Just a warning... this is a long one... Yesterday rates pretty high up on the "Hardest things I've ever done" list. Jerry(my SO of 3 yrs) had Payton before we met but that didn't make today any easier for me. She was just always a part of "us" and when we blended our households, she loved us like we loved her just like we'd always been there. She was so patient, and playful with the kids, even Timothy and his antics (although, I'm pretty sure she liked him best because he never ate a meal that he didn't share with her!). It's so strange to think that she won't be waiting for us at the door to go out as soon as we get home, or laying on the couch (even though she knew she wasn't supposed to!) acting all innocent when she'd get "caught". She won't be squeeking the crazy big toy that I got her at Christmas time (I swear it is almost as big as her!). Her food & water dish are still in the kitchen. Her sleepy blanket is still at the foot of the bed in our bedroom. We all just keep forgetting that we don't need to let her out, or make her come in when we came in from being out in the yard. She wasn't there this afternoon to eat the leftover bits of our breakfast (she loved scrambled eggs!). I do have to say that the staff and doctors at Hometown Veterinary Clinic(New London, IA)were phenomenal. They have been phenomenal through this whole ordeal. So compassionate, and helpful, and they really cared about Payton & all of us when. They go above and beyond. They do extra little things like the candle and sign (I'll post a pic), and the poem, and her pawprint. We chose to bring her home and bury her in the backyard next to her "brother" dog who passed away a few years ago, and they lovingly got her ready and even wrote her name with hearts around it on the bag that they put her in for us to bring her home in. Just the little things like that showed us that they cared. They gave us all the time we needed with her and were so patient. I don't care what anyone says, losing a pet, even one that you've only known for a few years is very very hard. We were right there with her as she went to sleep yesterday afternoon. We take comfort knowing that she isn't hurting anymore, and we believe that one day, we'll see her again, running, and jumping, and rolling in the grass...

Aw, that was very sweet what the vet clinic did. It is extremely hard to loose a pet. Wishing you comfort in knowing that she's at peace now.

I love that poem and her paw print. I’m so very sorry for your loss. Losing one of our fur babies is devastating, Doesn’t matter if you’ve had them a week or a decade. Sending you giant hugs.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I love the candle and the poem - how sweet of your vet clinic.
Years ago when I had to put my pet bunny to sleep, I got a sympathy card in the mail from my vet. I have never forgotten that and in fact am tearing up just thinking about it.
Hugs to you.

So sorry.. it is hard to lose a pet!! We lost a 'pet' last year and she wasn't even our dog but in our lives. My DD took care of 'Lacey', for a friend who worked at the hospital. He worked long hours and didn't like his dog being home alone all day... so my DD helped him out so Lacey spent at least 1/2 her time at our house, which means we were co-parents.. lol.. Funny thing in I did NOT want this dog in my house. DD called me to okay it and as dog lovers I didn't think much about it until she told me it was a Pit Bull mix. I immediately said NO way.. we have other dogs and an 8 year old. Not putting them at risk. She talked me into at least meeting her. She brought Lacey over and within 3 minutes tops, we were ALL in love with this dog. She had the heart of an angel. She was like a 5 pound baby, but was 80 pounds. She was a 'lap dog' She thought she could sleep right between us in bed. Not a single mean bone in her. She loved the other dogs and loved all of us. Sadly soon afterwards we found out she had cancer. She only lived about six months from the time we got to know her until she passed. Towards the end the medicine kinda made her not herself and she wasn't as snuggly and wanted to be by herself. But losing her was painful, just the same as our other pets. I still look for her when I come home waiting to be pounced on by nothing but muscles and love.. Pets can bring us so much joy... and it is always sad to lose them. Just why can't they live a little longer..

I'm teary-eyed reading this. I wrote a long-winded FB post when we had to put our sweet Boxer down 8/14/17. Every time I go back to read it I cry.
And we still have his food bowl in the same spot. It's one of those things, I can't bring myself to "put it away."
So sorry for your loss.

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved friend. I am tearing up at the picture of the candle. My vet office does this. In March my Belle had to have a toe amputated. When I picked her up post- op, the lobby lights were dimmed and the candle was lit. As anxious as I was about carrying a 50 pound dog and caring for her, my heart broke for the family who was going home alone. I am thinking of you all.

I'm soooo sorry for your loss. When you hurt when her special area is empty or she doesn’t greet you, try to think of a good memory. She wouldn’t want you to be sad. ((HUGS))

I am so sorry for your loss. It's incredibly hard to let a pet go. It was nice the doctor's office so showed and requested respect for what you were all going through.
