WTH went to two goodwills today. They changed the clothes so that it’s sorted by color not size. Really of the 3,000 items I want to look through them all to find the 20 tops that are 2x. Guess I won’t be buying clothes there anymore! 😑 I pray our Goodwill doesn’t do this.

I almost asked the cashier why they switched sorting by size to sorting by color; but, she was giving off a crabby vibe so I was afraid to ask.

Our GW and my favorite independent store sort by color, they also divide the racks into three sections Petite, Regular, And Larger size (XL and up). Each is subsetted by sleeve length.
Now that I'm typing this I wonder if the managers have control issues - that's a lot of sorting. I like it, on the odd trip where I have something specific in mind it makes it very easy.

That's a lot of sorting, questioning. I'm curious if the amount of sorting they do increases their sales by much.

Maybe my store will eventually sort into the three sections like yours does, that would definitely be a huge help. I can't imagine what it was like when they first changed the stores to the new sorting system. Granted, now that it's done it should be much easier for them.

I think if the GWs around me ever go to color-but-not-size, there would be a LOT less money spent from shoppers of all types. Ours sort something like:
Tops: Sleeveless tops; short-sleeved knit tops short-sleeved blouses (not knit, basically); long-sleeved; sportswear; jackets/blazers.
Bottoms: pants; capri-length; jeans; shorts; skirts.
Dresses (sleeveless/strapless; regular); 2-pc sets; pajamas.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- Then within each of those categories, they sort by size (S, M, L, XL) and put them on the rack in color order within each size (mostly- it's always worth a quick look thru the other sizes). I think maybe they have a few more sections here than stores in other parts of the country might-- because the weather is so hot, there are always a LOT of sleeveless shirts and a LOT of capri-length pants.

That's a lot of sorting, questioning . I'm curious if the amount of sorting they do increases their sales by much. Interesting question! It's been that way since I started going there - at least four years. All the Goodwills in the area sort table top items by color too. Makes it super easy if you collect a certain china pattern or need a certain color for a gameday party. Like with clothes, I still have to go down each aisle because you just don't know what's out there.

I heard one of the manager types be very crabby with the shelvers because they aren't following her directions. It was like a bad management video, scolding a group of employees in the aisles with a tone in her voice.

The selection is so much nicer at Salvation Army.

I agreed a week or so ago to take my 15 yr old dd and her friend "thrifting" today. Apparently the friend had never been to a Goodwill or a Salvation Army store! My dd is used to thrift store shopping and is amazed at the new "thrifting" trend. They had fun at both stores. Her friend is petite and slim so she easily found some cute jean shorts (Hollister, Abercrombie, etc)at $3 each and a sweater that matches my dd favorite cardigan. I think she is hooked on thrift store shopping! Even though we were in a not so great area I let them shop and walk next door to Arby's for lunch & came back to pick them up... the friend had never been to Arby's so that amused my dd. I picked up a few books and a USPS stamp album with a bunch of stamp sheets in it for $1.99. I explained to the girls that the value of the uncancelled stamps was much more than the price. Stamps are stamps unless you are a collector.

bettyVery few stamps are worth anything today. Most of the huge collectors have died off and flooded to market with their rare stamps. I can think of a few that have held their value, but those have been counterfeited so you can't be sure.

But they still stick on my letters & packages and pay for the shipping .. and often look PRETTY!! Stamps don't expire. So $1.99 for a bunch of stamp sheets is a good deal.

betty, Finding good stuff thrifting, and Arbys for the first time, it's a day she'll never forget. My kids love the roast beef sandwiches and the curly fries and were so sad when the Arbys closest to us closed. Don't be surprised if you have even more of your daughter's friends coming along for your next thrifting outing.

I had a dilemma this morning. The house behind my house was having a tag sale today and so was a church. I didn't know which one to go to first. My neighbor's Craigslist post sounded good, but, I've been to that church before and it was good, yet somethings are too pricey. I decided to drive by the neighbor and she was set up a full hour early. I ended up stopping in and she was okay with it. I normally wouldn't do that, but even if I didn't get a chance to look around I wanted to let her know about the raccoon that's been out during the day because she has a dog. She was glad I stopped (big sigh of relief). We had a nice conversation and of course, you know I spent some money. She had amazing glass stuff. My sister would have been in heaven.
For $5 I got:
- New in the package, 1000 piece puzzle - A pendant of wood with inlaid shell - cute little salt and pepper shakers that look like teapots - chipped teacup because the picture was so pretty (I may decide to break it up to use the picture in a stepping stone) - 3 piece vintage miniature platter and casserole with lid
From there I went to the church and was the third one in line and waited about 45 minutes for it to open. A friend I made after seeing her at many tag sales was the first in line and we had a great time chitchatting. I'll come back later to post what I got. I bought a lot and I'm very happy with what I got.

