For those of you that had built in cabinets added-did you ever regret it? I’m looking to replace my current scrapbook storage furniture (already have a friend buying it all). I’ve had a local company come out to quote for built in cabinets, but now I’m concerned if we end up moving in a few years (with DH’s career that’s always an option) I would have to leave it all. I’m wondering if I should just replace with different free standing storage furniture that could be moved? Any thoughts?

I was able to put together three units from an unfinished wood furniture bstore and then had them custom painted to match. They look just like expensive built-ins, but they are free standing and I will be able to take them with me if I move. I was amazed at the variety of furniture that is available in various sizes to fit your space. You are able to customize it by choosing different door styles and moulding and either have if finished or painted. It was only about $3,000 to do an entire wall. You could probably get it much cheaper if you are handy and can paint it and install it yourself.

I know that some people have used cupboards from Home Depot that were returns or they ordered too many. You could take those with you.

I had my scrap room storage built by a kitchen cabinet maker. I love them!
A couple of things about them: they are 4 distinct modular with full backs. They could be removed if I have space in a new home. BUT they also make that little room look like a professional office, so I could see them being a selling feature of this home, so they may well stay where they are.

I have freestanding furniture in my craft room as it's pretty small but I do have built in furniture elsewhere in the house, including a bookcase and chest of drawers in a small guest room. I'm very happy with it but am not sure I'd bother doing built in furniture if I thought I might be moving in a few years.

That's a good point...it might be something that would make a house stand out if there's a hot market. I have bought/sold 7 homes so far in my life and none of them have had built ins that could have worked for my scrap space. I would have considered it a big plus for a home if I was considering buying it.

I would have considered it a big plus for a home if I was considering buying it. This was basically the thought process behind going this route in the first place-that it would add upgraded value to our loft space (it would also match all the existing cabinets in the house). We are meeting with the designer early in the week, and we are going to see all the options. Thanks for the input, Peas!

I did it and dropped $$$$$ on the project. I have no regrets, I love my space. The ONLY way I would even think about it is if I knew I was never going to move. We probably looked at close to a hundred houses before picking this one, not even kidding, so this is IT. We’re never moving again, unless it’s to a nursing home. If I would have seen a house built out like mine when we were looking, I seriously would have heard angels singing.
I will also say that on the flip side of the coin, having non-permanent furniture isn’t always the perfect answer either because what fits in one space may not fit in a new house the way you need it to.

I considered built-ins when we remodeled but didn't like the commitment. I feel like in our area most people don't have built-ins unless they are left over from the 70s. The space that is my office/scraproom is a second master on the first floor with ensuite. It is way more valuable as a bedroom than craft space.
We have a loft space for the kids with a good sized alcove for a desk area. We are still debating whether or not we should put in built-ins. Friends who added on a similar space said their kids never used the space.
For us the flexibility is more important.
My scrap desk is a wooden countertop from my old kitchen on top of jet max cubes.

I prefer free standing furniture to reconfigure my dedicated craft room when my work flow or storage needs change. Also, it allows me to create a craft space quickly after every move into new homes. There are endless scrapbook-specific & repurposed free standing & built in furniture options available. Hope you find the ideal furniture for your space!

I didn’t consider built in furniture because my scrap room may one day need to be repurposed into something else like a nursery. I like the flexibility of non-permanent furniture.

one thing to keep in mind with built-ins is that what looks great to you on paper (or seen in a youtube video or whatever) may not end up working great for you and then you're stuck with it forever.

![]() Yes, I have built in cabinets in my scrap space. Mostly, I love the counter top and the sink; the cabinets have only a little storage space since #1) sink (and pipes) and #2) fridge. But the counter is perfect for my Cameo, sewing machine, TV, two cubes with drawers for storing seldom used punches and thickers. I like my combination of built in and movable storage. In addition to my corner cabinets/counter tops, I have a sofa table (which houses my kits/collections, albums in progress, cardstock) and a square desk with two work areas. It's changed a little since this photo was taken; but overall, this is the set up. I have large french doors behind me on the left for lots of natural light. ![](https://farm1.staticflickr.com/916/43564137772_61f78f5c06_c.jpg)

I have not read the other replies, but I chose free standing storage for a few reasons:
1) It can be moved with me.
2) It can be rearranged and altered if I decide I need more of one type storage than I initially chose.
3) It was less expensive than built-in.
Also, if you sell your home later, having built-in storage will appeal to only some buyers. Others may want that room for other purposes, which could kill the sale.

All good points..but the last about selling the home won't matter a bit to me; I'll be dead. I built my house for ME, not the next buyer; this is why I don't have a bathtub in my master bath...another home selling killer!

I plan on using this space for the next 20 years, so I want it to work FOR ME. I doubt very much that the money I spent on it will ever come back to me in the form of more equity but TBH I really don’t care. It works for me now, I’m not planning on moving this stuff EVER again, and that’s all that matters.

I think I’ve had 9? different scrapbook rooms over the past 20 years, so I have figured out what storage does and does not work for me. Luckily, I’ve been able to reconfigure the furniture over the years, but DH doesn’t like “seeing” it all lol. We meet with the designer today, so I’ll post an update. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

I sincerely hope that I never again have to move or sell my house, but life is unpredictable, and the OP said they might need to move in a few years, so my answer was tailored to her.
My view of scrapbook room storage: Have it your way.

I have built ins and do not regret it. However, if we were ever to sell, I'm fairly certain I would take them with me, as I designed them and they are very specific to my needs.

I went to a discount cabinet place and just bought regular oak cabinets. Made sure they were all drawers and no door type so I could organize it better. Bought a counter top that is brown/black speckled so if paint and stuff gets on it you really wont notice. I had my dad put them in. It literally cost me about $1300. for cabinets and counter. It was put in over existing flooring so if I ever want to remove them I wont have to try & match the flooring. I absolutely love them! It is so professional looking.
