Background: I'm 47 and have had a horrible week sleep wise. My first college student leaves in three weeks, and I start back to school that week. My dh and I just went through a stressful house hunt (negative outcome) which I don't think is helping.
I haven't skipped cycles yet, but I am probably starting perimenopause.
Just wondering (hoping) I might get out of this cycle and not be dealt the hand of horrible sleep from here out.
I have cut out screen time after 8, coffee after 8 am, and alcohol. I am also jogging daily and walking early in the day. Haven't tried melatonin yet. I don't take any medications.
I just had my physical and didn't mention this because it literally just started.
Any advice?

Try the melatonin. It does help me.

I had symptoms while still having a normal period for a few years. My doctors knew I was in early perimenopause through my bloodwork and symptoms. Insomnia is definitely stress related. Melanonin knocks me completely out. I took half of the recommended dose and was struggling to even walk to the bed or go to the bathroom. So take it after you're tucked in with a good book. Hot chocolate makes me feel warm and sleepy. I love the Abuelita cocoa mix or tabs. The cinnamon and vanilla is really delicious. I use 1/4 tab for 8 oz milk. The powder is easier to use since you don't have to break a big disc of chocolate up. Look for it in the 'Ethnic' aisle in the grocery store. Ghirardelli sweet ground chocolate & cocoa is also delicious as hot cocoa. It's in the baking section. I've also seen it in a bag instead of a canister. I prefer that to the hot cocoa mix because I can control how much sugar (if any--I don't think it needs extra) and what kind. I often add a spoon of marshmallow fluff and drink it an hour or two before bed. Chamomile tea is also very calming and the ritual of drinking something hot before bed makes me sleep better. If you love lavender, this tea is delicious. Harney & Sons Yellow and Blue tea Evening primrose is also supposed to be good for perimenopause symptoms. I hope you sleep better soon.