I bought a Papasan chair with a dark green cushion for $30 this morning. It is in perfect condition. We brought it back to our cabin, rearranged our furniture and my 15 year old has been curled up in it ever since. I have been wanting one of these for quite a while and am always too slow when they show up on a Facebook sale pages. When we were walking up the driveway to the sale and I saw it, I immediately picked up my pace and claimed it.
I also picked up some useful things like a $3 ironing board, some nice cooking pans for less than $10, nice towels for a couple bucks. My lake place is pretty much outfitted with things that I have bought at garage sales and thrift stores. There were about 20 sales in our immediate area today. Lots of junk out there, but some pretty useful things too.

We had an unexpected sleepover guest last night so I didn't get to post my church purchases. Holy moly, between what I got yesterday and out today you're going to be shocked at how much I got.
Guest still here until tomorrow afternoon, I hope to post then.
Hope you're all out there finding great things at great prices. And, don't forget, we all want to hear about it.

In the last 2 weeks I found a brand new Jo Malone candle with the Nordstrom sticker still on it for $3 and a NIP Kendra Scott necklace for $5! Those are my best deals ever!
I also got a couple of ceramic crocks for $1 to add to my small collection.

Snapped a couple of pictures of some of the "GW treasures" we've collected for dd's new home. She's slowly unpacking, but hasn't moved in yet. She likes teal, so it's an accent color she's decorating with. The tall vase was $5.99 and the smaller pieces, $2.99 & $4.99. I found the mug rack last weekend for $4.99 and the 8 mugs were 99 cents each (2 similar sets). She picked up the bird s&p shakers still in box for 99 cents and the Pioneer Women bowl for $6.99. The teal cabinet was $59.99 from GW, although you can still buy it from Target! I usually stop by our GW once a day when it opens (lucky my work schedule coincides with it). Our store puts out hardlines they get from the previous day before they open. They had a problem with people chasing and grabbing off carts. Clothes, furniture and bulk items are put out throughout the day.

I hit a few yards sales and one estate sale on Saturday on my way to the Farmer's Curb Market. I scored a vintage Pyrex child's plate for a friend, a 8" ceramic light up Christmas Tree for another friend, quite a few plush Made in Japan Christmas ornaments and 4 glass ornaments - the box said "from Yugoslovia from my Mother", a denim Lee jean jacket for me. My GF and I plan on making Shiny Brite wreaths this summer. I spent a total of $20 before reimbursements. I spent more on veggies at the market

My GF and I plan on making Shiny Brite wreaths this summer. That reminds me to report that I did get a big tub of vintage glass ornaments - mostly shiny brites - at a recent estate auction for $15. Most were in their original boxes which is a real plus. A lady also gave me three large reflector glass ornaments that came in a box lot she bought. She wanted the other stuff, but didn't care about the vintage ornaments and offered them to me as she noticed I bought the others. This year I think I'll have to thin out my vintage ornament collection a little. I have so many now it's time to pick the best and let some of the others go.

I plan to hang in on the mirror above our fireplace so I can admire it

I know I'm supposed to be posting my finds from Friday's church tag sale but I had a bunch of it typed in another program and I can't access it. I'll have to have one of the kids figure it out for me after school. So here I go with the earlier part of my day on Saturday instead. First stop was an indoor multi-family tag sale where I found a vintage wooden tool, $1, that I couldn't identify and for fun bought it for a future what is this post (once I start posting pictures, lol). I also bought a new tube of suntan lotion and a tube of after sun skin care lotion for .50 cents each. One of the ladies was a couponer and had bunches of stuff, too bad she didn't have other things I needed. From there to a tag sale that was almost all kids stuff. I got a Matchbox car carrier with a bunch of cars for $3. Next was a tag sale that started the day before. I'm still kicking myself that I didn't go on Friday. I've been to their house before. They have one or two sales a year. The last time I went nothing interested me and the time before that I spent less than a dollar. This time I bought Hallmark Christmas Ornaments. .25 cents each for regular and .50 for motion. I bought 40 ornaments. She overcharged me by $4 but I didn't count my change because I was so excited. I don't mind because it was still a fantastic deal. On the way back down her driveway I spotted more ornaments in a bin on the ground. I found another Hallmark Ornament and a vintage knee hugger elf, .25 cents each. She said she sold tons of them on Friday. I went to an auction at a new place in the morning. I bought a few lots. There was a 10% buyers premium in addition to my listed prices. I bought: - Vintage jewelry lot, $42.50. Italian millefiori pendant in the original box with paperwork, two sterling silver pins, shoe clips, two multi-strand necklaces with beautiful clasps and a bunch of ordinary vintage jewelry. - Lot of animal figurines and two banks. My one sister collects animal figurines. One of the banks is at least 18 inches tall and is a poodle. It's so ugly it's cute. My sister will love it. $1 for the lot. - Lot of Mexican and Indian items, carvings, dolls and candleholders, $4 for all. After I bought the lot, when they were moving the lot they broke two pieces. We all heard the crash. They didn't say sorry or charge me less and I didn't know what to do so I let it go because what I got was still a great deal for $4. You are not allowed to take possession of your purchases until the auction is complete so to my mind, they are still responsible for the items. What would happen at your auction house in that instance, spongemom Scrappants? Like most auctions some stuff went dirt cheap and some things you wonder why people want them or why they're spending so much on them. I'll definitely go back, it was well run and the staff was nice. Went to three more tag sales on the way home. My brother will be happy with the twelve-inch stormtrooper with gun that I bought for $1. He collects Star Wars and I'll give it to him next time he does something with the kids. In the evening I went to my usual auction. I'll post about that later. It's time to get ready for work. What did you find or do this weekend?

