My friends said that they got an email that you can pay your age in your (child's) birthday month too. I assume once. But apparently a lot of people didn't get that memo!

We live in the DC area with the largest outlet mall (either in the state or the States--not sure.) Evidently by 9am the line was down the mall, through the food court, and out the door--twice (looped around). Yikes! That's probably a half mile. Lots of comments on FB about entitled brats and how this isn't going to ruin their summer, and people countering with disappointed children and how unfair it all is. And of course, how they could have done it better.
Really, the bears aren't what breaks the bank. It's the clothes and accessories. Yikes! When my kids were little, someone gave them gift cards to BAB. They bought one animal, then accessorized it to the hilt on subsequent visits. I wasn't a big fan of stuffed animals and really limited them in our house.

I'm 43. I really think that's a lot for a bear. Yes, but if you're the mother of a preschooler and can get a build a bear for $4 or $5 it's a bargain. According to USA Today the lines have been shut down. link Apparently no one thought this through very well. <iframe width="18.039999999999964" height="3.0400000000000063" style="position: absolute; width: 18.039999999999964px; height: 3.0400000000000063px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_54233826" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="18.039999999999964" height="3.0400000000000063" style="position: absolute; width: 18.04px; height: 3.04px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 847px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_92167446" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="18.039999999999964" height="3.0400000000000063" style="position: absolute; width: 18.04px; height: 3.04px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 92px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_18503942" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="18.039999999999964" height="3.0400000000000063" style="position: absolute; width: 18.04px; height: 3.04px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 847px; top: 92px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_59387795" scrolling="no"></iframe> Yes I’ve already had the heart attack when I said to my kid “we need to thin out your stuffies” And the BABs are in the Goodwill pile “Oh not Those!” But yeah I don’t think I’d wait in line for one

Oh goodness, no. A friend asked me to go but the LAST thing I need around here is anymore stuffed animals! Those things seem to multiply during the night. They'd have to pay ME to come and get one! My girls got their first BAB when we were in the US on holidays. The packed them in their boxes as carry on. At customs the agent asked what we purchased I named a few things and said build a bears, his grouchy reply was "yes, because all kids need more teddy bears". I think he had bear troubles in his house 😁

The comments on Facebook are nuts. My favorite was something like: I can't afford these expensive bears without this promo. You ruined my 3 year-olds day after we waited in line for 4 hours. I will never be back."
All I could think was 4 hours in a line even with the best at the end would ruin most people's days. And if you couldn't afford the best with out the promo and the $15 off isn't enough, were you really ever going to go back.

Interestingly we were at the Mall of America the other day (we live close, but rarely go - only went for DD to get something at the Ivivva store) - and we noticed they are soon to open the "Build a Bear Bakery" - unclear on the concept, but it appears they are still trying to save their business.

The Facebook comments on the Build-A-Bear page are amazing. I'm just saying, if you're here for the drama - go there. ![](https://i.imgur.com/gKMeJwD.jpg) This was just one that popped on my screen after about 4 seconds of scrolling, not even necessarily a highlight. So much to unpack here. WHERE do you keep the 300 bears? Do tell more about your plans to call ALL THE GOVERNMENTS. Just so many things. Right. Because the challenged were the only ones turned away. They are just out to get them, and ruin their day! ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/G0Qxztyjs53n1ic_fEBG.jpg) I sure hope the governments can make them feel better!

Maybe it's something like American Girl where you would take your bear with you as an experience?

As I read these FB comments (pure awesomeness, btw) I can't help but wonder if some of these people might have a point. Stay with me for a minute.....the complaining is absurd, sure, but the sale deal said (I assume, i never heard about till after it was done) "while supplies last", it sounds like they had plenty of supply they just lacked crowd control, so they didn't meet their end of the deal and the $15 off 1 is nowhere near what today's deal was. Regardless, I think they're gonna have one hell of a PR mess to clean up after this and if they're already in trouble, that's not good ![:-/](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/undecided.png)

The cut off for the maximum price was $29. That's what I thought I heard on the news. I'm so glad my kids are out of the Build a Bear and AG stage. We have enough stuffed animals around here. The news showed the lines forming at 7am already in the parking lot. We're staying far from the mall today. Hope all of who brave the crowds get your bears!

