I usually eat cold cereal (Cheerios or Honey Bunches of Oats) with 1% milk 3 to 5 times a week. Starting a few weeks ago, I noticed that my stomach was a bit upset shortly after eating cereal.
Then it became more pronounced with multiple trips to the bathroom and I came to the conclusion that I have developed an intolerance to lactose. However, I don't notice the same bad effects when eating greek yogurt (Youpait Hint of variety). Is that possible?
I'm now eating scrambled eggs one day and then yogurt with fruit and some dry oats the next.

Yes, it is possible. Yogurt is easier to digest than milk. The good bacteria in yogurt help digest the yogurt for you.

Yes. I have more trouble with some things than others. Sour cream (too much, anyway) = big problem. Yogurt = not so much. Maybe I'm just not prone to eating too much when it's yogurt instead of sour cream. ETA also, have you tried the Lactaid milk? I don't use it, because I can handle a small amount of milk in cereal okay, but I hear good things about it.

Yes, different dairy products have different amounts of actual lactose in them. I find straight milk, even in smallish quantities (such as over cereal) often gives me a bit of a stomach ache, but yogurt seems to be fine for me. I can also eat a full serving of most cheese without a problem. Ice cream is a no without taking Lactaid.

Yes, my husband can eat yogurt but not milk. I recently bought whole milk instead of my skim by mistake and after eating my morning cereal I could feel the milk sitting heavy on my stomach. No problem with the skim milk. I can eat yogurt and ice cream without a problem.

I've actually had a bit of stomach trouble after other meals and snacking the past few weeks as well and it just hit me light a lightening bolt, what if it is related to gluten?? Maybe it is the cereal and not the milk? We don't have any more milk so I can't try out that theory right now.
Does gluten intolerance feel similar to lactose intolerance (or really any type of food intolerance)?

Yogurt doesn't have much lactose in it. Yoplait has a new one that is nearly lactose free (they used to have a completely lactose free one, but I don't think it did well in stores). It is called YQ, I believe.
Lactaid Milk is a good substitute for milk. DS also takes Lactaid rapid release pills (but the generic Costco version) when he eats dairy.

For my dd no. No lactose! Even lf yogurt causes issues due to the high sugar.
She uses lactaid milk.

lactose intolerance is different for each sufferer.
i think fairlife milk might be lower in lactose.
if you keep the lactaid pills on hand (and use them) you might be able to keep symptoms away.

There is lactose free yogurt - Green Valley. I have never tried it, but I've heard it's good.

I'm okay with yoghurt and aged cheeses - not so much with milk, sour cream, whipped cream (oh my is that not good), ice cream, and cheeses like mozzarella.
DD struggles with any dairy products - she can have a small quantity of anything but more than that and she's not a happy camper.

I can drink 2% milk, enjoy cheese on my tacos, and sour cream.
I can't eat anything made with full fat milk, buttermilk, or heavy cream. I can't even have most ice creams but I can have soft serve.
I've noticed that certain brands of cheese, ice cream, and other dairy products bother me more than others.
It all comes down to amount of lactose. Eventually, I'll probably won't be able to have any without a stomach ache.

Yes. My dd has a lactose intolerance. She doesn't eat yogurt much but it doesn't bother her. Milk, ice cream, cream cheese and whipped cream are the worst for her. But most other cheeses are fine. She uses Lactaid milk and takes Lactaid pills for cream cheese etc. However ice cream is really difficult for her even with Lactaid, so she rarely indulges.

No idea on the lactose vs gluten issue. Definitely different dairy products produce different results. I used to be able to eat things like enchilada's with a lactaid pill...until I couldn't anymore. I assume it's the amount of cheese in it.
I love vanilla almond milk on my cereal.

For some strange reason, I couldn't tolerate whipped cream (yes, the real 35% stuff) when I was pregnant. No problems now.
I rarely drink milk now as I live alone but this summer, eating the "good" ice-cream has made my tummy unhappy.
I don't eat yogurt & only eat a small amount of sour cream, so no issues with them.

