Our dog (rescue) was named Savannah when we adopted her. We changed her name to Molly.

Our dog was a rescue and about two when we got her. No one knew her original name. The temporary rescue family called her Fifi for two weeks before we adopted her. We didn't feel that fit her and changed her name to Sophie. She didn't seem to have trouble adjusting.

I had a cat we thought was a girl, and gave her a feminine name (I don't even remember what it was!).
Took kitty to the vet for the first time and changed his name to Fred.

I agree, animals respond to your body language and voice. They quickly learn the new name. We call Emma Em, Emmy, Baby Em, Emma Lou... she comes to it all. There's usually a treat and what is there not to like about a treat? But here's a good name story. We had a golden lab named Sandy (her name when we got her, but it really fit her, so we kept the name.) A neighbor took care of her for us when we were on vacation and Sandy would go back to our house when she went outside. So the neighbor would have to call her back. But the neighbor's name was also Sandy. So she would be walking down the road in the neighborhood calling, "Sandy! Come here, Sandy!" She got a few comments from other neighbors about that one!

We had a dog that we called Black Dog for months, she was a drop off and I didn't want to keep her. Couldn't get anyone to take her so we finally decided to keep her and named her Maggie, occasionally we still called her black dog. She lived with us for 12 years before she went to the Rainbow Bridge.

My ex knew someone who had a cat that needed to be re-homed, that was about a year and a half to two years old. Found out the woman's kids named him "Sorry." He was such a cute fluffy little guy, and I thought that name was just sad. I changed it to Pookie, after Garfield's teddy bear.

My cat, a chocolate point show Siamese, was named Chocolate Essence. The owner called her Essie. I really didn't like that so I renamed her Kylie, a name I liked at the time. There was never any problem with her learning the new name since all my cats tend to come to me no matter which one I call. They love the attention.

I'd go ahead and change it.
I have no cat experience, but I know my parents' dog did just fine with his name change.
My parents had a dog who had 4 puppies. They were not planning on keeping any of the puppies, and so they let my brother give them all temporary names until they had new owners.
Then, before this particular dog sold, they found a little tumor on him, and wound up choosing not to sell him until that was taken care of. (Apparently it was something he could have lived with, and my mom feared the new owners would opt not to take care of it, and she felt strongly about having it removed.)
Anyway, by the time all of that was said & done, Mom fell in love with the little guy and was faced with the fact that she disliked the name my brother picked and she really hated the nickname we had been using.
So she talked about it for a few weeks and finally decided to change his name.
For awhile he'd answer to both names, but now he only answers to his new name.

It's good to see I am in good company of changing pet names. My rescued dog came with the name Saturn. I did not like it and never called him that. He got his real name just a few hours after coming home.
OP I would not hesitate to change the name even if you've have him 4 months. It's better to do it now than find yourself hating it years down the road. And it does not have to match the current name either. Your cat will eventually know his name whatever it is.

I grew up on a farm, although it was only a working farm (poultry) when I was very small. But the point is that it wasn't strange that all sorts of stray cats found their way to us. When a particular one showed up, my sister and I thought he should be called Struedel. (Nope, don't know why.)
My aunt did not like that name, and called him Rover.
As he was a cat, he came whenever he felt like it, regardless of the name we called him. Mostly, he just came when it was dinner time.

We've changed cats names when we've adopted them. My late, sweet Mickey lived 4 tortured years as "Poncho." I don't know WHAT they did to him, but he had serious trust issued for a long time.
Haley was Jasmine before we got her. That's just not a cat name, to me!

I lol'd at your post because we had a cat that we named Abby, but after sever weeks decided she looked more like a Scabbers (also from Harry Potter). lol. She is an orange tabby with blue eyes and is very pretty from the front, but from behind she has a big butt with a short tail that looks kind of like a rat tail so we call her scabbers, or scabby abby. It thoroughly confused the vets office and they still have her in their office charts as Abby even though she has been called Scabbers for 12 years! So, I say go for it. Change the name! The cat probably wont even notice!

Go for the name change- for a cat the only time it really matters is at the vet on paperwork. They only come when they feel like it or if there is food involved.

Thanks for all the replies and personal stories of changing your pet's name! It seems that it's more common than I thought. I will change his name. Dobbie just fits his personality so much better, and I really never like the name Koby, it was just the only one that no one hated, lol.
(Oh, and sorry for the long delay in getting back here. I went to bed shortly after posting and then spent the day with my grandchildren. Yeah, they wore me out, lol. I'm still trying to get the 3yo to go to sleep!)

