy weight would resolve this! It would have to get pretty bad for me to go thru surgery with 6 weeks of recovery, I think. If I’m going to have that kind of recovery period, I’m going to want a child or a tummy tuck and breast augmentation out of it! 😀

BIG SMILE of happiness on that. Oh, oh oh you keep losing and it will right itself for you too, so happpy for you, and um, yeah about recovery time for a TT or new boobs! LOL That's worth it to me!

Ok I saw a urogynecologist and he did this in office testing to see how much urine I leaked out. It was reassembling because it was messy. He said everything is fine and to see a physio who handles this. I got a terrible UTI from the testing. Ok well it was in the name of science and diagnosing so what can I do?
I saw a physio for months who handles this. She was very nice and helped a lot. She did manipulations internally and I think it's better but I know peeing takes a long time. I want to be in and out of the bathroom and i am still going. There is also dripping. That hasn't gone away either. I got a UTI from seeing her because that is what happens to me. I can do the exercises she gave me and I think they help but if I have not peed in a while I will leak if I cough or sneeze or nothing. That is a new symptom. Just laying in bed and I felt a trickle. I wear the thinnest Poise pads and I peed just enough to wet the pad. I could go back to her but I have been UTI free for 2 months and i am enjoying it to be honest.
