It's a beautiful day here today and the weather is perfect for going to tag sales. I went to 2 tag sales this morning.
At the first one I bought an encyclopedia on Carnival Glass and a vintage, glass, pedestal display for Teaberry Gum. The display is an unusual find and I love Teaberry Gum so it's kind of neat to have.
At the second one I bought some new pieces of Lucite.
I plan on going to my usual auction tonight.
I thought some good topics that everyone can add their experiences to are: What have you seen more, or less of, in your bargain hunting trips? What prices have gone up or down? What seems more or less popular in your area?
Around here it feels like bargains are harder to come by. There seems to be a ton more clothes and electronics than ever before, phone cases by the score, nail polish, too! I see a lot of newer, never used items as well. Less heirloom type items and older toys and vintage Christmas items.
Prices are generally up on most things. Markdowns at the store don't seem to be much of a deal either. I used to be able to get amazing end of season deals on seasonal toys but haven't scored any so far this year.
Pyrex is still pretty popular here as well as mid-century furniture and decor. Depression and Carnival glass, Wedgwood, and crystal are selling for very limited money these days.
How are things in your area?

I picked up a nice work table for my DD today for only $10. It’s a metal base with a shelf and a press board top. She’s very excited about it, now just to get it down to her.

No garage sales for me just yet as it is still too hot and humid. Another 6-8 weeks before we get a real break in the weather. Ugh. This week I stopped in the thrift store and found two more silk scarves. One is an oblong Laurel Burch Cat. The second has no name or label, but is a sweet park scene that reminds me of Paris with a red border. It's a nice silk with the hand rolled hem. I've been looking for more red scarves and this one will do nicely. At $2.50 each, I was pleased with them. What have you seen more, or less of, in your bargain hunting trips? What prices have gone up or down? What seems more or less popular in your area? More of: furniture, electronics, clothes, framed artwork (no walls for it with all those open floor plans!), and anything from the faux Italian phase everyone decorated in a few years ago, plush toys Less of: Sewing patterns, needlepoint canvases (not kits), LPs, scrapbook supplies Prices: Going up all the time. Cornflower Blue corning ware last year was in the $1-2 range, now $8 and up. Boutique department was selling a wool sweater that had no tags in it at all for $55! Needlepoint/Cross stitch kits are now priced in the $6.00 and up (mostly up) range, when just 6 months ago they would have been $1-3. Unfortunately, they overprice them so they just sit. Then people trash them by opening kits and losing parts. Then they get nothing for it. Used plush priced $1-$6. Paperback books are $1.50/each! They've gone a little nuts at my thrift store. Less popular: knick knacks unless they are a top brand, fine china (though they still overprice it), silverplate and crystal.

I went to my usual auction last night. I hit the mother load for bargains and I think that it's because it's a holiday weekend, and chairs were only 2/3 full.
The auction kicked off with table lots outside. I bid on two but won one. I'm a huge fan of Phantom of the Opera and one of my kids is starting to get into the music as well. There was a CD of it on the table. I ended up with it and the rest of the table for $1. There was a handful of CD's, Tupperware, Farberware nonstick saucepan with lid, crystal platters, and miscellaneous household stuff.
I got some farm fresh produce at less than 1/2 the price I would pay at the grocery store or a farm stand.
From the estate/used stuff and new stuff:
- Black Diamond headlamp, which is even nicer than the other one I bought months ago, $3.50.
- new Ampad slash pockets for notebooks, 2 packages for $1.
- 2 Cutco knives, $22.50, what a deal!
- 7 pieces of new T-Fal nonstick pots and pans for one of the kids, $15.
- 2 new T-Fal nonstick frying pans, also for one of the kids, $4 for the pair.
- 8 clear Depression glass dessert plates, $1.
- new Rowenta Effective Comfort Iron. It looks like they sell for $100+, I paid $9. Can I get a woot, woot?
- Tom Brokaw Greatest Generation DVD set, $2.
- 2 boxes of new craft kits and toy figures, $1. They end up working out to .04 cents each.
- new in the package board game, $2.
- tray lot of vintage jewelry, $5.
There were excellent deals for everyone. I think the only unhappy person was the auctioneer because he wasn't getting big bucks for anything.
How did you do yesterday and today?

