You can't drive five miles in Iowa without seeing abortion/Jesus billboard signs. I was not surprised. My mom loves in Iowa and according to her, the current government is doing anything in their power to hurt democrats. Whether that means cutting funding to the universities that they see as being too liberal, to gun and abortion laws, to changes in education that hurt teachers and ultimately the population as a whole. They did seem to be more progressive in social policies for awhile. I’m not sure what changed the tide. But from what I see and hear from my family, trump has let many feel free to let out their inner deplorable. I have family there too and they have changed from conservative to ultra conservative, and from religious to in some cases almost cult members. These are all educated people. It’s actually kind of scary.

linkThe Guardian.... “Revealed: Trump team hired spy firm for ‘dirty ops’ on Iran arms deal”
“Israeli agency told to find incriminating material on Obama diplomats who negotiated deal with Tehran” From the article... “Aides to Donald Trump, the US president, hired an Israeli private intelligence agency to orchestrate a “dirty ops” campaign against key individuals from the Obama administration who helped negotiate the Iran nuclear deal, the Observer can reveal. H People in the Trump camp contacted private investigators in May last year to “get dirt” on Ben Rhodes, who had been one of Barack Obama’s top national security advisers, and Colin Kahl, deputy assistant to Obama, as part of an elaborate attempt to discredit the deal. In case you missed it, this was done AFTER trump took office. And it was done against American Citizens. The extraordinary revelations come days before Trump’s 12 May deadline to either scrap or continue to abide by the international deal limiting Iran’s nuclear programme. Jack Straw, who as foreign secretary was involved in earlier efforts to restrict Iranian weapons, said: “ These are extraordinary and appalling allegations but which also illustrate a high level of desperation by Trump and [the Israeli prime minister] Benjamin Netanyahu, not so much to discredit the deal but to undermine those around it.” One former high-ranking British diplomat with wide experience of negotiating international peace agreements, requesting anonymity, said: “It’s bloody outrageous to do this. The whole point of negotiations is to not play dirty tricks like this.” Sources said that officials linked to Trump’s team contacted investigators days after Trump visited Tel Aviv a year ago, his first foreign tour as US president. Trump promised Netanyahu that Iran would never have nuclear weapons and suggested that the Iranians thought they could “do what they want” since negotiating the nuclear deal in 2015. A source with details of the “dirty tricks campaign” said: “ The idea was that people acting for Trump would discredit those who were pivotal in selling the deal, making it easier to pull out of it.”According to incendiary documents seen by the Observer, investigators contracted by the private intelligence agency were told to dig into the personal lives and political careers of Rhodes, a former deputy national security adviser for strategic communications, and Kahl, a national security adviser to the former vice-president Joe Biden. Among other things they were looking at personal relationships, any involvement with Iran-friendly lobbyists, and if they had benefited personally or politically from the peace deal.Investigators were also apparently told to contact prominent Iranian Americans as well as pro-deal journalists – from the New York Times, MSNBC television, the Atlantic, Vox website and Haaretz, the Israeli newspaper among others – who had frequent contact with Rhodes and Kahl in an attempt to establish whether they had violated any protocols by sharing sensitive intelligence. They are believed to have looked at comments made by Rhodes in a 2016 New York Times profile in which he admitted relying on inexperienced reporters to create an “echo chamber” that helped sway public opinion to secure the deal. It is also understood that the smear campaign wanted to establish if Rhodes was among those who backed a request by Susan Rice, Obama’s final national security adviser, to unmask the identities of Trump transition officials caught up in the surveillance of foreign targets. Although sources have confirmed that contact and an initial plan of attack was provided to private investigators by representatives of Trump, it is not clear how much work was actually undertaken, for how long or what became of any material unearthed. Neither is it known if the black ops constituted only a strand of a wider Trump-Netanyahu collaboration to undermine the deal or if investigators targeted other individuals such as John Kerry, the lead American signatory to the deal. Both Rhodes and Kahl said they had no idea of the campaign against them. Rhodes said: “I was not aware, though sadly am not surprised. I would say that digging up dirt on someone for carrying out their professional responsibilities in their positions as White House officials is a chillingly authoritarian thing to do.” A spokesman for the White House’s national security council offered “no comment” when approached. However, the revelations are not the first time that claims of “dirty tricks” have been aimed at the Trump camp. Special counsel Robert Mueller is leading an investigation into apparent attempts by Trump’s inner-circle to dig up damaging information on Hillary Clinton during the 2016 presidential campaign.” trump is draining the swamp alright but he’s changing it into a cesspool and he’s the biggest piece of shit in it. There aren't party nominees in California anymore for state office. Unless they've changed the system again. There's one big primary and then the top two vote getters, regardless of party, move on to the November election. We had two Democrats running against each other for Senate on the 2016 ballot. That said, the California Republicans are holding their convention this weekend, and they've already thrown this douchebag out. Had him forcibly removed. They aren't going to let him run as a Republican. I was impressed. California Republicans are pretty darn conservative these days. But they aren't this far gone.

