The former NAACP leader who resigned after her parents revealed she's not African-American, is facing a felony theft charge for welfare fraud. Rachel Dolezal, who legally changed her name to Nkechi Diallo in 2016, was charged this week with theft by welfare fraud, perjury and false verification for public assistance. According to court documents, Diallo illegally received $8,747 in food assistance and $100 in child care assistance from August 2015 through November 2017. The investigation started in March 2017 when a state investigator received information that she had written a book. The investigator reviewed Diallo's records and found that she had been reporting her income as usually less than $500 per month. However, court documents show she deposited nearly $84,000 into her bank account without reporting it. According to the case file, the money came from her memoir, "In Full Color," as well as speaking engagements, soap making, doll making, and the sale of her art. www.wfla.com/national/rachel-dolezal-who-represented-herself-as-black-accused-of-welfare-fraud/1203561429Did anyone see the documentary The Rachel Divide? The origin of her crazy is laid out in such a way that even bitter Olan could sympathize.

Her story is so sad, and also so pathetic. I did watch the documentary. I felt so sad for her kids. They were so conflicted and so hurt by everything she has done, and the backlash against her, and yet, they still love her and kind of need her. Why on earth did she have another baby recently? Those kids are victims, and she has serious mental problems for which I hope she gets help.
However, what blew me away from that documentary was her art. I had no idea she was an artist, and she is actually dang good! Very good! I don’t know why she hasn’t capitalized more on her artistic abilities.
The whole situation is very sad and twisted. I hope the children find some stability, and I hope she gets the mental health help she desperately needs.

Mental illness is a sad thing to watch from the side.
I wonder if she realizes she is mentally off balance, but can't get control--or if she just lives in her world and does not understand others being outraged by her antics.

Another marketable skill though it would be hard to get black clientele. Bad parenting can ruin people. I hope she heals.

I found the Netflix documentary both captivating and incredibly sad. It was difficult to watch because you could see the story of her life coming undone, both in the revelations about her past and in the present of filming. I remember feeling so disappointed when she went to change her name and decided to double-down on her black identity stance. I was hoping she would change her last name to hide in plain sight, like her oldest son/brother had suggested. Alas.
I hope her children find a way through this without too much damage although I'm not sure that is actually possible. Sigh.

I know I said bad parenting ruins people but I think somehow the boys will manage. Actually, I think it will be her children who will finally get through to her. I had to watch 3 episodes of the Office to recover my mood after watching it. But yes very captivating. And because I needed someone to unpack it all with I made light of its depressing nature so I could get my sister to watch.

Oh man. Her poor kids. I did watch The Rachel Divide and I was hoping and hoping during the course of it, that she would eventually apologize to those she hurt, and make changes going forward for the sake of her children. But by the end I sadly realized that she's still making everything all about her and not fully seeing or perhaps not caring enough about what her actions had done and were still doing. And now this. I just feel for her kids and her brother & sister. The baby is too young to know what a mess he's been born into yet, but the other three just broke my heart as they spoke out and reacted to how her actions were impacting their lives.

I have only seen one image that they claim is plagiarized, and, admittedly, it does look very similar to another original painting. But, the fact remains, she has created some beautiful original pieces. She shouldn’t have to pretend. She has bonafide talent. My prayers go out to her kids. They seem like amazing young men. I do hope they break the cycle. Erin

Wow, I wonder how different the responses would be if a Republican/conservative well-known was charged with the same crime. I doubt the sympathy would be so profuse.

I recently watched the documentary after hearing a blurb on it on npr, had no idea about her upbringing when all this first came to light.
Her art also blew me away- she is super talented.
It’s a very sad and convoluted mess, her life. Her boys (one of whom was her brother she got custody of, right?) are extremely well presented in the documentary, so I have to think she is doing some things right in her life. It did make me think, a lot, the documentary.
