A couple weeks ago I was fighting mad allergies (this is new for me) and my doc suggested I take the following:
Zyrtec in the morning (24 hr. pill) - OTC Flonase in the morning (1 squirt each nostril)-prescription Benzonatate (anti-coughing prescription 3 x a day)-prescription Singulair at night before bed-prescription
I am still not having complete relief 2 weeks into this routine. Anyone have a routine that stops the all over itching, drainage down the back of the throat and general feeling of fatigue? TIA!

I take Singular, Zyrtec and Flonase. But I also use a netti pot or irrigation bottle in the shower every day to clear out my sinus and hydrate them. It really really helps. Another thing is that I shower before bed so that my body/hair isn't full of outside allergens while I sleep and I wash my sheets more often in the summer.

I know I should take the shower before bed. I've heard that does wonders to get all the junk off...

I take Singulair and Allegra daily. I also was taking Nasonex, but stopped when I became pregnant. This combination works for me for all allergies but animals. If I'm around a cat or dog, I'm a mess within 5 minutes and have major symptoms for about 24 more hours, often triggering my asthma. I used to get weekly allergy shots, for over 2 years, but never got any relief.

I'm also having a horrible year with allergies. I'm on a similar med regime with only partial relief. Add to that, I have asthma too, so I'm ready for things to change.

I know it seems odd, but try adding a Zantac 150 to your regular allergy meds. It's an H2 inhibitor and helps your regular meds (the H1 inhibitor) work better.
That's what I have to do for chronic hives and it knocks out my nasal allergies too.

MergeLeft my sister is on Zantac for allergies too! I take Zantac fairly regularly anyway (at least a few times a week), but maybe I'll just make it a part of the daily routine. Thanks!

I'm also on Zyrtec, Flonase, and Singular. And I've added Mucinex D for the past three weeks. My allergies are nuts right now. I use a Neil Med sinus rinse twice daily and shower before bed as well. I have allergies year round, but still pray for winter because it is better. But by March 1, I'm in defense mode again. Go back to your doctor if this is unusual for you. You may need a steroid to know out a reaction.

Boy, the things one can learn from peas! DH has chronic hives and takes Zyrtec daily. Would he need Zantac during a flare, or daily use? He hates taking meds, but knows how bad his allergies are without them.

So what is it in the summer that's worse? I realize that may depend on where you live.....DH and I and all 3 kids get seasonal allergies, but youngest DD has had a runny nose for about two weeks now. Doing Claritin in the AM and Zyrtec at night and occasional Benadryl if she's really snotty.

Do you get shots? That's really the only thing helping me to get long term relief.

No I don't get shots. That actually hasn't even been offered as treatment yet. I may ask next time I go in. I was weeding flower beds last night and got some pollen from some lilies on my upper arms. It actually started stinging and burning! I did take a shower before bed last night and I slept great and didn't itch or get stuffed up.

He hates taking meds, but knows how bad his allergies are without them. My understanding is that all allergy meds are most effective when taken daily ... that would include the Zantac. I'm not a doctor, though. He should check with his doctor to be sure this med combo is OK for him.

He does take meds daily, but he had a hive situation during the winter that has not quite resolved. Dermatologist and PCP seem to think it is no big deal.