Stop. You're making my head explode. ("chain migration": an ugly and inaccurate name for the process by which his family got here, but now he doesn't like it anymore. Okay, except for his in-laws.)

From Newsweek...
TRUMP BOASTS HIS APPROVAL RATING IS ‘ABOVE OBAMA’ BASED ON POLL THAT CONSISTENTLY FAVORS HIM
From the article....
“President Donald Trump took the opportunity during a tax reform roundtable in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday to say he was “above Obama,” citing his approval rating from a conservative-leaning poll.
“We just had a poll, 51 or 52, which came out, you know, very nicely,” Trump said, referring to a Rasmussen Reports poll on Friday that showed 51 percent of likely U.S. voters approve of his job performance while 49 percent disapprove.”
Then I turn on like, you know, one of the networks and I see, ‘Donald Trump, who’s not very popular…’ I’m saying, ‘What are you talking about?’” Trump continued. “In fact, you saw the poll came out that I’m above Obama.”
“I’m above Obama,” Trump reiterated, drawing claps from the audience.“
He is so damn needy.

Money Laundering? From David Fahrenthold of The Washington Post... “ As the ‘King of Debt,’ Trump borrowed to build his empire. Then he began spending hundreds of millions in cash”
From the article... In the nine years before he ran for president, Donald Trump’s company spent more than $400 million in cash on new properties — including 14 transactions paid for in full, without borrowing from banks — during a buying binge that defied real estate industry practices and Trump’s own history as the self-described “King of Debt.” Trump’s vast outlay of cash, tracked through public records and totaled publicly here for the first time, provides a new window into the president’s private company, which discloses few details about its finances. It shows that Trump had access to far more cash than previously known, despite his string of commercial bankruptcies and the Great Recession’s hammering of the real estate industry. Why did the “King of Debt,” as he has called himself in interviews, turn away from that strategy, defying the real estate wisdom that it’s unwise to risk so much of one’s own money in a few projects? And how did Trump — who had money tied up in golf courses and buildings — raise enough liquid assets to go on this cash buying spree? From the outside, it is difficult to assess how much cash the Trump Organization has on hand. Eric Trump, a son of the president who helps manage the company, told The Washington Post that none of the cash used to purchase the 14 properties came from outside investors or from selling off major Trump Organization assets. Instead, Eric Trump said, the firm’s existing businesses — commercial buildings in New York, licensing deals for Trump-branded hotels and clothes — produced so much cash that the Trumps could tap that flow for spending money. “He had incredible cash flow and built incredible wealth,” Eric Trump said. “He didn’t need to think about borrowing for every transaction. We invested in ourselves.” He added: “It’s a very nice luxury to have.” The cash purchases began with a $12.6 million estate in Scotland in 2006. In the next two years, he snapped up two homes in Beverly Hills. Then five golf clubs along the East Coast. And a winery in Virginia. The biggest cash binge came last, in the year before Trump announced his run for president. In 2014, he paid a combined $79.7 million for large golf courses in Scotland and Ireland. Since then, those clubs have lost money while Trump renovated them, requiring him to pump in $164 million in cash to keep them running. Trump’s lavish spending came at a time when his business was leaning largely on one major financial institution for its new loans — Deutsche Bank, which provided $295 million in financing for big projects in Miami and Washington.

If I borrow $100 from my sister and go buy groceries I pay cash for my groceries but that doesn’t mean I don’t owe her $100 back. Trump spent investors ‘cash’ ask Trump junior who those investors were? In the past he has publicly stated it was Russian business men. Follow the money all the way back to where it came from. Follow the money.

“GOP Sen. Roy Blunt on President Trump's false statements: "The more important thing, I would suggest, is doing what you say you're going to do when you're elected President" #CNNSOTU”
Today’s GOP.
1. It’s ok for the President of the United States to lie to the American People.
2. We HAVE to vote for a bill we ran on even if it’s a piece of shit(Grassley on the ACA repeal bill).
3. Members of Congress are running against Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi in the mid-term elections. I wasn’t aware Hillary was running for public office and I’m pretty sure Nancy won’t have a GOP challenge in her district.

