My flight was a disaster. I sat next to an older gentleman from Dubai who loved Coke and was clueless about plane etiquette. When he pulled my tray down and used my USB to charge his phone I was about 90% sure I was being punked! He also passed gas then pinched his own nose while fumbling with his seat belt and running off to the bathroom. 10 hours of pure torture. 735 to upgrade to First Class would have been money well spent. I've already changed my return flight. Now for the update! "He" met me at baggage claim wearing a top hat and holding a sign fashioned out of cardboard and red duct tape . We had a little trouble finding the condo but by 4:00p.m. I was getting ready for our first date. We had a lovely time and had some yummy Thai food. Saturday he stopped by and we had breakfast at a hotel across the street then we got sucked into a marathon of this show called "Life Below Zero" and just lazed around. I fell asleep somewhere into the 8 or 9th episode and woke up to him hanging out my window with his camera. Kinda scared the crap out of me because we are up on the 37th floor and I didn't know the windows opened. He bored me with some talk about time lapse photos and I bored him with videos of my cute nephew then we had dinner at my fav Shabu Shabu place. Sunday was a bit more adventurous. We drove around the entire island stopping to eat at food trucks or to jump in the water. We had our first kiss too a couple minutes later he was holding my hand while I floated and I turned to him and said "I don't look like a beached whale do I?" he replies "Nope, a graceful dolphin". Quick on his feet this one! I think this trip is doing a good job of fleshing out fantasy versus reality and I'm really enjoying getting to know him. 9/27 Update I've been back home for a couple days now and have had some time to "process" the trip without the romantic back drop. While I'm still really happy I went out to visit the "reality" of it all is kinda heartbreaking. I think we both were really surprised at how short the visit felt and taken aback by how sad the goodbye was. I didn't expect to get teary eyed and I certainly didn't expect him to boo-hoo. Currently we are both settling back into our lonely existences and from our recent interactions he seems almost angry at me for leaving. California is still a go. There doesn't seem to be a lot of in between in long distance relationships so my prediction is this will either fizzle before Cali or he will move to D.C. in the coming months. So in short the trip was amazing but the aftermath kinda sucks.

Glad to read your update! I literally lol'd @ your seatmate. I hate flying. I'd have been looking for the hidden camera too!

Thank goodness he seems to share no characteristics with your seat mate, huh?

I too, am glad to read your update. It does sound like your seatmate was goofing on you. I'm glad that you are getting to know "him."

I like how you said "he bored me with blah blah and I bored him with blah blah." That tells me you're being realistic. Have a great rest of your trip!

Thank you for the update. Your flight sounds awful, but it adds to the story! Thanks for suffering for our entertainment. I hope the rest of the trip is magical.

I admire your adventurous spirit. This may turn out to be the start of something major in your life... or it just may be fodder for many years of "you'll never believe this" stories. But you'd never know which if you hadn't gone in the first place.
Keep us posted! (And the mama in me adds, be safe.)

how adventurous! That sounds like, except for the flight, it was lots of fun. Even the flight will make for a great story, though.

just went back and read the first thread once I saw this one, and I say "good for you for going for it to see what could happen!" It sounds like it started out good (after the flight, that is), and keep us updated!!
(and yes, sometimes you have to be adventurous if you don't want to miss out-- I met my BF thru match.com, and went away with him for the weekend after only a couple weeks of meeting... spent a couple days in AZ picking up his last belongings, then drove back to IL in a U-Haul truck-- 24 hours in a U-Haul truck is a good way to get to know someone, for sure!! lol!! And here we are, 10 years later, still together. Sometimes it doesn't take long at all to 'know' when you find something that works.)

Thanks ladies. He is just the cutest thing! You know how some men are super super corny and you can almost see that gleam when they have a really funny "joke" but they need you to say "whos there" for it to make sense. Hahaha he has one of those like every 20 mins. I kinda like watching the hope leave his eyes when I don't fall into the joke...yep I'm heartless. Like I said its a lot of fleshing out fantasy vs reality and I'm getting a real idea of who is he as a person. Stuff I never picked up on Skype. So far my favorite thing about him besides his penchant for corny jokes is he knows a little about everything and it makes for interesting conversation. He has the typical artist vibe...really laid back but sees the difference between pink and dusty rose. Things I'm not digging is his horrible fashion sense (old man nondescript black sneakers) and dude is messy!! I'm happy.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of in between in long distance relationships so my prediction is this will either fizzle before Cali or he will move to D.C. in the coming months. So in short the trip was amazing but the aftermath kinda sucks. On your latest update...honestly, I don't remember the circumstances (other than the distance) but I have been following your updates. And from experience, I can tell you the aftermath ALWAYS sucks. When I met my now dh, he lived in Massachusetts and I lived in Michigan. He was 17 and I was 20. He hadn't even graduated from high school yet and I was in college. While we hit it off RIGHT away and I knew I wanted to marry him immediately, I really thought the logistics of it all would fall apart. Living that far apart seemed like torture...and even more so after we met in person 4 months after we met online. That first goodbye was hard...but it solidified what I'd felt all along - that I couldn't imagine not having him in my life. Each visit after the first only got worse but I knew I had to hold on. We lived long distance for about 11 months. I won't lie - it sucked in every way. But now, 17 years (15 of that married) and 3 kids later, best decision of my entire life. I wish you the very best and since I'm a hopeless romantic, I hope that you can find some way for it to work.

brandy327 your story gives me hope. I was/am feeling down so thanks for sharing. Your kids are really growing up BTW! Congrats on the new pup! I'm sorry you're feeling down. Even though it's been many years, I can still remember the dread of being apart, the loneliness...so I really empathize. It helped a little when we made concrete plans of when we were going to see each other again, and even more when I made the decision to move out east and solidified a date. But it was still really difficult. I'll be rooting you two on all the way! And thank you! The kids really are growing up way too quickly. The girls will be 10 in the beginning of November and it just doesn't seem possible that we've had them around for 10 years already. LOL And ds will be 12 next May. And the pup - he's such a lovebug but man is he full of energy!!

Well, I'm glad the trip was a success, but sorry you are in such a funk at it being over.
You know there are two completely opposite sayings about this type of situation: 1. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. 2. Out of sight, out of mind.
I think they are both true. But only one will apply to any given separation. So time will tell, dear girl. Either the separation will leave you longing more and more for him. Or you will gradually adapt to his absence and move on. Either way... you get your answer. With time.
;)Keep us posted!

His smoldering tshirt model look. I'm feeling better today. I had a lot of Nutella last night and put on my big girl panties and will let the chips fall where they may.
