I'm kicking off the month with a positive experience I had yesterday. I went to an estate sale. To say they had wonderful things and a beautifully decorated home would be an understatement. Instead of telling you what I liked it would be easier to tell you what I didn't like. The family was very nice and put forth every effort to make sure shoppers had a positive experience.
I walked away with:
- Freestanding Annalee snowman more than 21 inches tall. - Annalee Christmas stocking with mouse peeking out of the toe. - Annalee dog wearing an Uncle Sam hat with a firework. It was so goofy it was cute. I have a handful of Annalee dolls that I think are cute. I don't think all Annalee's are cute though. I've seen some that seem a little creepy.
- new in the box light fixture - magnets with numbers and names of the month. They might help with due dates or event dates on the fridge. - small Sterlite 3 drawer organizer - fishing hat - Ott light that is the same as one I have already. - throw rug - glass bird - resin bird figurine - gold luster teapot - some hardcover books on history - crystal drop to hang in window - Lenox tissue box cover. It's in the Christmas pattern that has a bird in it. My sister-in-law who usually hosts Christmas Eve has that pattern and it will be a nice hostess gift.
I'd love to go back, but today will be a longer day at work than usual and I have a wedding to go to tomorrow.
Wishing you success in your hunting this weekend. Don't forget to share your experiences in this thread.
Lurkers, please join in. Tell us about your adventures, new or old. We have great people on this monthly thread and would like to welcome people to share their experiences/finds. The more the merrier!

This seems like a good place to ask - Where did heartcat go? I remember when she posted her fabulous finds.

Went to my favorite thrift store yesterday to buy clothes for my trip coming up. I don't need anything fancy and it is out in the country so a good chance to get dirty/stained so I didn't want to buy brand new. Got ten shirts, two bathing suits, a cardigan, and a couple of shorts.
Also got a handful of books for my oldest and some bathing suits for them. The best find was a cute red and white polka dot rolling suitcase for $3! Perfect for my youngest.
And this was just a funny observation but I like buying handmade doilies, cleaning them up, and framing them for art. As I was walking through the store's boutique section yesterday, I see a framed doily (which wasn't framed very nice TBH) with a price of $20. This place has doilies listed from $1.50 to $4 and frames for a dollar or two. Just thought it was funny that I could literally recreate the finished piece with stuff from the same store for a quarter of the price.

Went to an auction the other night only because one of the framed pictures they had on website were the gates of the college I work at. Was a numbered print by a known artist. Scored it for $5. Have hanging on the wall behind my desk already!

I missed thrifting while I was gone, so hit the thrift store on Tuesday afternoon. They must have restocked while they were closed for Memorial Day because I found several good things. Six balls of Rowan 'Damask' yarn. It's a pretty variegated blue, made of viscose/linen/acrylic. Not sure if I will keep it, or list on eBay. Also found a cute Disney Expedition to Everest mini snow globe and a really nice glass ornament in the original box. Picked up a new tray w/napkins, the kind you put out in the powder room. That went into the gift drawer for a future hostess gift, though I am tempted to keep because it is so pretty! Picked up 9 new, uncut sewing patterns. Two are for Halloween costumes and the others are Vogue designer patterns, all out of print. Need to get those listed. My favorite find though was just as I was about to check out. I happened to be by the stockroom door when they rolled out a rack of household linens/curtains. Immediately I spotted one of the vintage floral tablecloths that I've collected for years! I rarely see them anymore and they are usually expensive when you do. Felt a little silly, but I followed the rack to the linens department and pounced! Turns out there were three vintage tablecloths and one cross stitched Christmas tablecloth (the kind you do from a kit). Be still my heart! I bought all four of them...for just $5/each. Turns out one of the floral tablecloths is a large rectangle (hard to find) and in near mint condition. One small stain I may be able to get out. It and the cross stitched cloth are perfect fits for my table when the leave is in. The two smaller tablecloths do have old stains, but I will try to get them out with the vintage linen soak I use. If not, they will make great cutters for projects.

Pretty! I swear my grandma had that second Christmas tablecloth. Or maybe my mom? One of them. I hate it when I see something good coming in from the back because I don't want to hassle the person putting it out. But I want it!

myboysnme, heartcat became super busy with work and if I remember right she has a grandchild now. If I'm wrong, please chime in. **GypsyGirl**, I love those tablecloths. I believe my sister has the 2 in your last photo. bigbundt, I feel the same about new stuff coming out of the backroom of the store. I feel like a circling shark, lol.

WTH went to two goodwills today. They changed the clothes so that it’s sorted by color not size. Really of the 3,000 items I want to look through them all to find the 20 tops that are 2x. Guess I won’t be buying clothes there anymore! 😑

My Goodwill is currently by size. I hope they don't switch by color. I don't look for myself, but I look for t-shirts for the kids and golf shirts for my husband.

