My sister and her husband are looking at possible places to retire in Tennessee. He needs good access to medical care, as he already survived a widow maker heart attack and lived past the age of his dad. He likes fishing and hunting.
She will need to work for a few years after the move, so she wants to be near universities/colleges where she can teach. They are already priced out of Nashville, so are looking at Knoxville area. They are in the 350k range, as they are keeping the house near Chicago until actual retirement. So, this would be a vacation home then retirement.
Anyone know anything about this area?

Maryville is at foothills of Smoky Mountains and has more affordable housing than Knoxville but has lakes, good medical facilities, shopping, etc, but is close to Knoxville for even more. Maryville was noted as the best place to retire a few years ago and a lot of retirees agreed and moved here.

Our former neighbors moved to Knoxville and love it there. They were both already retired although he worked part-time doing a couple different things. But they wanted a milder climate. They also have a daughter and grandchildren living there.

DH and I retired to Knoxville 20 years ago and ❤️ love it here. Medical facilities are top rate. Housing is plentiful and affordable. Lots of choices for grocery stores. An abundance of Churches. We found it to be friendly, and making friends was easy. And it’s beautiful here.
Maryville is also nice—a small town feel. And has a very good private school: Maryville College, so that might be an option for teaching. Of course, UT in Knoxville has a very large facility.
If you have other questions, I’ll try to answer them.
