I find this fascinating. I can't even begin to imagine a book literally being poisonous. And that wallpaper! Can you imagine having that in your home and constantly breathing in those fumes? Being such a book lover though it is the books that really got to me. Thanks so much for posting this Librarylady. You always post such interesting articles and I really appreciate it.

I remember an Agatha Christie book about an arsenic laced wallpaper. Off to google.

Makes me think of Umberto Eco's Il Nome della Rosa. Arsenic laced paper used to kill.

I have a relative in my family tree who was poisoned, we think by the wallpaper.

Older books are very acidic. Very.
When I started working in a library, I wore contacts and they started bothering me. ( the more I handked the older books the more they bothered me) I started rubbing my eyes. My parents ended up taking me to the ER with mild acid irration( mild my ass) of my eyes.
Old books have mold, mildew, and god knows what else. We had books that we had to use gloves and masks to handle.
