It's official. We sold our Michigan house (in about a day) and flew to Austin to buy one (fingers crossed that they accept our offer tomorrow - Liberty Hill area).
We had dinner with a high school friend of dh who kept talking about taratulas and scorpions and basically freaking me out. Others (realtor/builder realtor) downplayed that but it's still stuck in my head. Any calming words you can share with me? Anyone want to be my new best friend since I won't really know anyone?! 😀

I'm in the Houston area and have never run into one of those! I'll be interested to see if the Austin Peas have that problem. Congrats on the quick sell of your home.

Check your shoes before you put them on. Seriously...I have lived in Texas for over 30 years and have never seen a scorpion out and about much less in the house. I have seen a tarantula when I was in Big Bend in the desert.

We go to Texas for the winter every year. I've never seen either. Some little lizards climbing my trees, yes, but no really creepy crawlies. When we built our house, I asked the builder to build it up so that if there was a snake, it would have to climb steps to get in. He just laughed and said they don't mind steps. ![???](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/huh.png) I luckily haven't seen a snake yet, either, but I know they're around. Welcome to Texas. I hope you love it! Good luck with your house offer, too!

Austin is a great area--but the traffic is just awful. I have lived in Texas for all my life. I hate to say it, but the only time I encountered a scorpion was in Austin--over at Lake Travis. It was on my cousin's lawn chair, when we got it out to sit by the lake. If you have things in the garage that are seldom used, check for critters....But, I'd do that no matter where I lived. I'll be honest with you--when you face the heat this summer, you will forget about critters and just wonder how YOU are going to live through it. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) Think of it like a Michigan winter. You stay inside and dart from heated space to heated space. Here, in the summer, you stay under the air conditioner and when you have to go out, dart from AC place to AC place. Welcome to Texas!!

I live in Austin, in the Cedar Park area. I’ve been here for 14 years. I have been stung by scorpions twice. One crawled up my pant leg and stung me in the thigh. The other stung me in the armpit in bed in the middle of the night. I see or kill them at least once a year. They like to get in my light fixtures. I just killed one on my sidewalk last night. The good news is they are not deadly. They hurt like hell for a bit, but no lasting effects. And they’re little....like an inch long,
I have seen tarantulas twice...both times on the back of my house. They just stood there. They were actually cool. We just let them be and the next day they were gone. I’ve never seen one inside, ever.
Fire ants are a big problem for me, especially since I am allergic. They are a nuisance you will absolutely have to deal with.
Rattlesnakes have been a big problem this year. Lots of friends on Facebook posting pics of ones they’ve caught/ killed. They killed a big one in the drive of my school a few weeks ago (on a Sunday morning, so no kids were around, thankfully). I’ve never seen one personally.
There are definitely more critters that I’ve had to deal with anywhere else I’ve lived. But you get used to it!
There are so many Peas in the Austin area... we should definitely do a meetup!

My DS lives in Pflugerville, outside the city limits. His neighborhood has had a rattlesnake problem this year. Watch out for snakes....always, year round even.
Learn to know snakes and which are good ones (killing rats/mice) and which are poisonous. Fast lesson: Poisonous snakes have triangle shaped head and the tail ends abruptly. Safe snakes: Head gradually becomes body of snake and tail is nice an long (compared to poisonous snake).

I lived there for 14 years (Round Rock) and saw several scorpions but as said, they are small. Never saw a tarantula. But we also had a rattlesnake problem in our neighborhood. People were finding them in their garages. We never had one but I have had a terrible time with Copperheads here in NC. Had to kill one last summer. I have never had such adrenaline! To me the snakes would be more of a concern than anything else (besides the horrific heat). We also had a pack of coyotes in our neighborhood in Round Rock.

Lived in Oklahoma in the 70s and saw tarantula all the time. Never saw scorpions. In the school, at the park, in the backyard.
Not Texas, I know, but close enough.

My son lives in Cedar Park now but lived in Leander - out in the country- near Liberty Hill for 15 years or so and had a scorpion in the house once. No tarantulas. You’re good. If you leave shoes out on the deck or porch or in the garage it wouldn’t hurt to check them before wearing....

I've lived here for my whole life... 50 years. I have only seen a scorpion twice. Once at Girl Scout camp in Conroe and another (teeny, tiny one) at DH's aunt's house on the river in Wimberely.

