Our almost 17-year old cat has been diagnosed with hyperthyroid and we have been giving him pills 2x per day for two weeks.
It will be ongoing.
What a battle but we tell him it's because we love him.
He's a little under nine pounds now so need to get a few pounds on him.
I gave him a can of tuna in water today and he ate it all!
Also went out and got a variety of canned kitten food. He ate about 1/2 of a small can of it. Kitten food has more calories than regular cat food and online it says that it is fine to give it to him.
This is in addition to his dry food that he can have anytime and a can of food in the morning. But these are between three cats so it's hard to tell how much he is eating.
What "people food" does your cat love that he can have a lot of?
I'm going to get sardines also. If you give yours tuna, is it in water or oil?
All of our cats love shrimp but they don't have many calories.
Any other ideas are appreciated!!

Some cats like the meat baby foods. Gerber makes chicken, turkey, beef and ham.

Some cats like the meat baby foods. Gerber makes chicken, turkey, beef and ham. Yep, just make sure it is meat only, no garlic or onion. We put our cat’s thyroid pill in a ball of cream cheese and have his soft food ready to put under his mouth as soon as he takes the cream cheese. So far, so good. We give our cats chicken liver cat food and they all scarf it like they have never seen food before. It is the only thing I have ever found that all 5 cats like. It is by Castor and Pollux, might want to give it a try. I don’t know if it will help gain a ton of weight, but our vet wants our cat to eat 1.5 cans of wet food a day, and he is about 9 pounds.

I usually give my cats tuna in water, but drain the water. Only for a treat though. Why people food? to fatten him up? how about just increasing the amt of times you feed him? I would also feed him separate from the others, to make sure he gets his fair share.

My cat loves kraft American singles. We just give him a teeny corner piece, but he goes nuts over it. I would imagine it would help put some weight on yours. I read that the dry kibble is more calories than wet cat food.

Did your vet give you any advice about feeding your cat for weight gain?

Kitten food is great, and there are foods that are higher in calories such as the fancy ones made with duck. Tuna in oil helps, and pieces of a McDs 1/4 lb cheeseburger were really a huge hit with my old man cat when calories were important.

Did your vet give you any advice about feeding your cat for weight gain? I'd definitely ask your vet, especially since older cats can be prone to specific health problems. I'd hate for you to inadvertently cause a different health issue trying to address the weight loss.

I gave him a can of tuna in water today and he ate it all! That's not a great idea and not going to help with weight gain. Tuna is too lean, and too low in calories to be of any help in gaining weight. Olive oil is also not great for cats and I'd avoid giving that regularly. Secondly because it smells so strongly cats can start to like it too much and refuse to eat anything else, this can lead to a serious life threatening conditions called steatitis (yellow fat disease). I'd go with just feeding more regularly, as you already are using kitten food or pick from this list of highest calorie cat foods

One of my cats hasn't shown interest in any people food other than tuna. My other cat will try almost anything. He comes running every day when I have a banana - loves them! He also loves Chinese pork (like pork & seeds) and chicken sandwich meat.

My oldie loved Mac n cheese, which not real healthy but at 20 anything goes! She was down around 4 pounds, just skin and bones (thyroid fine, bum kidneys and just very old) so towards the end I was feeding her 4-5 cans of fancy feast a day. It’s all she would eat for years so I just fed her as often as I could.
To tempt cats to eat I have used sardines, meat baby food, cheese, canned mackerel, and dog food of all things. Not a complete diet but for a cat who won’t eat to get them inter stead they worked.

mine loves yogurt. She begs for it anytime some is opened.
But like others have said, I would continue to use kitten food and other cat food and just feed several times a day. Perhaps put the fella in the bathroom with his food for a while to give him stress free time to eat without the other cats bothering him.