I predicted this when I saw the announcement for the sale. Did they really not think this would happen? I am wondering if it was a ploy for parents to just come back for full price.

I was just watching the local news. They interviewed one woman who said they went to one location, found a huge line, then tried going to another location. Now, it really wouldn’t occur to her that ANY location is going to be a mess?
I don’t have kids...what is the average cost of a BAB? Is it THAT much of a savings? The whole thing had recipe for disaster written all over it. As a parent, why would you even think it would be a good idea? Waiting in a long line with an inpatient child? Ugh.

I saw that on our local news earlier today--I'm so happy we were at the mall with the BAB yesterday so we didn't have to deal with that mess! My boys both did one bear there when they were young and that's all they ever needed...300??? seriously?

I was just watching an update as well. They interviewed a woman who got in line at 9:30 am and was still waiting at 4pm. The newscaster said the line went was the length of two football fields. But the kids looked so happy so it was all worth it. One family got two dinosaurs for $6! I'd be thrilled too! ETA: I guess I was wrong about my kids outgrowing the BAB craze. My teen just asked if we could go get a bear. Uh no. Go play with that bear that's been gathering dust in your room.

The kids they showed were all smiles because most of them had never had a Build a Bear before. I get it. I've stood in plenty of lines like that with a scowl on my face, only to have my heart melt at the sight of kids who were just thrilled over a free Lego mini kit or a "limited edition AG outfit free with purchase today only." The kids who who got the $6 dinosaurs were 2 and 4. I thought it was only the basic bears that were on sale. I didn't realize the specialty bears were also included. The Disney edition bear we got years ago were so expensive. I would have loved to have paid my DD's age instead. It would only have been $7! Lots of smiling kids on tv... and on parents. Made me smile too. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) .

My granddaughter and I took my great grandsons. We got there about 8:30. BAB opened at 9:00, today. We stood in line for about 4 hours. Everyone was in a good mood and seemed to be having a good time. We took turns shopping, walking around and sitting so it honestly didn't seem like we were there that long.
She got both boys specialty animals, a large Chewbacca and something from Pokémon, that were $35 regular price. They had lots of "bears" already stuffed if you didn't want to stand in line for the stuffer, so that's what we got.
The 3yo was so well behaved that several people commented on how good he was!

I'm trying to wrap my brain around having 300 of them. As a mom of a kid with autism who has a thing for stuffed animals and has at least 150 stuffed animals and still wants a new one every week even though he turns 17 in 3 weeks, I can totally see this. Believe me, we hoped he would outgrow the stuffed animal phase years ago, but at 6’2” he still brings at least one with him everywhere we go. If you don’t have a child with autism, there are probably a lot of things about our lives you couldn’t wrap your head around. We only have about 12 Build-A-Bear ones though and they are ones like the characters from Trolls, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Spongebob, etc. eta: I don’t support the Mom’s tantrum at all; I am just saying that I don’t doubt the 300 if she has more than one child on the spectrum. Ask me about the weeklong tantrums we had in my House because my son saw on the Internet that SOME Jellystone Campgrounds have a build-a-bear type machine in their gift shop where you can stuff a Yogi Bear and he wanted us to drive 4 hours to the nearest campground with one just to buy the damn Bear.

Thank you for your answer. That totally makes sense. I figured it was because of the autism that they had acquired so many. I was thinking more along the lines of trying to find a place for 300 and keeping track of them and having to buy a new one that's a little different than the others. I should have made my thoughts clearer. I apologize if I came across as insensitive.

I had three friends who went (not together.) One went to the first store at 8 a.m. and there was already a four hour line so she went to a second store and the lines were closed by then. Another went to yet a different store and stood out in the heat for six hours. Once they got inside there was then an hour wait to stuff their bears so they paid for them and will go back on Saturday to stuff them. My third friend took her grandkids to yet another store. She got there at 7 a.m. and was out with all the bears by 10 a.m.
Whew! Made for interesting Facebook conversation!
