I’m in the dark about SC. I know there’s an almost 800 page thread but I just don’t have that kind of time.
What happened over there?
What’s the kit for $5 and do I need it?
Anything else I need to know?
Sorry if I’m beating a dead horse...and thanks for welcoming me over here!

About half of it is filled with people who were ticked off by their business practices. Then there is some side chatting about other topics and once in a while someone goes missing and then the hounds are released.
As far as the $5 kit, the thread will tell you that you get what you pay for and that most of them aren't worth the $5.
Jump on the Tuesday Morning threads or the challenges if you'd like!
Welcome!

The sc thread is more of a kinship/sisterhood of those of us who got screwed over by sc. the long and short of it is that they are a crummy business. But the $5 kits are great if you can get them on a month to month sub and cancel that before the next month sub. They are not worth full price.
Come join us on the thread if you dare! Rarely do we even talk about sc anymore because they’ve successfully ran their company into the ground.

I thnk I’ve posted twice in the 800 pages, but I’ve read 90% of it. My synopsis is: 1. Studio Calico is shady so don’t buy from them. But if there is something you really like it’s ok, and everybody has your back when it doesn’t work out. 2. sleepingbooty makes awesome gifs 3. Sometimes there are good SC sales and discounts which everyone shares. However, refer back to #1 and proceed with caution.

I did use a coupon recently to get the two SC monster roller stamps with date and time .....all was fine but it’s very much caveat emptor!

Oh and I use the $5 kit deals to cover shipping for other stuff I want that’s on sale, like paper and cardstock.

There is a lot of making fun (or worse, ha) of their products and designs, mostly because they historically haven't done a good job of listening to their customers. But no one over in the thread will ever fault you for liking their products. It's more that people have become jaded by the way they have handled their business and treated their customers.

I am under the impression that any kits are kind of a, imho, a bait and switch offer. When you order from SC, somewhere in the fine print, in your new order, you agree by buying the kit you agree to you are signing up for a subscrition that you are NOT able to cancel past a certain date. There are ways to avoid being tricked into a long term subscription, including getting a visa type gift card or canceling by a certain date. Keep all emails to and from SC.
This seems to be the basics of buying from SC. If I wrong, please chime in.

There are ways to avoid being tricked into a long term subscription, including getting a visa type gift card or canceling by a certain date. Keep all emails to and from SC. You need to unsub before the 25th of the month which is not unreasonable for a kit club. They release their new kits on the 1st so that's 5 to 6 days in between which is not a lot of time for them. Over three weeks to cancel if you order when the new kits are released is also plenty of time. They release sneaks of the upcoming kits on Instagram starting around the 15th of month so you have enough time and sneaks (albeit those tend to downplay the actual presence of pink) to decide whether you want to continue or quit. I have a lot of criticism for SC but their cut-off cancellation date is not part of it. When the code(s) function(s), we tend to do a PSA on the SC Refugees thread to remind fellow Peas to check they have cancelled their kit on time or to do so on the final day it is possible. The only annoying bit is that you have to start a conversation from your account to get it cancelled rather than just click a button. Otherwise, I think their month-to-month sub cancellation policy is rather fair. Finally, if you miss out on the deadline, SC allows you to skip a month on your sub (not twice in a row though) so you can still skip a month before the 1st of the next month if you missed the 25th-of-the-month deadline and then cancel your subscription the next month.

It's totally possible though as I checked this month with my $5 m-2-m kit by following SC's FAQ directions. I didn't validate the skipping in the end because I wanted to cancel (and I'm too much of a forget-it-all to actually go through with it) but I did check what they were claiming and it seemed to work just fine. Here are the official directions:

I've skipped a kit or two in the past when I had a sub and it worked fine. You just click a button by a certain date.

Thanks for the info sleepingbooty. I thought I remembered people thinking they got a great deal and then were notified they had to pay for an additional 6 months, I guess not.

Thanks for the info sleepingbooty . I thought I remembered people thinking they got a great deal and then were notified they had to pay for an additional 6 months, I guess not. Before they did away with the codes entirely (not counting that they've been doing random $5 codes for just one kit the past couple of months), several months ago they changed them so you couldn't use them on m2m subs...only the longer term ones. Those people probably signed up using those codes not realizing what they were getting themselves into.

As long as you use a code that is valid for month-to-month subscriptions (there are some deals that are only available for 6 or 12-month subs but the current SB kit code some of us used to get the May SB kit for $5 is open for m-2-m) and make sure you subscribe to the month-to-month option before checking out, you are fine.
