Just got back yesterday from our Democratic Convention in Dallas. WOW! I was only going as an alternate but we had a few people drop out and when I showed up for the district caucus I got elevated to full delegate. Less than two hours later I was elected to represent SD31 on the State Democratic Executive Committee for a term of four years. I'm *very* excited to be able to represent the democrats of west Texas at the state level. My phone is already filling with contacts from across our district.
I attended the womens caucus and got to hear both Wendy Davis and Leticia Van de Putte speak at that. They are both two tough Texas women who have what it takes to move this state forward in a way that's good for every Texan. Two of the women in my delegation had the chance to hang out with Leticia at the hotel bar at the state women's convention. They sat and jawed for over two hours, just women talking, and they say not voting for her is crazy pants. Van de Putte is very impressive and she is the real deal - a politician who really is in it to make things better for everyone instead of being someone who's in for her own personal glory.
I also had the chance to attend the NARAL Pro-Choice Caucus and things are really grim for Texas women. After September, there will be only six clinics left in the entire state. Women in my area will have to travel to either San Antonio or Dallas for services, even just to have the pills dispensed for a medical abortion. With all the other restrictions in place, it can take three weeks from start to finish and cost up to $4000. Women are already being harmed by illegal procedures and by FSM only knows what kind of medication they are ordering from Mexico. This law is ALREADY killing women. A right you can't afford to exercise or can't afford to travel to where you can exercise it is not a right at all. We thought we won this battle in 1972 but we have lost it again and need to fight to get it back.
It was a real whirlwind for me personally but beyond that, I was delighted to see us focused, energetic, and determined. If you are Texas Blue, please do what you can. It is possible but it's going to take absolutely all the energy and focus we can muster. Even volunteering one time - one block walk, one phone bank, one voter registration drive - that can make a difference. If you don't know who to contact, message me and I'll get you in touch with either your party chair or the Battleground Texas fellow in your area.
