And just a little memory lane stuff: goo.gl/images/TLV6CUThis magazine was the one in my mailbox in June 2003 when I came home from vacation and found out I was pregnant with my youngest. Seeing it in my google search evoked so many memories

well, I posted my reply in the wrong thread, lol! serves me right for not reading carefully! (I'm going to cut/paste the entire thing here... I'll be back!) ETA: copied from the Becky Higgins photo class thread: sleepingbooty , the Becky Higgins sketch was a column in the SB magazine Creating Keepsakes. Every month she'd make a layout and the column would show her layout, the layout sketch, and other ways to change it up for more / less photos, adapt it to 1-page, to 8.5 x 11, etc. This pin: CK Sketches March/April 2010 is one example of her sketches from an issue of the magazine. You might even still be able to find them on the creatingkeepsakes website, if you search for them. The 'sketch' concept got wildly popular, and the publisher even issued two (? I think) special magazine issues that were all about using sketches for creating your SB pages. Here;s the first one, on Amazon (she looks so YOUNG in the cover photo!): Creative Sketches for Scrapbooking Becky also published two books called My Creative Companion and My Creative Companion 2, full of ideas about how to make borders, how to use tags, how to use ribbon, fibers, etc. on your pages. (think of them sort of as a 'pinterest board' compilation of ideas, but in ring-bound form, lol.) HERE is a Google Books preview of the inside of My Creative Companion- it really looks pretty cheesy now, actually- lol. (and wow- it looks like it might be the actual entire book? or if not, it's quite a LOT of the inside pages. I take it back- it looks like the preview is 40 out of 200 total pages.) Becky was soooo popular for both of those things back then; I remember taking a class on scrapping with sketches from her at a CK convention, probably 10-12 years ago, now?? And back then, everyone just HAD to have the Creative Companion book... I still see it every once in a while at the used bookstores around here, and until a few years ago, I also still had one of the special-issue sketch magazines. These things were before she came up with the PL concept (which, as people have said, wasn't exactly her idea exclusively- a different company had previously made pocketed page protectors for 'quicker' scrapping; IIRC, they really didn't get very popular.)

BH was my inspiration as a new scrapper back in the early 2000s - I loved her sketches in CK and the sketch books as they came out - I still use the sketch books today. Her linear style was a good match for my scrapbooking.
I remember reading an article she wrote about sorting photos and that's when I went through all my printed photos (pre-digital for me) and sorted them by decade and then year and then month and then into events.
Perhaps I'm behind the times (there's really no perhaps about it, I am) but I think BH was the biggest influence on my scraping style and continues to be (not her now, but her back then) - I've changed my papers and manufacturers and left eyelets behind and added PL cards and so on but the core of my style is still influenced by her sketches.
But it's been a long time since I've found her new content inspiring....I never jumped on the PL bandwagon or pocket pages and I don't want to go digital - I like paper and stickers, lol - and I don't need wrapping paper or iphone photography lessons (I don't have a phone) or a new dress (well - I might need a new dress but not that one, lol)

I remember when Becky first came out with Project 365, which was the precurser to Project Life. It was a kit that Becky created for Creating Keepsakes. The demand was so huge that the Creating Keepsakes website crashed and the phone lines were jammed. It was a huge PR nightmare for CK and it seemed like CK threw Becky under the bus. I was a newcomer to the CK forum at the time and I was drawn in by the drama. I have to say that at the time I was impressed with how Becky handled the fallout. She was very apologetic and communicated status updates at a time when CK went silent. She formed her own company to offer the product that was so in demand and renamed it Project Life. Somewhere along the line she lost her customer focus and business sense.

Looking at those pages of Becky’s embellishments and I find them actually very useful. Sure, the primitive country style is dated but I’ve always been a fan of that style and I could see myself using a lot of those ideas now. Also, with as much stash as I have, I can do those things myself. Part of what I miss is the DIY aspect of scrapbooking. We get so caught up in FOMO for manufactured product that we forget we are creative people. We don’t need to buy a lot of the product we use. We have the means to make it ourselves.

here is the video: Becky's story (sort of) That video was great and thanks for that. Tying in the thread about redoing pages, even Becky's earliest pages were thoughtfully put together. My early stuff was similar but horrible. I also started out 8.5x11 3 ring binders but I didn't know about her at the time (in the '90's). Still even now I think my style and hers are similar. But I never followed her even when I got the magazine. I just looked at the layouts and products. I thought it was 'unusual' that she walked in to a new scrapbook store and asked to teach classes. How did she know what and how to teach if that was basically her first exposure to scrapbooking? Just curious.

My experience with BH is way different than what some of you describe. First was a class at CKU in Orlando. Took ten classes and hers was embarrassingly the worst...truly...it was lame. Her power point presentation had layouts that at first I thought were unfinished or examples of what not to do...they were awful. No...she was proud of them. Next was a class at the CK convention in Mesa. Duh...one technique...that was all...fold the corner of your card stock over about two inches and tack it down with a brad...that was it. After that waste of time, I was convinced she was only there because of her connection with Lisa B. and certainly not because of any demonstrated talent.

Just one more thought...I have never considered Project Life actual scrapbooking. I love creative, lumpy pages. PL for me is simply the modern version of the old magnetic photo albums of yesteryear. Works for some but for me, I would have lost interest in scrapbooking years ago if I was doing PL. I still tell my friends that scrapbooking is the most creative hobby I have done...and I have dabbled in just about every craft and sewing thing that comes out.

I think this was the exact same class I took! I don't think I even ever finished the class layouts-- I probably dismantled them and used the cardstock, but that was all. And like you, for me, the 'idea' of PL just isn't what I want to get out of scrapbooking. I like the divided page protectors and find they come in handy along with my full-size ones, but I have NO interest at ALL in telling 'everyday' or 'real life' stories. (that's why I don't really 'get' Ali Edwards' style any more, either-- I don't 'tell stories' so much, I'm more of a photo-journalist style scrapper.) I tried 'PL' (in the manner BH describes) a sum total of ONCE, and made it through about 2 weeks of laundry, work commute and grocery shopping photos, etc. and then decided, "I am NEVER going to look back at this and think it's interesting." Nor will anyone else, since I don't have kids. (the dogs can't appreciate my scrapbook pages, lol) And, the way she promotes it as 'slide a card in a pocket and you're done!' is not what I want to get out of scrapbooking, either. For me, the cutting/pasting/designing aspect of scrapbooking is the fun part. I do agree that the DIY aspect of that era has been pushed aside somewhat by companies who mfr already-made embellishments, and that those ideas can still be useful today. But BH herself seems to have left scrapbooking behind. (and I know I'll end up watching it, but I really do NOT want to see her dancing with wrapping paper again, lol! )

What this thread is missing is the earth shattering contribution to future posterity that was made when Becky announced that she had learned a life hack from her physician husband that hydrogen peroxide gets out blood stains....
In all seriousness, I used to tear out Becky’s sketches and save them. I left scrapbooking around 2011 and it was Project Life that brought me back into it in 2013. I truly appreciate the contributions that she’s made to the craft but lately it’s been a train wreck and pretty distasteful to see the direction things are heading.

PL can totally be scrapbooking! You just don't want to listen to Becky's ideas on it because she tells the people who want to essentially create mini layouts in several pockets instead of one large page that they're doing it wrong because PL is 'supposed to be' a photo in one pocket and a card in another...who has time for embellishments these days!
