When I was in high school every year or so, two random male missionaries in white shirts, black pants, black tie would knock on our front door. They were there to convert us. My parents would try to have a discussion about one topic or another. The missionaries seemed to be well versed in the “dirty laundry” of our religion, which I now know is present in EVERY religion. So these teenagers (not much older than I at the time) seemed to be trying to convince my parents to change religions based on things that one of the popes might have done in the Middle Ages, for instance. Over the years my parents just politely turned them away. When we eventually moved from that house my dad was touching up the paint on the exterior of our house. He noticed little crosses near our doorbell that were pencil drawn. My dad was pretty sure they were some sort of code left for the next visit of missionaries.
Over the years we’ve had neighbors who happened to be Mormon. Early on I really knew nothing about that religion other than my parents’ experiences. These neighbors were all lovely and we became friends. However, we had to come to an agreement not to discuss religion. And as friends go, I knew it was just a surface friendship. To be a true friend we’d have to be Mormon.
The more I learn the more see how far fetched religions can be—this one in particular. I do believe in God and do think it’s a faith thing. But I think the message is pretty basic—the golden rule:treat others as you wish to be treated.

from the bit of Wikipedia research I did, there's a LOT that's not explained... the mention of horses, cattle, sheep, swine, etc. in the Book of Mormon, for one. Especially since NONE of those animals made it to the New World until AFTER Columbus. And that doesn't fit their timeline, at ALL. But hey, faith, right?? lol. I watched a video about this and one of the excuses made regarding things that didn't exist in the time the book was supposedly to take place was that during the translations of the book, the 'divine interpreter' or whatever added things (like animals, materials, etc) in place of the 'correct' words to make them relatable and easier to understand for the people of present day reading the book. Basically, the argument would be like changing some sort of community gathering to something like a night club, a party, a bar, etc that would relate to that generation of followers.
I find it to be absolute bull, but it is one way of convincing people the book isn't a lie.
It's the same in christianity with things like teaching people that bad things that happen to non believers are their punishment for not believing (or for believing in the 'wrong god') and trials that happen to them as believers are tests of their faith. They literally ingrain in people these both side arguments to explain away any valid critiques of religion and I'm sure every religion does it...give an excuse to explain away anything that looks and smells like bullshit and the sheep eat it up. It's what the church wants because it keeps them brainwashed and tithing!!
Religion is the biggest MLM scam there ever was!!

Oh good Lord. Does she believe this crap?! Do you remember how long people had said "Get a personal account. Stop spouting your personal LDS stuff all over your company account. Stop navel-gazing all over your company account. etc" But Becky "I'll run my company into the ground if I feel like it" Higgins wouldn't hear it. That's why that quote was so hysterical today.

So an anti-government and religious entrepreneur? Ah yes, Becky's flavour. They recorded this podcast episode in person in Hawaii (and without masks, duh). Get some of those trip expenses deducted for professional reasons? Ah yes, Becky's flavour.

I follow all of Becky's IG accounts but I may have to drop all of them. I don't like or comment on her posts, but she's gone so hard on the religion/faith posts that my IG feed is crammed packed with ads from all sorts of LDS-related accounts and businesses. I've been busy hiding posts, adding new subjects and accounts to my feed to counteract the cult programming. I'd rather have a missionary knock on my door!

Seriously so done with her. I think some people post what THEY need and it seems obvious that she’s struggling with something—her faith? her identity? I think she’s a control person and one finds out sooner or later that there’s much that we cannot control. It irritates me when she says stuff like WATCH THIS! GO HERE!! etc. Girl—don’t order people around! But then she wants “grace” to have a tech break or whatever and admonishes her followers for spending so much time online.

Molly ohffs Are you both like the same person or what? Just wondering since you both have newer accounts and you both only post on this thread. You should join in on others threads as there are lots of others to participate in.

Nope, we are completely different people. I don't paper scrap anymore, strictly digital, so not really interested in the other threads. It was the delays with the PL app that inspired me to come looking for conversation.

My GenZ (edited) DD refers to religions as fandoms. I think it's a good comparison actually.

Mormonday! Since we'd been discussing the Mormon faith in this thread (Becky's personal IG is fiiiilled with religious posts so we're definitely not off topic), I wanted to share this little video. Until 8 years ago, I had no clue there were multiple Mormon Churches claiming to be the true followers of Joseph Smith's teachings. It's not just your classic LDS and FLDS... The more, the merrier, right?

having young people isolated and drilled in all the ins and outs of trying to justify their religion to non-believers is hugely beneficial, some would call education, some brain washing. Basically if you can survive endless weeks of "selling" your faith to heathens and come out the other side you are going to be thoroughly indoctrinated! You will either be completely in or on the way to being out if you survive a mission. I remember the interview that was done with 2 Mormon missionaries last year who were still serving and who'd come to realise they didn't believe, going through major questioning of the faith and the Church, while serving. Poor guys were still trapped and then Covid-19 hit. There are fascinating ex-Mormon missionary tales out there. Those who ended up having their first homosexual relationship with their missionary roommate while serving, those who started planning their way out of the Church (and out of their family to a certain extent) while on mission, etc. For many, however, they come home and start studying + planning their wedding. Being away for so long with limited communication, you're deprived of that feeling of home, of everyday family support. You're ripped apart from everything you've known and the bounce-back effect is usually a great contributor to returning missionaries settling very early in life. For anyone interested in the serving LDS missionaries who realised they didn't believe while out in the field during the pandemic, here's the episode with the two elders. Interview segment starts at 56:20. There's missionaries on the ex Mormon reddit forum who go there for advice.

It was the delays with the PL app that inspired me to come looking for conversation. Agree. Two separate people. I’m mostly digital but do a bit of paper scrapping. I have enough stuff to last the rest of my life! I still see BH in my IG feed because I’m too lazy to unfollow. I’m just wondering who follows her for real info or “guidance”. I find her so off-putting and am amazed that she sells anything at all except perhaps religion. Thank goodness she seems to have stopped selling dresses, jewelry, etc. I don’t understand the appeal of the notebooks. Her sweaty hikes seem like bragging sessions. It’s disturbing that she seems oblivious the the global pandemic. But, I will check out other topics here. Thanks for the suggestion.

None of them will ever explain their actions or be straight with us. They have a Mormon code of silence.

People take new jobs and quit old jobs everyday. BH has basically shut down her PL business so there probably wasn't much for Kari to do.

It's normal to be curious, particularly witnessing the fall of Project Life and its main actors leaving BH HQ. Kari was the marketing director for AC Digitals under BH. That's a pretty big gap to fill. Either BH takes it on herself or the contract with AC is up and AC plans to migrate AC Digitals elsewhere. I'm actually intrigued by this aspect of the change.

None of them will ever explain their actions or be straight with us. They have a Mormon code of silence. I don't think that is it, possibly a non disclosure agreement? There's secrecy about the temple ceremonies, but I'm not aware of other codes of Mormon silence.
I want to point out the absurdity of the Bible; virgin birth, feeding thousands with little food, Noah's ark, raising from the dead, a perfect man....
Then along comes a religion that says yeah that stuff is true, BUT these scriptures are ANOTHER Testament of Jesus Christ. That's how you get believers. If you believe the Bible stuff, not a far leap to say, hey this could be true.