Many people become increasingly lactose intolerant with age.
It's an insufficiency of the lactase enzyme. If you are not making much of it and overdo it on lactose, you'll get symptoms. If you make very little enzyme, it's very easy to use up what you have. You could be someone that can tolerate lactose, but not if you have milk everyday. The only time I have any lactose in my diet is ice cream. If I have ice cream two days in a row, I'll have an issue. If I have an actual serving of Halo Top or Enlightened (1/4 of a pint), I can tolerate it on day 1 if it's been a while since I've had ice cream but need to take a few pills on day 2.
There are so many solutions today. I grew up this way and it only became more severe over the years. Today, you can by lactase (Lactaid is the most common brand), lactose-free milk, and lactose free ice cream. There are several cheeses that are naturally low in lactose and even some lactose free yogurt. But, as already mentioned, the bacteria in yogurt can help with that digestion for the average person.

It really varies person to person. I can’t have any dairy other than butter. Even my burger cooked next to a cheeseburger gives me symptoms. Lactaid pills or milk doesn’t work for me either.
I do ok with Fairlife milk, but the only diary that I’m symptom free with is the new A2 milk. The cows are genetically different and don’t produce the protein with lactaid, so no issues. I’m so hoping that someday they will make cheese with A2 milk. I miss cheese!

Yes, it is possible. Yogurt is easier to digest than milk. The good bacteria in yogurt help digest the yogurt for you. The active yogurt culture acts as a probiotic to help the digestion. I am lactose intolerant and eat a Greek yogurt almost every morning for breakfast with a little fruit and granola. ETA that I second (third? fourth?) the recommendation of using Lactaid milk and Lactaid pills (generic Costco fast-acting lactase pills) for when you eat milk-based foods that your system can't tolerate. I was fine with dairy until after DD#2 was a toddler, then became lactose intolerant. Lactaid milk & pills have been lifesavers.

I am anther who can have yogurt but not milk. Actually, I can have some milk but only one serving of it in a two day period. Any more than that and I get an upset stomach. I can have some cheese, but only certain types.

Does gluten intolerance feel similar to lactose intolerance (or really any type of food intolerance)? I will say this, I get horrible gas after eating Cheerios of any kind. I LOVE Cheerios, but I get kinda bloaty and gassy, sometimes have to go to the bathroom. I think something has changed in how they make it because it never used to happen. I've only noticed this in the past year or so. I drink milk like crazy, so I know it's not milk. And I eat bread, so I know it's not gluten. It's the Cheerios.

I my stomach prefers lactose free milk. Most stores have thier own lactaid free milk that’s cheaper than the brand name lactaid.
I can eat some yogurts no problem, hard aged cheeses are not a problem. Other dairy can give me issues. I stopped eating ice cream.

You’ll just have to try and see what your system allows.
I have issues with ice cream. But I’m okay if I eat it right after other foods, but if I have it as a snack I’m a hot mess. And certain kinds of ice cream are better than others.
A little glass of milk treats me fine, a large glass, ugh. Too much sour cream, bad. A dollop is fine.

I'm milk intolerant but can handle yogurt, cheese, and usually ice cream and gelato with no problems. Give me a glass of milk or milk in my cereal and it's cramping/gas/bathroom.

I actually came home hungry while the rest of the family were stuffed. It was still fun, but you don’t realized how much dairy is in every food.

It's 3 days of gastro-intestinal misery. The soft goat cheeses are delicious, and mild, like a cream cheese. It comes in flavors like fig, cranberry, & blueberry, too. All my family loved it with crackers last Christmas. The plain is good on homemade pizza or in salads. Check this: linkBummer about the fair! I don't eat fried food, either, so you are right, there are few choices. I send my DD and my DH without me. It's their thing.

However, it turned out for me that it is the oats that are bothering my system. I have to eat cerals with no oats, can't eat oatmeal or granola bars with oats. I can generally do all right with oats one day, but if I try to eat them two days in a row, I regret it.

I can no longer eat ice cream or cream sauces without consequences, but yogurt and small amounts of cheese don't bother me.
Dairy also triggers skin issues for me, so I haven't had milk for 5ish years.