I'm up early on this Labor Day holiday because the friends that own the auction house are having a huge auction today. I'm working the office as usual - registering bidders, handling absentee bids, and checking the customers out when it's over.
I have my own eye on a few things. I'm really hoping for an old tin litho wind-up Santa that "reads" when you wind him up. He's a little ratty with age, but I love him nonetheless.

Good luck with your bids today, be sure to let us know how it goes.
Also, when you've got free time, please weigh in with what you're seeing trending in the auction industry. I'd like your inside scoop.

Well, I didn't get the tin litho Santa. Unfortunately, I was busy in the office and just completely missed it going up for auction. And, darn it, I'd have paid more for it than the person who won it. Oh, well. I did get a fabulous set of eight Soho balloon wine glasses by Lenox for only $20 for all. I also got a channel-set diamond band with approx .80 carats of round brilliant diamonds. My oldest son is getting married in November and his beautiful fiance wants a channel-set band for her wedding ring. I texted her a photo and she said, "It's perfect!" I bought it and will take it to them for approval. If they decide they don't like it for any reason... I guess I have a new right-hand ring. Also, when you've got free time, please weigh in with what you're seeing trending in the auction industry. I'd like your inside scoop. Hmmm... in no particular order: - Anything designed to be collectible (Franklin Mint, Bradford Exchange, collectible plates. figurines, Beanie Babies, ANYthing) does not have any sort of value on the re-sale market. There may be a needle-in-a-haystack piece that does, but the vast majority of it does not. You will never recoup your investment, much less make money on it.
- Antique furniture hit its peak years ago. It would make you cry what beautiful antiques bring now.
- Sets of china & crystal are hard to unload. Unless it's a very high-end maker, you may not even get a buyer for it at a low price.
- Sets of sterling flatware and other sterling silver pieces sometimes bring only the melt value of precious metals. It breaks my heart to think of some of it being melted down and sold for scrap. Certain makers/patterns do remain sought-after and bring a premium price, though -- Kirk-Stieff "Repousse," International "Prelude," Wallace "Rose Point," Towle "Old Master," and Gorham "Strasbourgh" remain popular with our auction crowd.
- Fine jewelry can be very affordable at auction prices.
- Coins can still be very valuable and tend to hold that value. Especially pre-1964 silver money and rare notes/coins.
- High end art can be very vaulable, but it better have an iron-clad provenance.
- Basic household stuff sells, but often at pennies-on-the-dollar of what people originally paid for it.
Our auction house doesn't do food & cleaning products or bulk new resale merchandise so I can't speak to that type of item that I see references here some.

What have you seen more, or less of, in your bargain hunting trips? What prices have gone up or down? What seems more or less popular in your area? We're seeing pretty much the same things as we've been seeing for the last few years, just more of it. The housing market is so insane here that it seems like the downsizing/home sharing/migration out of the area results in mountains of housewares, furniture, and especially collectibles/tchotchkes at thrift stores. And the prices, like the numbers of shoppers, are going UP for pretty much everything. We see far more resellers than ever before. We went out over the weekend and found some cool stuff. On different aisles of one Goodwill, I found a total of 5 pieces of Ray Murray pottery that seemed to match so I bought it all even though I couldn't figure out what it was. I paid $1.99 for each and it ended up fitting together to form a large lazy susan type serving piece. We also found several pieces of vintage pottery made in the USSR. They were all in the $2-3 range. Truthfully, I think they're ugly, but SO likes gaudy stuff. The really fun find was a 116 quart Sterlight container full of Playmobil toys for $14.99. It was on a cart just coming out and so heavy that I couldn't lift it. I've been sorting for a couple days and it looks like they collected from 1974 to the present and best of all, it was well cared for. We started accumulating Playmobil in the early 90's and it was DD's favorite toy throughout her childhood so it's been fun sending her pictures of this haul. Strangely enough, even though we have dozens of themes and play sets stored away from DD, there is very little overlap in what I've sorted so far. Dang, this company produced a LOT of toys!

