If it is free to return it and I don't want it, then I return it. Otherwise, probably under $10, or less than what the postage will cost me to return it.

I would return it for sure as it is defective. I'm surprised though they don't just tell you they are mailing you out a new one without having to return the defective one.

With free return shipping I would do it in a heartbeat especially since you said it wasn't that far from you.

I would probably email Amazon and I’m pretty sure they’re going to tell you to keep it and send you another one That's happened to me a couple of times for less expensive items. Would cost them more to take it back than what the item is worth.

I would return a $14 item. I haven’t thought about it before, but my threshold would depend on whether there was a restocking fee and if I had to pay shipping. I have written sellers on eBay when they shorted me on an order or if there was a problem with it, even if the item was only $1, and they all just send the missing pieces or totally replaced the item without asking for the original returned.
I had one purchase of a $10 mold that wasn’t right and when I emailed the seller, she apologized and sent me a replacement without asking for the damaged one to be sent back to her. (I had sent a close up photo of the problem so she could see I wasn’t making it up) Oddly, the replacement was also damaged in the exact same way. When I wrote to her again, she took a good look at her stock and told me they were all the same due to a problem with the master that she didn’t notice. She went ahead and sent me a 3rd one after she made another master. Instead of being irritated about it, she thanked me for noticing the problem and sent me another little mold free of charge for alerting her to the issue instead of leaving negative feedback. Sellers like that always get my repeat business.
I wouldn’t hesitate to return the damaged hook, unless a little sandpaper would fix the issue (or Dremel buffer if it is metal)

I think $10 is my threshold. I would return that item. I've never really thought about it before, but I think that $10 would be my cut off too. And it depends on how much effort it involved in returning the item. I bought 2 tubs of yogurt (Chobani Flip) last week. They were well within the use by date range but mustn't have been stored correctly somewhere along the line, because the lid puffed up and when I opened one it exploded and tasted off. I planned to take them back and exchange them or get a refund but in the end I couldn't be bothered for the sake of $6.

Well I decided that I would return the hook. The shipping was free but the envelope to ship it back was $3.00 which was a bummer.

For $14 I would absolutely return something that didn't work. I usually don't bother with anything under $5.

Because it's defective, they'll pay the shipping so yes i'd return it. I sometimes order things and they aren't what I expect. If that was the case at this price point, i'd throw it in my donation pile.

I usually keep original packaging (even if it was shipped in a plastic bag) until I'm sure I'll keep it. I return things online all the time. There are a post office, UPS store, and FedEx store very close to me. Right now my dining room table is holding 3 returns for the next time I go out that way. I find Amazon and Zappos to be the easiest for returns. As far as a limit, if the return minus shipping and restocking fee is more than $5-6 I'll send it back. Less than that, and I don't think it's worth spending my time or gas on it.
