I have an expired cake mix from King Arthur. Is there a way to revive it? Can I add baking powder or soda to it? Thanks

It’s not the baking soda that is bad, but the flour. I say 95% of people old flour does not bother, but there are a few that will get very sick from it.

The oldest I've baked with is 12 months. If unopened, you are likely fine but may want to add a bit of baking powder and do a taste test before baking.

Flour can go rancid. I would do a taste & smell test first. Two years is a really long time.

2 years? Let it go. Why would you consider using it the much pay the expiration. Are you just being cheap?

We all do, to some extent. I would rather waste food than feed bad food to my husband. I've gone up to a couple of months past expiration but I would never go a couple of YEARS. DH would get pissed if I did. When I debate keeping expired food, he always says " nothing costs that much, we are not that poor, and no one should be that cheap. Toss it!" And I do.

I don't feed bad food to my family. Actually, I didn't know that flour can go bad. Now that I know, I won't have to ask again because it will go in the trash.

Toss it. I would have no problem six or eight months. But two years is too long.

I don’t waste food but I’ve recently read where things like cake mix can harbor mold and fungus if it’s too old. I just make sure I’m using up what’s in my pantry. I recently moved all of my dry goods because I had stuff going way past expiration because the cabinets weren’t designed for easy access. Now I’m in use it up mode. I’ll stock up at the thanksgiving sales. 2 years is no good for anything. Except maybe mustard.

Toss it. I would have no problem six or eight months. But two years is too long. This is my feeling, too. I’m not particularly concerned about expiration dates, but that’s too far gone for a baking mix. Toss, and be more careful in future to use mixes sooner. Canned food, OTOH ... I’ll keep that around pretty much forever.

That’s tough...King Arthur isn’t cheap and it’s good box mix. But I would also toss a package that expired 2 years ago.

My mom stores mixes in her freezer, so if it had been in the freezer, I probably would use it, but would also not plan it take it to a get together in case it doesn't rise. I think you could add a little backing powder, but still no guarantee that it won't be a flop. Then you will feel bad you wasted the eggs. lol I think when it comes down to it, I would toss.

I would toss it. I accidentally made a lemon cake from a mix that was expired by a year (was in the cabinet and had gotten pushed to the back a bit) and didn't realize it until I bit into the gross cake. It did not taste good at all! After that, I went through my cabinet and made sure anything expired was tossed.

I'm a bit fanatical about dates. There is no way I want to be sick or have my family sick so I have no problem tossing something. ds works with food. He has somehow adopted a 2 day rule with food/leftovers. You order pizza, he'll eat leftovers until day 2 then he's out. I always ask the owner of any leftovers in my fridge before tossing....but if they're his and I know when he brought them in, there's no need to question

Yep - toss. I have used some KA mixes that weren't even out of date and they had meal worms in them.

Throw it out and buy a new box of cake mix! Why is this even a question?