Nice finds, frazzled Mom. It's awesome when you're the first to see the cart coming out of the back room. I like that the Playmobil is such good quality. You've really got me wondering that the vintage pottery looks like. I collect vintage art pottery and one of the kinds I collect is considered ugly by a lot of people, Weller Silvertone, and it's much pricier than their other lines. Thanks for sharing what you're seeing trending in your area.

I bid on an online auction for a lot of books. Holy cannoli, you can't believe how many unless you actually see it. It was a full wall of built in bookcases. Thank goodness the very bottom had cabinet doors and that wasn't included. The books filled my entire trunk and back seat of my car. My husband estimates it to be about 500 pounds worth. Yikes, I better get sorting.
So far every book I've unpacked looks great.
There are a lot of books on the Civil War. The mother of a friend is very interested in the CW so I bought the lot with her in mind. There are reference books on collecting, which I'll keep a bunch of.
There are even some first edition books over 100 years old.
The previous owner must have been interesting, they were certainly well read!

I went to my usual auction Saturday night. It didn't feel like there was a lot there that interested me. I sat next to a friend so I didn't mind.
I started off the night by buying 2 table lots outside for $1 each. I left 25% of it on the tables, it wasn't even worth donating. I sorted the rest yesterday and am donating about 40% of what I took off the tables. I'm keeping some little wooden Christmas decorations, giving one of the kid's friends a bunch of knitting supplies and throwing the rest in my tag sale bin.
From the new stuff I bought some containers that you put beads or small collectibles in for $2 each.
I wasn't interested in any of the new grocery items or fresh produce.
From the estate/used stuff I bought:
- lot for $1 which included 7 small, hand painted, European antique plates. They are lovely. Also included in the lot was a new in the box carafe, and a pewter porringer.
- lot for $1 which included a microwave rice cooker, and hobnail basket.
- 2 boxes of vintage kitchenware for $2. There are some excellent pieces, a great 4 piece set of grilling tools for our camping box, 3 pieces of advertising giveaways, a great bread knife, a 2-piece Bakelite salad set, a Bakelite sharpening steel and some other ordinary pieces.
- box set of SAT flash cards for $1.
I finished the night with an assortment of boxed tealights. 2 boxes of Yankee Candle, 1 unknown brand, 1 Hallmark and 8 porcelain tealight holders for $2. One gal who I see at tag sales when I'm out and about and I have become friendly. She showed up at my last tag sale and helped unbox some of my stuff. Tealights are permanently on her wish list so I bought them for her.
Last item of the night sold caused a little stir. Auctioneer didn't see someone's second bid and they lost out on something they really wanted. To say they were upset would be an understatement. Yikes, I'm glad it wasn't something I was bidding on.
Did you find any great deals this weekend?

I popped into Salvation Army today and found a fused glass trivet for $1.99. I can't even guess how expensive it was new.
I saw my friend who is into a tealight candles. What did she find to buy? Candles, of course.

I got the deal of the century.. you can see my pictures and posts on the scrapbook page.. but I probably got close to 400 or so stamps, ink, paper, bags, tools, etc. all for the low price of $20. I looked one stamp up on ebay and it was $15 with one bid on it.... so yeah, now the process of what to do with them!! Keep and start stamping? Sell some or all? I am just not to sure. I took a bunch of pics so you can see all the stamps

I'm in such a purge mode myself that I'd probably sell them all. I'm thinking that the thrill of the hunt is more fun than the owning at this point.

Put the ones that you really like or want to learn how to use in your keep pile. Have any that are maybes? Most likely those are sell ones because I know you weren't initially looking at the stamps at the tag sale. Put the money that you make, after you repay yourself the initial $20, into something that really excites you. It's a win win.

