I've been noticing more flights overhead and wondered what hazards may exist for homes situated below heavy flight paths. I came across this National Geographic article which talks about the exhaust killing more people than plane crashes and how the toxic emissions can travel and affect other locations. Guess I shouldn't be too worried about the airplanes I can see, and worry more about the ones I don't see:

I can believe it. I can only imagine how bad it is in large cities.
We live about 8 miles from the airport but we are on the direct path of the planes. We also live near a major highway. I have noticed that there is a blackish film/dirt, who knows what, that builds up over time on surfaces indoors and out. I can only think that it relates to the exhaust.
My friend lives in a different city in New England very close to the airport and she has noticed the same thing too.

That's it... ban the airplane! Seriously, though, when my family lived in Greece we were directly below the flight path to Athens International Airport. Yep, the air was pretty bad some days depending on the weather and airflow.

I never thought about it, but it makes sense when you think about all of the problems that occur from car exhaust & emissions.

I lived on the river, directly under a PDX flight path. Each time a plane passed overhead little oil drops would make rainbow circles as they hit the water. Those same droplets had to be falling on me, yet I never felt them, they were so tiny. We moved from a life we loved for our health concerns.