I've lived in Austin 25+ years. Some years are worse than others. We've had a few scorpions and several tarantulas ( they're cute and won't bother you ). They're both less annoying than the fire ants. I'd be more concerned with snakes, you really do need to watch for them, mostly because they're easy to stumble upon. Location matters too, I live along a greenbelt so there are more of all kinds of critters. All in all, I don't think it's really worse here than other places.

Let me add, of all of the critters I have seen in Texas, the worst, HANDS DOWN, are the giant centipedes. I’ve seen a few in my yard over the years. They are huge and they are gross. I refuse to walk in my yard for days after I’ve seen one…

Yay a new Texas pea! I've lived in Texas for 35 years and I don't think I've ever seen a tarantula in the wild, or a rattlesnake. A couple of scorpions, but not in the house.
Heat. Heat and humidity will be your issue. Just got back from Houston though, and appreciating the relative lack of humidity in San Antonio a bit more this evening.

It’s disgusting here in Houston right now. A little too soon for the dew points to be so high! OP, yes there are critters here but it’s not a big deal. Once you’ve gotten your fill of our Mexican food and barbecue, you’ll forget all about the possibility of a tarantula. 😂

It really is Merge. I didn't notice it too much before our show but it felt like we walked into a thick wall of blegh when we came out of it. It was hot and hard to breathe and it's only mid-May. Y'all have some serious fortitude to be able to function during the summer months!

Thanks, everyone. It's the spiders that will make me want to flame throw my house.
Looks like the move will be July probably late. We have a cruise that we planned before we knew about this move so we'll be gone nearly all of September. I'd love a RefuPea meet and greet! I'm retiring from my job in June here so I'd love to meet people and be social!

The only place I have seen tarantulas was in Taylor when I lived there for a year in 5 th grade. (military brat, dad was overseas). We would catch them in jars and relocate them away from our house. I have seen one scorpion. Ever. It was in my kitchen, I was pregnant, I vacuumed it up and threw the vacuum out in the front yard. Didn’t want to chance getting stung! BUT I must say, you will be in near Dahlia Cafe! Be sure to check it out! Sharon in TX

I live in Cedar Park, backing up to a green belt. We find a handful of scorpions in the house every year, and I've only seen a couple tarantulas. The snakes are scary.

I have lived in Texas since I was 3 years old and I’m 56 now. I live about 60 miles north of Austin. I see plenty of scorpions but I live in the woods near a lake. I have been stung 10 times. It hurts but it doesn’t last long. We usually see a couple of tarantulas in the summer. We have regular pest control service so we never see anything in the house anymore. Welcome to Texas! Don’t let the critters worry you!

Get a cat and they will let you know whne there is a scorpion in the house. Mine would not attack them, but would just sit and watch them.
That being said, we live north of Austin and only had scorpions when we lived out in the country. Had snakes and other wildlife as well. The big shocker was the skunk family that walked through the yard one evening. LOL
But, now we live in the thriving metropolis of Temple and had only had a rat snake or two.
Welcome to Texas! I second the idea of a meet up of Central Texas peas

Welcome to Texas! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) I live in Dripping Springs and scorpions are a regular occurrence around here - especially just after the lawn gets mowed then tend to try to get into the house. We spray for them to try to keep them at bay. Watch your shoes and anything you keep on the floor (clothes, socks, etc). I haven't seen a tarantula myself but they aren't poisonous anyway. Its the snakes that will scare the bejeesus out of you and they are plentiful! Kill first, research later. Sorry, that methodology has protected me a few times! I hope you love it here!

I had one experience with a teeny scorpion, but it was hiding in a box that had been in storage in Dallas in months. I saw it crawling around before I stuck my hand in, thankfully.
I've never seen a tarantula, but I would think it was cool if I had. They are harmless to humans, but I understand they are scary to some.
Neighborhoods with new construction are going to be most affected by scorpions. All of that digging and disruption of their habitat makes them come out and they can become an issue, but exterminators will quickly take care of any problems you may have.
Welcome to Austin! I've been here 20 years and love it. The only thing I hate is the heat. The awful, stifling, oppressive heat. But I am more sensitive than most because I sweat like a maniac.