Can you say holy crap! Went to my first movers-storage unit auction. I've seen it advertised at this place before but had never gone yet. Let's just say I'll be going back when they have it again. Granted they said it wasn't as crowded as normal but still I'm going back.
I was going to meet my sister there but got there way ahead of her. So hanging outside of the building the auctioneer came over and started to talk to me. He definitely had some great stories about years ago. Anyway, most of the items are lots. Like 50 pieces of amber glass which consisted of vases, serving dishes, plates, candy dishes etc. You name it. There was 4-5 lots of amber alone along with tons of other stuff. In addition to lots of "stuff" there were also couches, kitchen sets, dining room sets, washers, dryers. Prices were low for the quality of the stuff. Then, in the back of the room there were the storage units, you know like you see on tv, BUT they were all unloaded and put onto skids and wrapped in plastic wrap. Some things you could see that it was a dresser or a guitar etc. Definitely cool to see and no idiots like on storage wars :-) One of the units consisted of 3 skids heaped almost to the ceiling. I can't imagine what it was like to unwrap and see all the stuff you got.
So, did I buy anything. Oh yeah. Two lots of the amber glass. I'll attach a picture of "some" of the stuff I got what you'll see in my dishwasher, which I actually hand washed and doesn't include the piles of the big serving plates. I got approximately 145 items for a whopping $11 which was two lots and that includes tax. Can you believe that!!! No wonder people end up doing this for a real job. I sold my other sister some stuff for $17 so already I'm in the profits! Also picked up a "small" tray of green glass items for $1 plus tax. I think there was like 14 things. Either way less than ten cents each! I just realized I'm posting this on a computer vs my phone so the pictures will be separate. (Can someone lead me to where I can find out how to shrink the photo size, I hate that it takes up so much space..thanks).
Because they are a moving company also it was an added bonus because they had great sturdy boxes to use along with the nice wrapping paper!
Can't get the picture to post so I'll try again later. No clue why

I dropped some stuff off from school and got some new books and games for my classroom. Nothing earth shattering, but I did get two Goldiblox sets- brand new, never opened for 1.99 each. They will be fun for my niece. The best part was they out all my kid’s games and books in a Larry Flynt, Hustling, Store for Lovers bag. They had a whole pile of them, they must have been donated too, but it cracked me up.
Also, at school we had a dumpster for teachers to throw stuff away and when I was taking a few things out myself I looked down and there was a huge pile of kids LPs, a huge bag of Lincoln logs, several nice bins, and a nice bin filled with Qbaze maze pieces. That bucket alone was at least a 60.00 worth of those things, it was huge. There were at least 2 sets in there, but I bet there was 3. I grabbed them all. I took some of the records for myself, donated some along with the bins and kept the logs and marble maze for my class. I was actually really annoyed that stuff was all thrown away like that. Usually teachers put the stuff we don’t want in the hall if it is in good shape and other teachers take it or a parent picks the stuff up after our 2 days we are there without kids and donates it. This was not a new teacher throwing this stuff away either, and even if the tradition of leaving it out wasn’t a thing she should have tossed this stuff in her own car and donated it, it is really nice stuff and was all in perfect condition. So wasteful. Sadly she was doing this as I was leaving, I hate to think what else she threw away that I couldn’t rescue. I go in super early to get stuff done before it is too hot and she prefers to work later. I am hoping if she threw anything else away it is on top so I can see, I am heading in in about an hour.

I hear you on this! I'm amazed at the things thrown away, both at work and in town. Why wouldn't you put it out for others? Makes no sense. I belong to a two-town freebie site on facebook and the stuff given away I'm always amazed at. So many people are practically begging for the stuff so why not donate it. Glad you were able to benefit from at least a few items.

What would happen at your auction house in that instance, spongemom Scrappants? We hand items to buyers as they are sold generally - especially smalls. Basically, it is yours once you've been declared the winner of the auction. But if they don't allow you to take possession until after the auction, then it's really their responsibility to keep your items safe until they are handed/delivered to you. At our auction house, the auctioneer would have addressed it if he heard it and had the clerk adjust it in the computer right then. If not, I would adjust it at the cashier's window. It's not right for you to pay for their error.
