I know most of the peas aren't MD's, but I just want some opinions from those who may be able to relate.
I have an issue with my elbow, basically along the lines of tennis elbow. It's been ongoing for awhile, like started probably late January/February. Primary care said rest it, no improvement. In May I saw an ortho and he did a cortisone shot. He basically said it's mixed results. I had good results, it much improved things, BUT I still have some pain. I think the pain is getting a little worse because i'm starting to think should I have another?
He was very unspecific about how many or how often you can have cortisone. At first I thought ok maybe a second will resolve the lingering mild pain. Now most days i'm pretty good, but some days it's become more sore and painful. So anyone have better info on how many/how often? I'm sitting on the fence of don't waste one vs maybe this will cure it.

When I was getting them in my elbow the soonest I could get another one was three months. It definitely helped more each time. But man they hart like a bitch when you’re getting them.

I had one in my neck while waiting for a surgery date. It hurt like hell while it was happening, and that extra pain continued for probably 2 days while it began to reduce the inflammation. I only had the one injection because I had the surgery a few months later. I was told at the time that you shouldn’t have more than 3 injections in any on specific location on your body. I don’t know if this is due to reduced efficacy or possible problems brought on, but that was the limit they told me.

Over the years I have had them in both feet several times, my hand once, and both knees this spring. From my experience, they don't last long enough and my various doctors have wanted me to wait about 6 months. I was just diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis, so at least I now know why I'm always in pain. Sometimes they take a while to really take effect and using the joint a lot at first is important to spread the meds around and get it working. I think it's also hard for doctors to get them to just the right spot. Hopefully you can get another soon if that is what you need to relieve the pain.

I get one about every year and a half in my left knee. I had surgery when I was in high school for torn cartilage and have a small area of bone on bone that now 20 years later has become arthritis. I get one shot and 4 weeks later get another one and then I’m good for about a year. I’ve had no adverse reactions and it’s definitley worth the 10 seconds of discomfort. Next time we are going to do a cortisone shot and then 4 weeks later Synvisc.

My husband got them in his knee when he was working - they masked the pain that he had from almost no cartilage being left. Then his knee blew out and the ortho said he was too young for a knee replacement so he lost his job.
My insurance took over and again he had to follow drug protocol - luckily the cortisone portion was done, so he had the Synvisc goo, but he was already bone on bone. He got the knee.
Now the other knee has started acting up - cortisone first again.
Be careful with the shots because you want to make sure you aren't damaging what's there just because the pain has been dulled.

Dh gets them 3-4 times a year for his back. Without them he couldn’t remain active.
I had tennis elbow in my arm. PT took care if it. Have you tried that in addition to your shot?

Oh, wow I had no idea about this and my dr has never mentioned it. I have one on the top of my foot and do not want to have it cut out because of down time. It never bothers me, but it's not the prettiest thing in the world- but the scar that would be left wouldn't be, either. I'm going to ask about this. OP- Cortisone is a miracle drug for me. It's been a while since I had just a regular injection because I get ESIs now.

Cortisone injections never helped with my elbow (carpal tunnel syndrome, but when it was at its worst, I had pain from my fingertips to my ears). For me, surgery was the only thing that helped, so all those painful, stabbing, terrible, awful injections were a waste of time. Did I mention I didn't like them?

I have had cortisone shots and won't do them again.
1. Painful when I got them in my knee. 2. I get what my DH calls 'roid rage'. Seriously, I used to get moody as hell. Was it because the shots hurt? Was it the steroid itself? I don't know. But it happened every time I would get a shot. 3. And the biggest reason I won't ever do it agin is because I get a side effect called 'flares'. Read up on flares before you decide to get a shot. Some never get these, but I do. 4. I don't think the shots actually helped long term.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm happy with the results because it's really reduced the pain. I just can't decide whether I should get another to try to get rid of the rest of it or whether I should wait and see if it gets worse before deciding.
I don't want to jump the gun and shoot myself in the foot if it comes back worse and I've maxed out of the number I can get. Then I think maybe one more could be the cure for the residual pain.

I would get the 2nd shot. You are nowhere close to maxxing yourself out. The 1st one always helps me a little but its the 2nd shot that really gets shit done. My orthopedist explained how that works to me. It makes sense.

Please update when you decide. I have something going on in my shoulder where I can’t move it up to my head. My range of motion is seriously limited. They want me to have the shot but I am too scared. Too many differing stories.
Good of luck and I hope you get relief soon.
