I would think you can paint it.

Paint it. If you use a chalk paint it wont need to be sanded. Otherwise you will need to prime/sand.

yes it can! just sand it down and use a good paint with primer so you can skip a step. sanding is key though.

yes. it is an oak filing cabinet. i would use primer and paint, not a combo. the combo is not nearly as good and the two steps.
you could also strip and stain it.

I just painted an oak mantel and used this deglosser instead of sanding. Less messy. I then primed and painted it. Turned out beautiful.

It can. BFF’s husband (who was a painter by trade) needed something to do so he painted all their furniture hunter green. I dom’t Know what he used but whatever he did, don’t do that. It looked like heck. I think he took that furniture in the divorce. They had solid oak nice furniture.
NB Her ex-husband is a terrible painter. This was just exhibit A.

katniss that mantel looks beautiful! Did you do the refinishing in place or did you remove the mantel and work on it outside? Did the solution stuff smell terrible or make a big mess? I have some pine woodwork I would like to paint white and am wondering if it is possible to do it without removing it from the walls? Thanks for any help you can give! Hopefully my question might help others as well.

Hopefully my question might help others as well. I left the mantel as is and taped off the wall using blue painters tape. The solution had a slight smell but not bad. It was very easy to use. Just put a small amount on a soft cloth and rubbed it in. Waited the directed dry time and primed and painted.
