Powerful statement. And separately, the music and dancing is incredible.

The choir being shot with an AR-15 was especially powerful.

I've watched this video so many times since it came out on Saturday. Its a song that finally (I think) speaks to what is really going on in the black community on a lot of different levels (you have to watch the video more than once and watch the background to get what I'm saying). Between the video and Meek Mill's interview on Dateline last night I'm a lot more optimistic that activism is starting with both an awareness of what is going on racially and a sense that things have got to change within the black community as well.

I watched it a few times just now and though I'm sure this white woman missed a lot, I saw more each time. I will look for Meek Mill's interview. I agree about the choir being shot, Olan . It was shocking and impactful. Just read this. Forbes

Nobody else has summed up the current state of the USA better than Childish Gambino in four minutes: everything is there and done beautifully. Art for society's sake.
The symbols are clear as water, the little ticks and facial/body affections underline the absurdity and mental gymnastics to go through to justify the current state (and the long history it's the product of). Every time I hit the play button, I notice something new!

Dropping back in to say this video is the hot topic of the start of the week over here (Europe). Group chat has been going on about it all day. The cotton field colour scheme and colour correction, the gold chains around CG's neck, etc. This is how you make people talk and think about important topics!

Powerful video and song. And he is mesmerizing. I've had to watch multiple times to see everything going on (it's hard to not watch him).

I didn't realize he was playing Jim Crow until I read more about it. Can't stop thinking about this video.
Fun note: I went to college with someone who is a very successful Hollywood screen writer and he shared this morning that he critiqued all of Donald Glover's scripts when they were in a script writing class together at NYU. It's crazy to think about that much talent in one small class.

Copy and Paste from random Facebook status:
I felt the video was tacky. It was more death porn using black bodies under the guise of art. I do not believe it will make a single #fffff change their view on the black deaths he caricaturized. If the actual deaths did not shock these 'people' into having a sense of humanity, why would a performance of the deaths do the same? I like the song, and I can understand the intention of the video, but I felt the execution just ended up tacky. We have to see black deaths in every single form of media there is, as well as in real life. Black death is always interpreted as art. Even when you play around with the deaths of real people and perform their executions for your music video, it's supposed to be art. And you imply that Dylan Roof was an artist. You imply that Zimmerman was a muse. And the black lives lost at their hands were just paintbrushes to their masterpiece. I just can't bring myself to celebrate black death with y'all.
I'm glad a lot of y'all did like it, but it honestly fell flat for me.

I never want to see “This is America” again. Recreating scenes of black pain and death for your mostly wt audience is not progressive, it’s triggering. I got no strength or inspiration from the video. It angered me that the violence enacted on black people could be shown so casually, so comically. Are we that desensitised? Have we become so used to the endless grainy iPhone videos on our timelines of black folk being killed by police, that depicting the Charleston church shooting in a music video like it was an interlude in a Musical is called “art?” Who was this video for? And what will you do now? (this is for the wt ppl sharing it)What is your next step? Or is sharing the video the summation of your “anti-racist” activism?
I’m currently playing Solange’s “A Seat At The Table”, because that album will always be the salve to tend the open wound of anti-blackness and violence inflicted on us so easily, so consistently, and so visually.
_____
This a.m. I obviously thought Danny Glover deserved some accolades. I guess that's why it's important to expose yourself to people who see things differently than you do. I don't feel as strongly as the C&P authors but I do regret my initial reaction about This Is America.

Thoughts from a 47 yr old white chick from suburban Denver... I watched the video this morning, twice. I wasn't sure what to think. I Googled the lyrics, and did some reading online... thought about it some more.
The main thing I'm pulling from it is that there are so many attention grabbing things going on in our society dealing with the black community that the true issues (deep down issues), what's really happening, is getting lost. Not that the "attention grabbing things" (the symptoms) aren't important, they just take up so much space in our minds that they issues aren't being dealt with.
Like several have mentioned... the first time I watched the video I barely noticed what was going on in the background because Glover was so mesmerizing. The second time I watched it, I purposely watched what was going on in the background (and still probably missed so many things).
I didn't see the violence and chaos as comical or casual... I saw it as a juxtaposition to Glover and his words and movements; I saw the two things together saying something's wrong and we need to get to the root of it.
I am also coming from a completely different place than the particular C&P poster who described the violence as comical. I don't know, I may be missing some even deeper meaning. OR, I may be totally off the mark. I should probably watch and read more.

The first time I ever heard his music, I literally stopped in my tracks. Him and Maggie Rogers are are a breath of fresh air.
The video is incredible. Sadly, I think the people that need to see it the most will be “offended” rather than see the true meaning of it.

Most are too dumb to really get it let alone be offended. Possibly programmed in place of dumb if you need your social justice served palatable. I include myself in those ranks because another interpretation article has further blown my mind. Art will always be art but there will always be people too x to really absorb the message. Then when you account for the folks that almost instantly got all the references and still won't use the information to spark change you can see how truly fucked we all are *shrugs*.

Art is meant to provoke gut feelings, conversation and controversy. This piece is doing all of that, and I think it’s good there are various interpretations and feelings about it. All communities should feel the turmoil; it’s not an easy subject.

There's so much to unpack in this video. I feel like I need to watch it many more times before I can even begin to parse out everything that's going on. It's very powerful. I really like the song.

I watched the video once and I adore Danny Glover. It is quite difficult to take your eyes off him. He is captivating. I need to watch this several more times to absorb all of the symbolism and hidden meanings. I was in the car today with my son and he played his music from his phone. It was a different Childish Gambino song. I like the music and might have to check it out some more.
