money.cnn.com/2018/08/02/news/companies/brookstone-bankruptcy/index.html"The mall and airport seller, best known for massage chairs, quirky gadgets, and travel luggage, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in federal court on Thursday. It was Brookstone's second bankruptcy round in four years.... Unabated traffic losses at malls have plagued brick-and-mortar sellers. Mall vacancies reached a six-year high last quarter as a wave of stores closed, including Walgreens, Bon-Ton, Sears and Kmart, Best Buy, Kay and Jared, Matress Firm, and GNC." Life is change. We don't communicate largely by letter anymore. We don't transport ourselves largely by animal power anymore. And now the way we acquire things is changing. But change is bad when you're stilling on billions in retail real estate and too afraid to envision a different (and likely less profitable) future for that space and would rather moan and groan that change happens and can we please all go back to using Blockbuster and Borders and writing letters and buying carriage lanterns?

Brookstone doesn't surprise me at all, and in fact I thought they were already out of retail. They were such a fun place to stop into "back in the day." Those who are not actively trying to make the transition out of brick and mortar are behind the 8 ball in a big way.

I thought they were gone awhile ago. Still sad to see stores closing up.

I'm sad to hear that. I always enjoyed this store and usually bought small gifts around Christmas. I always planned to save up one day for a massage chair, but alas.
I think the desire for change from the consumer side is a little over stated. I LOVE bookstores and spend my money when I can. However, selection has become more and more limited at the remaining stores--so I buy online. People spend where they have options even if they'd prefer brick and mortar.

That's too bad. I guess now everyone will need to buy their "back massagers" off the internet LOL!

Awww, I used to love Brookstone. I would buy my Dad's Christmas gifts there every year. He loved gadgets (the engineer in him, I think!) and Brookstone always had fun stuff. I miss him...

I just watched When Harry Met Sally and they went to a Sharper Image store. Remember those? I thought they were out of business but their website is still up and says they have no retail locations.

I don’t have cable/satellite/ or streaming. It is too expensive, so we rent movies. I hate redbox, they don’t get movies until the movie has been out for a month.
But Hastings got movies in as soon as they were release, plus I could rent tv shows.
I miss Hastings.

I am sad about this too. We loved going into the store whenever we were at the mall and have bought Christmas presents from there almost every year. I'll miss it.

Ours even lets us reserve movies before they are released - still have to wait until they are released to check them out but at least we can reserve our spot early.

I thought they were gone awhile ago. seriously! i remember when they bit the dust the first time. and then they came back as kiosks and pop up stores. i can't say i'm surprised but i'm sure it's hard to compete with the likes of Amazon and Wal Mart.

Well, I LOVE their Nap stuff! We have lots of it. So, I just ordered more to make sure I have a supply if they are gone. Christmas gifts on the way. You can get 15% off your entire purchase using this code: WD8291

they have gone out of business several times already Filing for bankruptcy is not going out of business. Stores can continue and even grow through bankruptcy. Not sure this will happen this time, but it's not the same thing as closing, although they will likely close less profitable stores.

Not sure this will happen this time, but it's not the same thing as closing, although they will likely close less profitable stores. I read this morning that they are closing all their mall stores. Only the airport stores are staying open. I heard them described as that ubiquitous store full of cool products that nobody needs.

I don’t even know why I opened this thread bc I’ve never heard of Brookstone. But we were on the Atlantic City, NJ boardwalks yesterday. It’s a busy place. They have a 3 story mall. We used it a few times for the restrooms. Looking at the mall map, I’d say at least 80% of the stores were closed. So many empty spaces on that map. Also I recently went to a mall I used to go to, I was in the area and wanted saladworks. That place seemed dead too.

Interestingly, the mall in our old town and the one about 16 miles from us are thriving with new stores going in all the time. Wonder what the difference is.

Looking at the mall map, I’d say at least 80% of the stores were closed. So many empty spaces on that map. I don't think that many of those stores lasted long at all there. I haven't been there in a few years and I remember most of the stores were closed even then. It just wasn't a good location in general I think.
