I ordered a crochet hook from Amazon. I have probably about ten different Addi hooks and they were all ordered on Amazon and have been great. I just ordered another and it has a rough edge that keeps snagging my yarn. I am certain this is just a manufacturer's defect. It cost me $14.24. I am debating if I want to go to all the trouble of returning it or if I should just throw the thing away. $14 seems like such small potatoes. How cheap would something have to be for you to decide it's not worth the trouble of returning it?

Oh gosh, I would definitely return it if it's defective. $14 is not small change to me and it's free return shipping being that it's defective.

If something doesn't work it goes back. It doesn't matter what it is.

I can stop by the UPS store tonight and drop it off. It's not too far from my house. I just wondered if others would bother returning for $14.

As long as I get more money back then shipping and reasonable time/effort, I’ll send it back.

(Or a couple at Aldi’s).

I think $10 is my threshold. I would return that item.

I would return it only if there were free returns, I wouldn’t pay to ship it back.

Did you contact the seller? Ofttimes they will gladly replace the item if you give them the chance.
If shippings covered, I return anything that's defective. I don't want to pay for something that came broken or broke within the first few days. Being able to do this without having to pay for shipping makes me MUCh more likely to order more items and more frequently. If the seller makes it good with very little effort on my part, I make sure to post a review.

If it's defective, I'd return it based on principle. If it's not defective, free return and if it's not an inconvenience to drop off/mail, then I'd ship it back as well. I think the only time I wouldn't bother is if it's inconvenient, I have to pay for return shipping that's $1 or so more than the value of the refund.

It depends on how much the shipping costs are to return the item. Jen

I ordered three paintbrushes by mistake - I needed brights and these are flats - I've used one but the other two I haven't touched. Total cost is around $15 for both but I'm sure it'll cost $6ish to send back? I figure I might as well keep them at this point, the shipping is would be almost half. If the return shipping was free I would return them and put the refund toward the correct brushes.

If you have $14 in cash would you throw it away? Of course, the UPS/USPS store is about 1 mile from my house and I pass them on the way to the grocery store, so returning things is easy.

I'd contact the seller and ask for a replacement. They should pay the shipping if it's defective.
I would absolutely return for $14. My threshold is if I get anything back, I'll do it.

I would return it since it's defective. If there was another reason I was dissatisfied with it, I wouldn't.

I think $5 or less would be my threshold. I ship things for free anyway through my DHs business so that's never a consideration. If not, then I'd have to factor in the expense of shipping and subtract it from the return (if not free shipping).

I would probably email Amazon and I’m pretty sure they’re going to tell you to keep it and send you another one

I’d return it. Would you return it if you had to drive to the store? So what’s the difference in dropping it off if you have the label already? Or will it cost more to return than it cost originally...then I wouldn’t return it

If there is no shipping in returning, I would return it. If there was a cost to returning, nope, not worth it.

If it was something I just didn't like and/or knew I wouldn't ever use, I'd chalk it up to experience, keep it, and be out $14. But since it's defective, hopefully even if Amazon didn't offer free return shipping, the manufacturer would handle it for you and send you a replacement, if you contacted them directly. I'd never just figure 'oh, well, I guess I'm out $14." I might if it was only a buck or two, but not $14. the mfr might even replace it for you without having to return the defective one, if you can provide photos of it.

I’d return it if it’s free shipping or a very small shipping cost and I’d still be ahead with a refund.

Probably depends on my mood, but yeah probably for $14 I would. I have a $10 watch I bought at Walmart and totally forgot to return it. I just came across it. I'm not even going to bother.. I threw it in the garage sale pile. But I just don't want to deal with Walmart.

Meh. I totally wouldn't if it was less than $50. I can't get deliveries (or have something picked up) from my house, so I would need to take it somewhere, and the closest locations are at least 35 miles away. If I'm going that way, sure. But chances of that are slim. And by the time I figure my gas, plus over an hour of my time, well, it's just not worth it to me.

If there's no postage involved I would send it back. I would not be giving away money if the item was faulty.

Free shipping goes back no matter what. Etsy seller will just refund me instead of me mailing it back. Earrings I will return to the store when I'm in the neighborhood.

I'm surprised they want you to return it and aren't just shipping you a new one. I've had a few defective things under $20 and that's the usual procedure, although I just sent a defective thermos back and it was about $17.
But as for your question, usually it's if I have to throw away what I got (versus some minimal use) and the cost of sending it back is less than what it cost (i.e., I'll get some money back for it).
ETA: But I am cleaning out my closet and am humiliated by how many clothes I have with tags still on them. Horrified, in effect.

I’ve never returned anything I bought online (well, I’ve returned it when I’ve ordered from the website and could return in a physical store).
It just seems like too much trouble.
I don’t order anything online that I might have to return.
In this situation I would tell the seller about the defect and expect a replacement or refund without bothering to ship it back (I have had that experience many times).

I recently ordered a knife on Amazon. It was about 11 dollars. I ordered gold and they sent me red. I notified them and they emailed me back to keep the incorrect one and the correct one was on the way. I would start by notifying Amazon.
