So I've left it to the last minute and I need a gift for my daughter-in-law, whom I adore. She's older than most grads, as this is her PhD. and she has lots of very nice stuff. I have given her jewelry and handbags in the past so I've been to that well pretty often. She travels A LOT and has all kinds of packing cubes, power converters, gadgets, noise-cancelling headphones, etc. but I'm thinking there might be some magic travel gadget that she doesn't have. I'm stumped and we're going to see them this weekend. Any ideas? Many thanks!

Money. You can never go wrong with cash.
And if you must give a gift, something small and sentimental

Does she have one of those rolling suitcases that go under an airline seat? My SIL travels a lot, and she loves hers - it's saved her tons of money, now that airlines are starting to charge for using the overhead bins. This article lists some recommended styles.

There are people who travel with a pashmina or another kind of shawl/scarf that can be handy on airplanes. Does she have something like that?

I would give cash. Or, since you mentioned that she travels a lot, gift card for an airline or hotel, or a specific place if she likes someplace special(Disney, Cruise line, etc..).

Now that I have develop some cervical spine issues, a shoulder tote doesn't cut it! I have a small suitcase that I can pull, but it is a target for the airlines to put in cargo as you board. I hate that! Because-it has my computer, light jacket, ipad, meds, kindle, etc. in it!I don't want to gatecheck any of that!

I know you said travel, but I think there's certain things a "woman" should have.... What about a very nice crystal flower vase with nice flowers in it? vase things remembered Or what about some nice wine glasses with a bottle of wine or champagne? image Good luck finding that perfect thing and congrats to her!

Is she planning on "doing" academia? I received one of those dry embosser things for my professional books in my collection--it says from the Library of annaintx, Ph.D. I LOVE IT. I think my friend got it at Office Depot/Office Max, you order it at the printing desk. Or a nice leather padfolio thing with her initials embossed? I take a cheapo one to meetings. A nice leather one would be pretty, here's one at Levenger. Essential Briefolio at Levenger

Where does she travel? Do you know where her next trip is booked? I would probably call the airline and upgrade them to first class if it was reasonable. Or maybe have champagne delivered to their room with a, "Congratulations on your PhD! Enjoy celebrating!"
But I suggest that because I kinda hate stuff. I prefer experiences and consumables.

Bracelet or necklace with "She believed she could and she did," a bottle of champagne if she would like that and a nice card. You say she already has many nice things so maybe she does not need the cash? If not, a gift card for something she would enjoy, maybe a favorite restaurant?

Thanks for all the great ideas! It's so hard. She travels the world and has been to over 50 countries so she has stuff that I envy. I may try to find some concert tickets or give her a Travelsmith GC so she can pick something she wants. Love the mug, BTW.
