i'm going to make a quilt/blanket out of some vintage floral sheets
i can not decide if i want to use batting
or if i want it thinner
is there something else y'all can recommend as a middle layer?
i don't think i want it to be 'heavy and warm' but a 'light blanket'
i'm probably overthinking this

Some people use flannel as a middle for a lightweight quilt.

I have a quilt that was made for me, so I have no actual helpful advice, sorry. But I will say that it does have a thin layer of batting in it, and yet remains a very light-weight quilt. I actually use it all summer long, and I tend to be too warm most of the time, so it would never work for me it was heavy at all. Unfortunately it's falling apart now, which is how I can clearly see there is batting in it...because now the batting is falling out. And I keep using the poor thing because I love how light it is.

If so, this fabric has it. At one point I did have someone try to fix it, but they said the fabric would just continue to tear apart from just regular movement. It needs to be let go, but I am very stubborn sometimes.

The flannel thing would never have occurred to me either. I read an article about making a quilt out of dress shirts (cutting them up for blocks) and they used flannel as the middle layer, for body and stability - and it kept the quilt a nice summer weight.
Though I'd love to tell you I'm just SO SMART. LOL

That sounds lovely! Though a heads up that my childhood blanket was patched with old sheets, which eventually wore out too. Hopefully, your sheets are in better shape than what my mom used (I'm pretty sure they were already worn out when she used them as patches).

Yes, I would go with a layer of white (or whatever color) flannel, too.

Bamboo batting is used in summer weight quilts. Fat Quarter Shop carries an exclusive line of batting, Happy Cloud, and has a bamboo version at a reasonable price.

Batting comes in all weights. I would pick a solid wool blend, because your vintage sheets need a stable base.
Some people might recommend that you use iron-on stabilizer.

I would recommend pre-washed white or off white flannel material or sheets for the batting. I think you would want something between your top and backing so you can’t see the other fabric when the quilt is out. Wash the flannel material or sheets several times so it doesn’t shrink.
The bamboo lightweight batting is also a good suggestion.
Depending on how vintage or thin the sheets are, you would need to decide if you are going to use a stabilizer.
Another thing is to consider the needle you’ll use as the higher the thread count of those sheets, the tighter the weave. Also look at your stitch length when quilting.

I’ve been collecting vintage sheets for more than a year to eventually make a quilt out of them. I’d planned to use flannel or muslin as batting in mine. I actually have a whole load of vintage sheets to wash soon as I had an epic thrift shopping weekend.

I would love to see your finished quilt! I love quilts. My grandmother quilted over 100 quilts after she retired from being a bookkeeper. I have stacks and stacks at my house, and I divided them with my only sibling.
One particular quilt that was given to my husband when we married 40 years ago, my grandmother took a plaid flannel for the outsides and used a US Navy issue wool blanket for the batting. She didn't quilt it but tied it with yarn. It is very heavy and my husband still sleeps under it every day no matter the weather. I recently read about "heavy" blankets being helpful to autistic children and others who feel anxious and I think that is what my husband loves about that heavy quilt.
I would love a light weight one for summer. My grandmother used a fairly thick batting on most of her quilts so they are a tad warm for me for summer.
Happy quilting!

If you are going to use flannel, make sure it is of great quality and good tight weave.
You want to make sure that you don't put stress on the vintage fabric. I ran across an article about this. Now I will have to find it again.

I made my first (and only completed) quilt from sheets and a thin cotton batting. I think flannel would be great! I ended up hand tying this because I wasn't very good at machine quilting. A super thin layer in the middle like flannel might have made a difference. ![]()

Anything with polyester, especially the thread, will, over time, cut the fabric due to the "polyester" content, even if there is some cotton in the fabric and the thread. Cotton is natural, polyester isn't.
