“I saw on Design Mom's Twitter that the LDS prophet asked women to fast social media for ten days. She's upset about it (understandably so) and being snarky to women who comment in support of it. However, I bet the Tazas of the world go along with the word of the prophet, so do you all think it's going be a slow ten days in social media since so many prominent bloggers are Mormon?” A PROPHET has told them to do this guys. It's not "a" prophet, it's the Prophet AKA the President of the Church of LDS AKA the oldest guy in the Quorum of Twelve Apostles (an elite club of elders) who takes over leadership of the Church when the previous Prophet dies. There is always a lot of gossip when a new guy gets voted into that little club of men waiting for the current Prophet/President to die so they might take over someday because of the birth dates/likeliness or unlikeliness the new member could one day rule the Church (it's almost a given the one non-white fella never will).
The Mormons just went through their bi-annual General Conference (it's a whole weekend of LDS men speaking). I'm guessing the Prophet/President might have ordered the social media detox during said GC (and women get a separate session! I kid you not, there's a women's session and then an all members' session #patriarchy #youarealiveandwell).
Anyhoo, I listen to too many atheist podcasts run by ex-Mormons.

A PROPHET has told them to do this guys. Is this "PROPHET" that 94 year old dude that just published an article stating that if us Non-Mormon's don't use the new long full title that it's a victory for Satan-
Probably wants those women off social media so he can have it all to himself so he can preach to us who do not worship all these new name changing laws that we all need to remember or we are giving a victory to Satan. I don't think he's a prophet. I think he's watched to much Harry Potter. "Say the new name church don't speak the nickname, if you do a snake will eat you!"

In today's political climate, it should be no surprise that an angry old white man thinks he can try to successfully control people who think religion in general is full of shit. Gotta get in on that Trump white male pedestal while its fresh and hot, I guess.

Just curious. Does that apply to men as welll? Nope! AND All women are mothers, whether you've ever had children or not. It's okay to refer to all women as mothers.
Actually, the way it traditionally worked was every Saturday, there was an evening session just for young men and men (12 years and older). Now, they are doing a switch where it's an every other year thing with men and women. There was also a Relief Society broadcast (women) before conference as well. I think that was the week before? I can't remember.
In case you missed this tidbit, "He also seeks to confuse gender, to distort marriage, and to discourage childbearing—especially by parents who will raise children in truth," Oaks said. His gay grandson is the music director of Ballet West in Salt Lake City.
BUT!!! Two hour church is official and 12 new temples!

I love the project life app, but I am getting tired of being preached to by her on Social Media. There seems to be a disconnect from her customers that are not LDS. Maybe I will "unfollow" her.

For the record, President Nelson, our prophet, did NOT order anyone to do anything. He asked the sisters to consider avoiding social media and other media that have a negative influence, for a period of ten days, and compare how we felt during that time. It was one of 4 challenges, but there was nothing mandatory about it or any of the challenges he asked us to consider accepting. Some have interpreted that to mean no social media at all.
The way I understood it was to avoid NEGATIVE media. This thread certainly seems to qualify for the negative part, but I did feel that clarification was in order, since there seemed to be some misunderstanding. Freedom to choose is important in our church. No one is ordered to do anything. I've been a member a long time. I have never been given an order by any leader. Ever. And yes, I have turned down requests that I did not feel that I could do. I was not penalized in any way, nor was I shunned or ridiculed or made to feel guilty at all.

That is really good to hear, scrapnnana . It's not the experience of all Mormons, however. Reddit is full of examples of people being shamed or guilted into following the "suggestions" of the leaders on all manner from tithing to what to wear on Sundays. Just look at how Becky herself referenced it. The post picture showcases the word "obedience" and the words are full of an....I wanted to do this...but I felt overruled and did that....language. Also, it's interesting that this suggestion came up at the women's session, not the general session where it would have been read as more gender neutral a suggstion

Avoiding social media to reflect on your personal path is not a bad idea. But the way *some Mormon women explain it, like being obedient to the church leaders, sounds off putting. Sometimes I think they misinterpret the message just as much as us non Mormon people do.

Is it just me, or does anyone else feel worse about themselves when they follow people like this? It's like they are the perfect mommy bloggers of the podcast world.
I was tearing up an old Allure magazines this week for my collage art. I came across this article about Mormon Mommy bloggers. Wow! That was an interesting read. There are references to why the Mommy bloggers and scrapbooking in this article. Also they have more plastic surgeons per capita than LA. It was a really interesting read. I found the online version for everyone- www.allure.com/story/why-so-many-beauty-bloggers-are-mormon.
After reading it I thought it explained a lot about our own stars.
Does it make me feel worse? No, because they are not perfect Mom's. I am not saying they are not good Mom's. It is a projected image and nobody can keep that up for long without crashing. See- Hollywood starlets and their tragic falls.
Note- I know the Mormon church is publishing articles letting us all know we are not to say Mormon's or LDS and we are suppose to use Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. There is no way I am writing down that long title every time we discuss this religion as a business.
What an interesting read. I have to admit that it was oddly reassuring to learn that plastic surgery is prevalent...I fall right in the SAHM mommy blogger age bracket, and my post baby look could best be described as frumpy and squishy! 😂

