I don’t go to malls often, but I don’t worry about this when I do. I mean, if anyone asked you’d just produce your receipt and move on. And how many people said on another thread that they don't take receipts? Stores in the mall aren’t the places that give you a choice.

I get the option mostly at non-food stores. Even Best Buy gives you the option and they check receipts at the door. One time I couldn’t bring up my receipt fast enough on my phone and he just waved me on. Lol!

It's very uncommon around here.
My store sells reusable bags in tremendous quantities and the people who buy them are emphatic that they don't want their purchases put into them. I am not sure what they are using them for if they refuse to put their purchases in them.

Interesting that what motivates most people to use their own re-usable bags is being charged for the others. 10 cents can be a motivator. Similar to the returning a grocery cart for 25 cents situation at Aldi or Lidl. It takes just pocket change to motivate people. Myself, I like to use the empty cartons available at Aldi whenever I can. It just keeps things more organized in my car. I'll have them load everything into my cart and then I'll take a few empty cartons to the car with me, set them inside and load into them. yes, I use reusable bags because I get charged otherwise. I admit it. I have a dog so I like to use the plastic bags for poop or for trash can liners. Some stores still give out bags (mostly ones that are not in coastal cities) and I take one if they ask.

I’m in MI. I think it’s still a majority of no. Although you do see a few. It also depends on the store, there are a few where you see it more often: my coop, the local health store, aldis, and a newer grocery that’s was trying to mimic a whole foods (they’ve already stopped carrying some things and switched to a cheaper conventional type due to lack of acceptance).
I do, unless I happen to be in dh’s truck. I keep all the bags in my van.

I get so many compliments on my bags. They're from Baggu and they are machine washable.

Southern California banned “single use” bags a couple years ago so now I’m forced to bring my own bags. Honestly, it pisses me off because they were not “single use”. I reused EVERY SINGLE bag mainly for dog poop. The kicker is that I’m still using the same amount of plastic because now I buy small trash bags to use for dog poop. Home Depot & Michaels still give out the “single use” bags. I usually double bag or ask for a bag for even the tiniest purchase. Agreed. I used those single use bags all the stores gave out for my garbage bags and bags I used to clean my cat box. I would use them to take items with me to work or when I gave things away to other people. So now, I buy trash bags and small cat box cleaning bags. So my bag consumption hasn't change I just have to purchase them all now.
Why Home Depot, Michaels, and basically any store that isn't a grocery store can still give out a single use plastic bag is something that seems counter-intuitive to me. If the bags are evil, shouldn't they be banned entirely, not just from certain stores? My gut has always said this law was just a money grab and I still think it is.

Here is what makes it crazy in my area. If it is a coastal city, Michaels, Barnes & Noble, Apple, and most other stores (except Home Depot) will charge you for a bag. But if you go inland about 10-15 miles to another city, those same stores will still put your stuff in the bags for free. Some cities have their own stricter rules about bags than what the basic California law says.

Not common at all for people to use reusable bags.

In VA, it was my grocery store as well and I miss it! We don’t have any super Targets near me now. I was told it was because of Kroger but I really don’t know for sure. When I go back home, I always stop in the Target because they carry more items than what I have here. Interesting about the “because of Kroger” thing. We have Kroger here and also SuperTarget. In our town, the local grocery store had a monopoly on the grocery market. Something about no new stores being able to be opened unless it was in an existing space or something like that. Not sure if maybe that kind of deal is what kept super target from coming to your town?

I live in Colorado Springs and I don't see anyone bringing reusable bags. We don't have recycle bins throughout our city either for people to put their recycles in when out and about as I have seen in many larger cities. There has been talk about banning and charging, but has not gone forward. Today we picked up sandwiches at Subway and they put our food in a paper bag instead of the normal plastic they have always used. Many of the fast food places are doing more paper type containers rather than foil or plastic. Little steps lead to bigger ones, so maybe we will get there some time. My Subway uses those paper bags—well, they HAVE to, since the plastic ones are banned.

I have about 5-6 Trader Joe's bags, which are my absolute favorite reusable bags. I keep them in my car so they are handy. Usage around here depends on the store. At Walmart you don't see much reusable usage; at Whole Foods you see a lot. At Publix it's maybe 25-30%. At Aldi it depends on whether the shopper is a seasoned Aldi shopper or a first-timer. First-timers don't know you have to pay for bags; those of us who've been in the Aldi rodeo for a while do and bring our own bags.

Yes. I can't remember the last time I used a plastic bag, I have this in my handbag all the time and cotton ones I take for clothes shopping.
That’s so cute! My DD would LOVE that print!

Can I ask a question? I don't mean to derail the thread but I would be hesitant to use a reusable shopping bag when mall shopping. I just feel like in my area where reusable bags are uncommon I would be suspected of theft in department stores. Anyone want to weigh in on this? I’ve thought about this as well.

I’ve noticed that sometimes security will check you, but people are more trusting these days. I live in Chicago where they charge you $0.07 per bag. I often forget my bags and will walk out of a store with items in my hands and security doesn’t make a peep. There was a weird portion of time when they mandated that stores only offer reusable bags for the $0.07 and so they were giving us these THICK plastic bags that many people did not reuse, no doubt. It was much more wasteful than paying for the one time use (which I use them for trash can liners and such when I can) bags. Restaurants can get away with it though. Or if you get takeout, it’s in a free bag.

I almost exclusively use the reusable bags for my grocery shopping and Target/Walmart stops. I keep them in the van and it's just routine now. Hate plastic and the only place that has paper bags around here is the grocery store. Reusable bags hold so much more and that means less trips from the trunk to the kitchen. As far as seeing others using reusable bags: I see more people using them at stores like Fresh Thyme, Aldi's, our local grocery store (Coborn's) and less people using them at Walmart. I'd say Target is 50/50.
