Ok, mild disagreement lol.
Neither of us are big chili fans, but we're watching the Pioneer Woman and she's making chili. We're in Michigan and around here, at least in our families, chili is made with ground beef. So it's ground beef, beans, tomatoes, onions, seasoning etc.
My husband is super picky and always said he didn't like chili. But a few times, many years ago I made a chili recipe with beef chunks, called it Mexican Stew and he liked it. But that's been a while and I didn't call it chili.
So the Pioneer Woman is making chili with chunks of beef and dh is all OMG, that's not chile, it's beef stew. I told him that many people make chili with beef chunks and not ground beef, and many don't use beans. He does not believe me! Or I should say he believes me but doesn't believe it's Chili.
So how do YOU make chili? Ground beef or chunks? Beans or no beans?

We make chili with cut up steak that we brown up a bit before combining everything.
DH makes the chili around here, and he makes it with beans and a lot of peppers and even mushrooms. Yes, I know, it's not real texan chili, but the veggies make it go a lot further, and we love it! Super spicy, too, with some jalapeños in there!

Beef chunks and no beans. I use to go to chili cook-offs in Texas. Some used ground beef but, NOBODY puts beans in chili.

I make it with ground beef and add beans. DH makes it with beef chunks and no beans. He claims his is the traditional way from back in the cowboy days. I don't really care and will eat either one because I love chili!

I'm from Illinois. I make chili with ground beef and beans (dark red kidney beans).
I do know that other people don't use beans and some use beef chunks, and that's still chili.

We make it several different ways! It depends on the day and what we have on hand. Most often it is regular ground beef. Sometimes I have coarse ground beef that has a chunkier texture which we like. Occasionally I will have leftover stew meat or roast when I’ve bought a large portion and will make chili with that.
Always Penzeys chili spice, always tomato, a variety of other things depending on the day. I never make the same chili twice.
Never beans due to my sensitivity to them.
I think chili just is whatever you make it and that’s one thing I like about making chili, you can just put stuff in the pot and cook it and it’s delicious.

SC here- back in the day when I made it I used ground beef and beans and it was called Chili and Beans. If you say chili here that just means plain chili for hotdogs! Meat chunks are beef stew.

I HATE chili but the recipe I use that my family loves has pinto beans, beef mince (ground beef), petite diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, onions, and spices

Over Thanksgiving last year I made a venison chili. It had chunks and beans and my boys devoured it.

Lean ground chuck and Brooks mild chili beans in chili sauce. (We don’t like spicey food).

It's all about who's cooking it (and what we have in the fridge), but it always has beans. Unless it's chili dog chili, then no beans.

Ground beef, not hamburger, and no beans or tomatoes. Aren't they the same thing? I make my chili with ground beef and, as required by everyone who grew up in the midwest, it must be served school style with a big soft fluffy iced cinnamon roll. There just is no other way. I do make Chili Colorado with chunks of beef. Mmm.. that is good. Just a different type of chili. I serve that with fresh flour tortillas

I make it both ways. If I use ground beef I add beans. If I use steak, I don’t use beans. I prefer the steak version.

I grew up in the Midwest in the 1970’s. Chili had ground beef and beans, which I am guessing is somewhat a regional thing (Texans of all ages seem to agree about the beans) but in our specific case, it was economic. Ground beef and beans are cheap!

Ok, mild disagreement lol. So how do YOU make chili? Ground beef or chunks? Beans or no beans?
OK, JUST GREAT! Now, you and your DH are going to get the rest of the country (well, at least the Peas) into an argument too! LOLOLOL!
So, personally, I make my chili, like my Dad taught me … Ground beef, Tomatoes, Spices AND Beans! (Dad put CORN in his too, but I don't like that part, so I leave it out!)
I have found that people call "CHILI" anything with any variation or combination of a few key ingredients (in any order and in any quantity and in any combination or lack thereof!) ------ If it has any of these things in it in any combination with anything else, people will call it "CHILI"
chili powder, beans, ground beef, beef chunks, any meat really, tomatoes, any kind of spicy pepper or spicy pepper powder, cumin, cayenne pepper, any combo of chicken/turkey with beans qualifies and chili too.
LOLOLO!!!
So I guess in this case of your argument, YOU'RE BOTH RIGHT! Everyone wins! Yay!!!

Texas here-NO BEANS!!!!!!
We use ground beef, but it ground for chili and is larger than regular ground meat, but not as large as stew chunks.

Ground beef with just enough super mashed beans to thicken it up. I hate the taste of whole beans. I'm more of a chili con carne person.

I do the basic ground beef and beans, but one time made a white bean chili with chicken and green peppers. All of them (including the beef chunks) are all variations of chili. You are right.