All the different techniques with stamping is way beyond me... I don't even know what the differences are between types of inks.

I went to my usual auction last night. I got some great deals.
We kicked off the night outside with table lots.
I bought one table lot for $4 because it had a bunch of miniature china, Christmas figurines. There were 8 miniature hand blown glasses as well. The rest will be donated or was left behind.
My next purchase outside was a double table lot for $1. It was pretty sweet because it included a beautiful set of Danish salad servers. There were some very pretty vintage porcelain plates, vintage Christmas and vintage toys in original box. What made it even better was a lady came outside, she had gotten there late so she didn't see the outside stuff, liked a set of 3 glasses so I sold them to her for $1. So, my double table lot cost me only the sales tax. I even gave my sister and her boyfriend some stuff off the tables.
For the new merchandise and new food I only bought a ladle and a bag of candy. The fresh produce looked great but I already have enough.
From the used/estate stuff:
- box of men's cuff links, tie tacks and extra earring backs and pill boxes, $5
- new in package, project jackets for notebooks, $1
- box of vintage jewelry, $10
- New in the package men's t-shirts and underwear, the same brand I bought another week, for $1
- big batch of new school supplies, page dividers, numbered dividers and other stuff, $2, well over $50 worth.
- 3 new in the package "desk pads." They would be called desk blotters if they had the heavy paper center. Theses have tops that lift up where you can put pictures or notes, and it has lines of measurement down the sides. $3 each.
The night was fairly quiet, only a few items that there was much bidding on. I went out to eat with my sister and her boyfriend afterwards so it was a nice ending to the evening.
What treasures did you find this weekend?

I haven't been to my "usual" place in probably a month. My great money maker purchase was a 9 slot literature holder rack. Basically you put magazines in it, like at doctor's offices. It was brand new, still wrapped in plastic. I paid a whopping $2 for it. Online it sells for just under $200. I'll probably try and sell it for $50. For work I also picked up a metal folding easel which included a new dry erase board. I have one hanging up on my porch which I love writing notes for things the kids need to do (kids, they are in their 20's). The one I have is in rough shape so I'll switch it out. The easel will go to work. I paid like $7.50 for both pieces.
I'm sure I picked up a few other little things, nothing to write home about as the saying goes.

I've been out of commission with vertigo for over a week now. I did go to the auction last week because my sister was with me, and I had multiple meds, but she had other plans for tonight so I'm not going tonight. Ugh, feeling dizzy and having no fun. Cheer me up, tell me about your finds this week.

I bought 20 CTMH ink pads for $10 older pads and most still shrink wrapped. All are full of ink!
I also bought two large acrylic makeup holders to use in my craft room but my girls spotted them and I gave them up. I bought a clear set of small acrylic drawers too, and claimed it as my own.

I went to Value Village hoping to find a toy cash register for my farmers market dramatic play area at school and actually had my choice of 3! I couldn’t believe they had one good one, let alone 3! I also got an old fashioned food scale and some cool fake vegetables and fruits for the farmers market. I was also excited to find a really nice kinetic sand set, 3 bags of sand in handsome carrying case with lots of accessories (molds, rolling things) for 5.00. It was a good day, a super quick stop, but I was glad to find exactly what I was looking for! I also scanned the books super quick and got a cute Maurice Sendak book, Creepy Carrots (a book all kids love) and DreamSnow by Eric Clarle. I am sorry you are not feeling well, eastcoastpea.

Came away empty handed both times. Just nothing that interested me. Noticing that the prices seem to still be creeping upwards. Since I'm in the midst of a major round of decluttering/purging, it wasn't too much of a let down to not find anything. Less guilt!

I bought a beautiful children's pop up bible story book at goodwill. I didn't look carefully at it, and when I got home, I discovered most the pages were torn. Yesterday, I made a birthday card out of the 1st page. It is crazy, but fun. I might make some more from the rest of the book.