My Good Will sorts clothes by size, and within each, color. I would not look at clothes if they went by just color. It would take all day! My dd is moving, so we've been looking for items she needs. I love when our GW gets a shipment of new things from Target. Over the past couple of months we've picked up a pair of gray black-out curtains, a bamboo wood silverware tray organizer, oil rubbed bronze floor lamp with a drum shade, 4 soup bowls with painted patterns inside and out, a teal Windham wood library cabinet with glass doors and drawer, kitchen gadgets, 8 stemless wine glasses and a 9x12 gray and white quatrefoil print rug - all NWT or in packaging, but deeply discounted. I also found her a Chicago Cutlery knife block with knives, a wire shoe rack for her garage (she's a nurse and shoes stay out!), 8 copper mugs, 2 pair of scrub pants, and numerous pieces of white milk glass (including 2 cake stands) which she collects. That's just what I've found for her.....I find nice stuff out thrifting!

It takes long enough to look through them the way they're arranged NOW; I can't imagine rifling through them without any size differentiation at all. (of course, sometimes things get re-hung in the wrong section, so you can never be quite sure...) I haven't gone thrifting lately, other than the used bookstore... I bought myself some reading material for my birthday; I got $20 worth of scrapbooking magazines (the earliest was from the year 2000, so it's a great walk down memory lane- pun intended!!), and found two MAD magazines for $1.50 each that were from the 1970s-- the era when I would read my older brother's magazines, lol. (of course I didn't understand a lot of the humor when I was a kid, but they were totally a nostalgia type purchase-- and a lot funnier now.) I also picked up Season 3 of a (very cheesy) television series that I love on DVD to watch while I'm scrapbooking.

numerous pieces of white milk glass (including 2 cake stands) which she collects. Lucky! I've been collecting milk glass since I was a freshman in high school before it was popular so it was in every thrift store and lots of pieces super cheap. In the last few years I rarely see it and when I do it is priced high. I was excited to see a piece last week in my thrift store but when I looked closer, it had a chip AND it was $6! Pass.

numerous pieces of white milk glass (including 2 cake stands) which she collects. - In all my thrifting years, I have yet to run across any milk glass. Maybe it wasn't a thing here in Texas? If I ever run across a milk glass cake plate though, it's coming home with me! kkooch - You find the most amazing advertising items! Do you have a certain room you display them all, or are they scattered throughout the house? That M&M radio is adorable!

I use to have it all in one room, had like 3 huge built in shelves. I packed it all up when I "thought" I'd be selling the house sooner than later. So right now they are sort of all over, all the things I bought since packing up. I do have 3 different water type m&m's that I will bring to work once it's officially summer. All are radios of some sort, the one with flippers and goggles on, spear fishing etc. Will look super cute in my cubicle.

Update on my linens. After soaking for 48 hours in Retro Clean, I'm happy to say that the stain on the red/white mistletoe tablecloth came out! I can't wait for Christmas to be able to put it on my table. Unfortunately, the stains on the two smaller tablecloths did not come out. They will be good for layering and/or cutters for other projects. Word of advice to anyone using table linens/napkins. Never, never, never, ever put linens that have been stained into the dryer! I can't stress that enough. The heat will irreversibly set the stains. Hang them to dry and then try other methods to get the stains out. That includes dry cleaning if you must. There are times it will be a lost cause, but many times I am able to get the stains out. Off my clothing & textiles soap box for now! PS: This goes for clothing as well. Heat + stains = bad news.

Okay, crimsoncat05 , you've piqued my interest. What cheesy television series? not one that a lot of people would have watched, I'm guessing... the series Highlander, starring Adrian Paul. "I am Duncan MacLeod, of the Clan MacLeod..." I loved that tv show when it was on- both for the sci-fi fantasy element of the Immortal story line, and for the Adrian Paul eye candy, lol!! I have never seen any M&M items like that before! I don't think I've seen any M&M items where they've been wearing any clothes or doing activities like fishing, actually. All these thrifting finds are making me nostalgic... I used to collect a lot of cottage-y antiques (before we moved to Arizona and they didn't fit our decor anymore), and had a large collection of milk glass bud vases-- back when you could find them for only $1 or $2 each at the thrift store. I displayed them in the window of my kitchen, where the sun could shine through the glass in the afternoon. I might have to buy a couple and display them in my craft room. I also had a huge collection of printed floral tablecloths... the colors and patterns are all so vibrant! Are the prices for those as high as they used to be? I used to see them at flea markets for $40-$50 (or more) each. ETA: IIRC, I think when milk glass was new, it used to be used a lot by flower shops. That might be why things like certain patterns of bud vases are so common? I'm kind of surprised there's a part of the country where it's not seen in thrift stores.

