Ok, mild disagreement lol. So how do YOU make chili? Ground beef or chunks? Beans or no beans?
OK, JUST GREAT! Now, you and your DH are going to get the rest of the country (well, at least the Peas) into an argument too! LOLOLOL!
So, personally, I make my chili, like my Dad taught me … Ground beef, Tomatoes, Spices AND Beans! (Dad put CORN in his too, but I don't like that part, so I leave it out!)
I have found that people call "CHILI" anything with any variation or combination of a few key ingredients (in any order and in any quantity and in any combination or lack thereof!) ------ If it has any of these things in it in any combination with anything else, people will call it "CHILI"
chili powder, beans, ground beef, beef chunks, any meat really, tomatoes, any kind of spicy pepper or spicy pepper powder, cumin, cayenne pepper, any combo of chicken/turkey with beans qualifies and chili too.
LOLOLO!!!
So I guess in this case of your argument, YOU'RE BOTH RIGHT! Everyone wins! Yay!!!
That's my thought. I think we are both right, but he thinks HE is the only one who is right. Sigh. We are both stubborn and will argue this all day!

Ground beef, with beans.
My neighborhood has a chili cookoff every year and every year I'm amazed at all the different ways people have of preparing chili.

I'm from Illinois. I make chili with ground beef and beans (dark red kidney beans). I do know that other people don't use beans and some use beef chunks, and that's still chili. .......every.single.time. Beef and Beans and Cumin, otherwise to me it tastes like spaghetti sauce with beans!

Oklahoma raised (and back now) I make it with ground beef, beans, tomatoes and of course chili peppers.
Chili con carne (chili with meat) is chili peppers, beans and the addition of meat. Chili con frijoles (chili with beans) was chili pepper, meat and beans.
I'v known it ot have meat chunks (Texas father in law) and hamburger (Okie mom) IMO neither one is wrong but both will insist theirs is right.

I was raised in Michigan - ground beef and beans. I now live in Texas and most here like chili meat ( course ground beef ) and no beans. But truthfully, there are a lot of people who, like me, were not born here. So, you get a big variety of chilies here. 😊

I'm going to throw a wrench in the gears here and say that my favorite chili has shredded beef in it, usually brisket that's been smoked.
But for ease and speed, when I generally make chili, it's with ground beef and red beans.

We do not eat chili very often but we will use either types of meat. Preferably steak bites

The family LOVES my father in law’s recipe that he made up, it has ground beef and red kidney beans. I pick the beans out of my portion, not a bean eater. My personal favorite chili recipe is Rachael Ray’s Uptown Down-Home Chili recipe that i have made enough that i have tweaked for the family’s taste and simplification. I don't even like beer, but love it in this recipe. Sharon

We’ve never made chili with anything not ground. We use ground beef, turkey, or bison with beans and stewed tomatoes, as well as other things.

Ok, mild disagreement lol. Neither of us are big chili fans, but we're watching the Pioneer Woman and she's making chili. We're in Michigan and around here, at least in our families, chili is made with ground beef. So it's ground beef, beans, tomatoes, onions, seasoning etc. My husband is super picky and always said he didn't like chili. But a few times, many years ago I made a chili recipe with beef chunks, called it Mexican Stew and he liked it. But that's been a while and I didn't call it chili. So the Pioneer Woman is making chili with chunks of beef and dh is all OMG, that's not chile, it's beef stew. I told him that many people make chili with beef chunks and not ground beef, and many don't use beans. He does not believe me! Or I should say he believes me but doesn't believe it's Chili. So how do YOU make chili? Ground beef or chunks? Beans or no beans? Ground beef chili is for cheap and quick meals. Large chunks of beef chili is for when you have plenty of time to cook and want a more hearty meal. It’s not stew because it doesn’t have vegetables.

I've made simple chili with ground turkey or beef, canned tomatoes, onions, red beans, and a seasoning packet.
The band used to have a chili cook-off before a game, usually the end of September. I found out there were a few vegetarians and vegans in the band so I made a vegan chili and that was a hit.

Mexican red chili is just red chili and chunks of meat. Nothing else. (red chili con carne)
Chili and beans is ground beef and beans.
American chili just seems to be a mish mash of a lot of things. I am always surprised to hear what people put in their chili, especially since I only grew up with the way it is made in Mexico.

My family is a family of cook off chili cookers. Chili for competition is chili grind which is not quite chunks and not quite ground. We are not allowed to put anything in the chili that marks the chili and makes it recognizable to the judges. No seeds, no peppers, no onions, no beans, no mushrooms. It is sauce and meat and that is it. The trick is getting the flavor into your chili without leaving any markings in it. I use a jalapeño and serrano pepper with small slits cut in them. I put both of them in a clean ankle hose and let it simmer in the chili. After it has simmered for about an hour, I squeeze the juice from the peppers into the chili so I get the flavor but the hose screens out the seeds.

I do make chili with ground beef but I also make it with just about an meat available. I’ve made it with shredded beef or shredded pork or chicken as well.
For me chili is made by the spices & the peppers. Also imho chili must have beans of some kind, else it’s just a spicy meat sauce, sloppy joes or the infamous ‘loose meat’ stuff they sell somewhere in mid or southern America. I mean I’m not going to argue with someone who serves me a beanless chili, but in my head I’m missing the beans.
So yea I’m sure pioneer woman’s chili is chili.
I’m completely unclear on the regional differences between ‘loose meat’ ‘Sloppy Joes’ And ‘barbecue’
Because they seem interchangeable depending on where you are. Previously I would have said the difference was sauce but I’ve been served ‘sloppy Joes’ with bbq sauce. I’ve been served both pulled ‘loose meat’ and chopped ‘loose meat’ I’m not really sure what the hell loose meat really is. And who decided ‘loose meat’ was an appetizing name?
But I draw the line at anyone calling chopped meat in bbq sauce ‘barbecue’ because it isn’t. southerners would y’all back me up on that?

I'm in Texas so no beans.
I make mine the way my mom makes hers. Ground beef and chunks and sausage. I buy a roast and have the butcher chunk it up for me. He also grounds a roast for me. I also use a local spicy sausage, Zummo's. Brown them all and throw them together with a 3 alarm mix. I add more red chili, garlic, onions and bell pepper.
I make this for my husband's coworkers and they love it. Most of them say it's the first time they've eaten chili made with ground beef and chunks and sausage.

I'm southern and I make chili with ground beef and NO beans!!! The ground beef is supposed to be a more coarse grind but I don't care either way. What I DO care about is NO beans. DH on the other hand was born and raised in Illinois and he thinks it has to have beans. Since I'm cooking, no beans, he has to cook them in a separate pan and mix my chili in with his beans!
As far as that article is concerned, I never thought chili was Mexican food, I thought it was southern food!

The chili police aren't going to arrest you for making it any way you like it. To me, as long as it has a soup consistency and has chili powder in it than you can call it chili. My husband participates in chili cook-offs and he makes it with chunks of beef for that - without beans. I prefer it to be made with ground beef, and I can eat it happily with or without beans. Heck, I even like white chili made with chicken!

Chili is about the seasonings—not the meat. I’ve made it with ground beef, beef chunks, chicken chunks, ground turkey. With beans and without—one type of bean and multiple types of beans.