Haley was Jasmine before we got her. That's just not a cat name, to me! It's funny how different names mean different things to us all. To me, Mickey is a mouse, not a cat, and I love Pancho. Sounds like a big fat cat to me. And I think Jasmine sounds much more like a cat to me than Haley! One weird thing I did was change the spelling of my cat's name from Vinny to Vinnie. The first time I took him to the vet, they asked me how to spell it, and I was stumped. I'd never thought about it (he came with the name already). I replied he never told me (yuk yuk yuk! But it really was the first thing I thought of!) She spelled it with a Y. After a couple years,I decided I really preferred the IE, and I changed it, but they kept spelling it wrong even after I corrected it. Whatever. I kind of hate that old scrapbook pages are about Vinny instead of Vinnie.

Our second police K9 went from Rokx (pronounced Rocks) to Hex. They already had a Rocky on the K9 team and thought the dogs would get confused during training. It was an easy adjustment for him.
Our grey cat went from Silas (Si) to Simone (Si) once we found out he was a she. lol My daughters have called her Mone since we changed her name to Simone. They've never called her Si or Simone.

We adopted my sister's dog when she moved to a pet free unit complex. She called him Rusty. We changed it to Frankenstein. He was 18 months old when we got him and he was fine. I say change it, if it makes you happy.

See, I think cat names should have a long E sound. And we knew 2 Jasmine humans at the time, so it didn't sound like a cat name.
My former-Poncho-turned-Mickey had clearly been abused at his previous home, and we changed his name right away because we didn't want to be associated with the abuse/abuser in anyway.

when DH and I rescued our first dog, we didn't think you were allowed to change their names. I don't know why we thought that. it's funny to look back on it now. that first dog had the strangest name too. but we didn't change it.
every dog after that, we changed their names right after they came home from the rescue since we didn't like names like "sugar" and "pierre". acckk.
I thought I had the perfect name for our most recent dog. i even started referring to him with that name even before he came home a few days later after seeing him for the first time. everyone hated the first name I chose so I had to pick another name before I picked him up from getting neutered. I must admit, I didn't know what I was thinking with the first name. I much like his current name much better.

Not sure this counts, but we adopted 2 cats from the shelter. One was named Trick, the other Espresso. We renamed Espresso "Treat" (it was Halloween and we already had a Trick!).
When DH and I got married, we succumbed to my sisters plea to take on one of her kittens. He was an orange Tabby sadly named Creamsicle. We renamed him Merlin.

Yup. We have cats who are sisters. Originally, DD named them Ti and Di. However, one day I was playing with Ti and just though she looked like a Fred. And being Harry Potter fans, if you have a Fred, you have to have a George. So, yeah, we have female cats named Fred and George. Fred George, helping DD play Monopoly Another one of our cats was also originally named by DD, when she was in a Star Trek phase. Data. This cat has a "spot" on the couch. If you sat in it, so did he. Or he got irritated. So his name is now Sheldon. Sheldon - who looks a lot like George. Sheldon has a white tip on his tail, though.

My cat is a rescue. He went by Rufus, but I changed it to Paul. He's a cat though. You can call them any name you want, but they will only listen if they feel like it.

Yes we got a rescue dog who was called chief but we changed it to Tucker which he responds to well. We did the same... He was called Cruz... and we named him Patrick.. now that is all he knows. He was about a year when we got him.

Stella came from the SPCA as Cambria. DH was having nothing to do with that name and re-named her before we were home. I honestly don't think she cared - I tried calling her Cambria a few times and just looked at me like I was nuts.

I'm glad that Dobbie fits, great choice. You may want to know that in the books, the character's name is spelled Dobby, if that matters to you. Glad you enjoyed Grandma time

Dobbie sounds so similiar, go for it. He won't mind. We have a rescue Aussie that name has been changed, for obvious reasons, but not by us. One name before we got him was same as DS so I'm glad they changed it. We have a cat who WISHES we'd change her name. Her name is "Starry-I-Love", named by DD when she was 4, after previous cat "Star" died at 20. We usually just called her Star or Kitty, but if we use her full name DD swears cat gives her the death stare. She deserves it! "I was FOUR". is her usual response when she is teased from someone for that name.

Go ahead and change it. It sounds similar and its the cadence that they respond to. I "inherited" an elderly cat once named "Miss Kitty"...which didn't fly with me. I love Gone With the Wind, and unlike everybody else, my favorite character is Melanie. So, I began calling her "Miss Mellie"...she was fine with it. Eventually, it morphed into my preferred, Melanie. She was okie dokie with that too, as long as I called her for treats!