lThe AtlanticThe Atlantic... “Trump Is About to Provoke an Unnecessary Crisis With Iran”Withdrawing from the nuclear deal, as he seems to prefer, would destroy America’s ability to monitor the Islamic Republic’s nuclear activities. From the article... “There’s a decent chance that tearing up the Iran deal, as Trump seems likely to do next week, will lead to escalating confrontation with Iran throughout the Middle East, diplomatic isolation of the United States, and military strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities that would likely have to be repeated periodically in the absence of any nuclear agreement or verification regime. I respect Reuel Marc Gerecht’s honesty in his recent Atlantic pieces advocating withdrawal from the Iran deal, and his willingness to accept the logical consequences of his approach, or at least the serious risk that these could be the consequences.” Gerecht says one reason America must insist on additional demands of Iran is because otherwise we will never know “whether the clerical regime is cheating outside the surveilled sites.” I’ll admit that no inspection regime could ever be perfect. But the current one that provides for 24/7 surveillance cameras at declared sites and gives the International Atomic Energy Agency the right to go wherever else it needs to go—including to military bases, by the way—is not just good but a whole lot better than no inspection regime at all, which is where I fear Gerecht’s policy prescriptions would lead. Once America bombs Iranian facilities, and they kick all the inspectors out, how are we going to be sure they’re not cheating then? Iran is a big country with lots of scientists, engineers, labs, mountains, cities, and military bases. How will we know what they’re up to? Will we send in inspectors like the United Nations Special Commission (UNSCOM) in Iraq, and then, if they refuse, invade to change the regime? It’s not as if we haven’t been in a similar situation before.“ And this is exactly why trump should not be considered for a Nobel Peace prize for his “work” with a North Korea.

This is what happens when you have a 24/7 propaganda machine (FOX) churning out bullshit. I'd be willing to bet that that is their single source for information. And the strange part of this is that those same people are the ones who railed against the communist propaganda machine of years past. They just can't see it when it is themselves being sold a spacific agenda.

SNL’s open last night was hilarious last night. I am at the point where if I don’t laugh I am going to cry, and the opening was just the ticket.
Good lord, the Republicans might want to look into some sort of trademarking or protection of their party label so assholes like the guy linked above can’t use it to run, I am glad they threw that guy out, but people like that sure aren’t helping their huge credibility problem.

NBC News....
“Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush plan to be eulogists at Sen. McCain's funeral, according to a source close to McCain.”
If it’s true McCain doesn’t want trump at his funeral then it’s a good thing because if we had to listen to him eulogized McCain we all know instead of talking about McCain’s accomplishments he would end up talk about himself and how he is a much better president then President Obama.

Ben Rhodes...
“Why would someone feel the need to do this to win a debate about the merits of the Iran Deal? What message does this send to people entering into public service?”
Ben Rhodes was one of the targets in the attempt to find “dirt” on Obama advisers that worked on and supported the Iran Deal.
If the deal was a bad deal, it seems to me it would be easy peasy for trump and company to make the case instead doing crap like this.

From Newsweek... TRUMP BOASTS HIS APPROVAL RATING IS ‘ABOVE OBAMA’ BASED ON POLL THAT CONSISTENTLY FAVORS HIM From the article.... “President Donald Trump took the opportunity during a tax reform roundtable in Cleveland, Ohio, on Saturday to say he was “above Obama,” citing his approval rating from a conservative-leaning poll. “We just had a poll, 51 or 52, which came out, you know, very nicely,” Trump said, referring to a Rasmussen Reports poll on Friday that showed 51 percent of likely U.S. voters approve of his job performance while 49 percent disapprove.” Then I turn on like, you know, one of the networks and I see, ‘Donald Trump, who’s not very popular…’ I’m saying, ‘What are you talking about?’” Trump continued. “In fact, you saw the poll came out that I’m above Obama.” “I’m above Obama,” Trump reiterated, drawing claps from the audience.“ He is so damn needy. I bet Seth Myers regrets ever mentioning Trump's name in 2011. However, if Trump wasn't such a sociopath and narcissistic ass, he could have taken the jokes with a grain of salt. Everything he does to be better than Obama stems from that WHC dinner. Trump was SEETHING on the videos.

Conservatives are fuming that Rosie O’Donnell’s illegally large campaign donations would have landed a Republican with a similar problem in hot water. Of course, that’s not true. Here’s a long list of Republican donors who contributed too much and got nothing more than a refund, just as O’Donnell is likely to receive. m.huffpost.com/us/entry/3607672But of course, it’s always easier to whine about how persecuted you are than to undertake a 30 second Google search.

I saw that on the Conservative thread. I honestly cannot believe they are worked up about that. She is a has been celebrity who is writing checks that, as you said, will likely be partially refunded. They are actually already upset because she won’t likely be charged with anything. The freaking president of the US paid off a porn star during his run for President and that is ok? FFS this is something Cohen apparently did all the time, but all they are concerned about is the liberal witch hunt and the fact that someone over wrote checks to Democratic candidates. It isn’t like Rosie O created a bunch of shell companies to get around the donation limits or had her lawyer send checks with money she funneled him. SMH. When I was little my mom hated Montgomery Wards store and always told us if she mentioned she was going to go there for any reason we were to “hit her over the head with a broom.” I think I am going to keep a broom handy for when I feel the need to read the Conservative thread. I love a good discussion, I love all the things I have learned from peas over the years, but that thread has devolved in such a way it just makes me stabby.

How are the remaining honest Republicans defending this? How are the remaining honest Republicans defending this? It would take a lot of digging to find one to ask.