Okay I am posting before even reading... I had one of the BEST garage sale shopping day. Even though: 1. It was the day after I got back from Europe so I am exhausted 2. Sick with a head cold 3. LAUNDRY up the wazoo and 4. I needed to clean house and mow the lawn...
SO DD who is 21 who NEVER wants to go garage sales wants to go. We are both feeling icky and she wants to go to some garage sales? WHATT?? So I give in and say okay...
We pile into the car, my DDs (21 and 10), both dogs because the girls want to bring them.. OYE..... Start out and this is what I found!
1. A HUGE distressed (looks brand new) wooden American Flag.. to put on the house... $5!!! I stopped at the sale and jumped out of the car and asked how much and some guy said $5.. I said SOLD. Gave him the money. Still looking around and a lady is looking at it and wants to buy it.. I jump right back to it and said I just bought it. She was MAD and left. I guess she had asked how much and then left.. meanwhile I drove up and bought it and by the time she came back it was sold. I never did see her in the first place. DD said she saw her leaving but didn't think anything of it. But I wasn't willing to give up that deal! I can't wait to hang it up.
2. My DD who is 10, found a collectible Breyer horse for $10. Don't know if that was a good deal, I know they are expensive.. so I let her buy one. She LOVES horses!!
3. Then at the 3rd garage sale, we found 15 books for her, all horse stories... all part of some series. for $3.
4. Then I found a couple of carpets for the house for a couple of dollars. My one dog keeps peeing on my current one.. so now I have a few in rotation when she has an accident. (she is an old Husky.. poor thing)
5. A big wicker basket so I can put blankets in.. my old one just fell apart... got it for $1.. it's perfect for 3 or 4 blankets.
6. A Smash book, 3 CTMH punches and 5 12x12 coral paper and 4 8x8 small albums all for around $10.
I think that was it... it was a good day even though I had no business going out! haha

I also had a huge collection of printed floral tablecloths... the colors and patterns are all so vibrant! Are the prices for those as high as they used to be? I used to see them at flea markets for $40-$50 (or more) each. Prices are down from what they used to command. I bought most of mine before they got so popular, paying only $2-5 each. There are a couple that I paid more for. One from Scotland cost about $20, but those are harder to find and it was in fantastic condition. There used to be booths full of these at Round Top Antiques Festival, but now they barely make an appearance. That look is out and as a result the prices have fallen. 2. My DD who is 10, found a collectible Breyer horse for $10. Don't know if that was a good deal, I know they are expensive.. so I let her buy one. She LOVES horses!! It really depends on the specific horse. The average horse will sell for between $10-20. There are special ones, and the more collectible ones that will go for more. We have a quite a few of those, in the original box, because DD was/is a horse nut. She got a new one for every Christmas. One year she finally wrote on her Christmas list..."a Horse (a real one!). Further down the list was a request for a specific Breyer horse as well.

crimsoncat05, I think I might have seen some of that series on Netflix at one point. It looks interesting (in a good way). workingclassdog, I say to heck with laundry when there is a tag sale nearby, lol. You used to be able to get vintage floral tablecloths for $5 here until they went sky high. They are about $25 to $30 here right now. Being in New England we don't have a bunch of modern looking homes so those vintage tablecloths still work in most peoples homes. What's crazy here right now are linen dishtowels. I used to buy them for almost nothing. Usually 25 cents each and certainly never more than $1. At the auction the other week a single one sold for $7. What the heck??? I buy them to use them, not display them or make crafts.

All this talk of milk glass reminds me that my mother collected milk glass vases to put on all of the tables for my oldest sister's wedding. We had them and used them for all kinds of functions afterward.
When our family got rid of them they were no longer popular. Now if we were trying to get rid of them people would be fighting over them.
Some really unusual milk glass has started popping up around here but people are wanting a lot of money for it.

I decided to go to Goodwill after work after reading this mornings posts.
A while ago they started putting little things in bags and hanging them on pegs just like Savers does. I bought one bag that included: 2 little vintage figurines that remind you of Occupied Japan (my one sister collects them), a figurine that might be Napco (the label underneath is a little messed up), a clay turtle that reminds me of the one in the B.C. comics, vintage Avon bottle, a metal initial which is one of my kids, and a handblown Daisy Duck figurine. The entire lot was $2.99.
A Dynaware mini casserole dish. It reminds me of Pyrex. Shocked that they only charged .99 cents for it. I think it would be a great size for french onion soup.
A bag of toy cars and a vintage, plastic Santa in a sleigh with 3 reindeers. It is complete and in great shape. I wonder if it was a cake decoration originally. That bag was $2.99.
I finished it off with a new Izod golf shirt for my husband for $4.99. I'm sad to say they have changed our store to being sorted by color for clothes, boo, hiss.
Happy with my finds I decided to go to Salvation Army as well. They must have just put out the stuff that I found because I think it would have been scooped up fast. I got:
- 2 vintage, wooden candlesticks for .99 cents each.
- 1 vintage, wooden candlestick, tole painted, .99 cents.
- vintage planter, .99 cents.
- mini, scored garlic peeling bowl, .99 cents. It's handmade pottery. I've never seen a small one before. They had a lot of handmade pottery which I suspect came from the same donor.
- mini china plate with cute bird pattern, .99 cents.
- And lastly, because I was probably thinking of kkooch's painted furniture, a small 2-tier table to try to paint, $9.99. I hope I do as good a job with it as she does with her finds.