When you live in a state that has three times the national suicide rate, LGBTQ people are told they are confused by Satan, children of gay parents are told they have to disavow their parents lifestyle, agree to never live with them once they are of age, and are not allowed to participate or receive any ordinances until they are eighteen, you respond in angry sarcasm. There's many more issues.
ETA: To make matters more confusing, a bishop can decide if those children may or may not receive blessings and ordinances. It varies from one congregation to another.

scrapnnana Thank you for the clarification. I follow a frugality blog and she is still posting. She is very devout. She also teaches Provident Living classes so those are the majority of her posts. Of course I don't do Provident Living classes but I enjoy reading all the frugality links she shares. She was posting away last Monday. It does make you all think that Becky said she is taking a ten day break. The message was to avoid negative media. It makes you wonder if she is considering her social media presence as negative. Not being snarky. She does use her religion to promote her business. It is her brand. refugeepea You have my back on your posts. My brother was gay. He died of AIDS in the early 90's. He's my half-brother from my Mother's first marriage. She was married to one of the bigwig Mormon's at the time. When my brother died her ex would not bury him or claim the body. My Mother also would not because he was gay and died of AIDS. He died alone and scared. My beautiful sister was mentally handicapped and had terrible seizures. Because she did not fit what this Mormon man's idea of a perfect child was he and my Mother left my sixteen year old sister die in a mental hospital. When I went to the funeral my brother (Who was still alive then) I was not allowed to touch him because he was dirty. I hugged him anyway and then I became dirty. I also would like to add that this bigwig Mormon who is deeply respected molested my Sister. My DH's brother was chosen a wife and force to marry because he was gay from his Mormon grandparents. I know there is a seedy side to all religions. I know not all Mormon's are like this. I have dear friends who are Mormon's and horrified and have a deep hatred of my Mom and her ex. I know I come across as hard on Mormon's, especially over here. I really don't mean too. As you can see I do have a very deep hurt and distrust of this religion. Becky's "Cultivate the Perfect Life" is seriously negative social media. Like I said I read a Mormon frugality blog. Love her to pieces and she might be part of this community. She taught me how to dehydrate food better and stock my pantry in a more efficient way. Now, I think that is cultivating the perfect life. This ladies blog I read she is like come to my home I will teach you to crochet and we can have snacks. Becky is like buy my dress, my journals, my wrapping paper, my recipe cards, my etc, etc, etc.... A lot of you know I just have the biggest pet peeve of people using their religion to profit, lol.

The social media detox was discussed by the ex-Mormon hosts of a podcast I follow. They rightfully pointed out that the new direction the Church is going in with the new leader is definitely regressive, not progressive (despite cutting down Sunday service to 2h instead of 3). They were just appalled that this was, again, something for women to follow, not men, and in the middle of the Internet and social media-powered #MeToo climate where Mormon women are stepping up about sexual harassment in the Church (and the men go unpunished).
Anyhoo, I don't want to get too political on this side of the board but it does seem like the more famous female LDS influencers are feeling the social pressure to follow the detox despite it not being ordered. That, in itself, says a lot.
It'll be interesting to see how Becky slides back into her hyperactive social media persona when the detox ends. Are we making predictions? Newsletter, blog post(s), IG stories? Place your bets.
Heidi Swapp doesn't appear to be following the detox diet.

I can't quite figure out how AC shares their community manager amongst the brands (Pink Paislee, Pebbles, Crate Paper, etc. clearly all share the same social media approach but not Becky Higgins, Heidi Swapp and Shimelle). It seems like this is likely a matter of whether the brand is fronted by a person or had social media presence before falling under the AC umbrella (1Canoe2).
Heidi has continued to post photos of her son returning from his mission, a family vacation to celebrate the event, Halloween costumes with friends, etc. while Becky was social media-fasting (but still sending newsletters because erm... a girl's gotta stay in touch uninterrupted after all?). They seem to have followed different paths on this matter.

I could be wrong but I was under the impression that HS's brand was owned by AC (hence her relocating when the acquisition happened...until then, she lived somewhere in the mid west US, not Utah) while Project Life is partnered with AC, making AC the manufacturer of PL products, but not the owner of the brand.

Someone on another message board wondered why so many Mormon women were saying things to the effect of "I'm following the prophet/elder/President and doing this fast, but don't worry, cuz I'm going to take tons of pictures/notes and catch you all up when I come back." Um. OK. Not sure how that's different than just posting every day (or 7 times/day). I think the idea was to let social media GO for a while - think of other things. Not to keep thinking about it and how to "catch your followers up" when you get back.
