I'm pretty sure I learned about OhLife here. It is an online diary of sorts that gave an email reminder each day. Answer the email and you have a diary entry. I was able to include pictures and everything. Yay.
They have a text download option for entries already there, but they are shutting down the site on October 4th. That's 2 weeks!
What are your recommendations for an online diary? I want to be able to look back and see when I did stuff, and also remember that I did stuff. This is a little too personal for a blog, KWIM?

I posted this on my blog earlier today. I asked for suggestions for a replacement and will let you know if I get any. I'm old school; I just write things down in my paper dayplanner, LOL.

Do a blog, but make it private, so no one can see it.

Microsoft Word/Works Not online but then you never have to worry about the site closing. You do have to enter your own date.
Do a blog but set it to private so no one can see it and don't share the link.
eta: blogger allows for no publishing to search engines and a restricted followers list that requires you list them in order for them to view it. Just leave the list empty.

I love Oh Life. The big advantage to me was the daily reminder. If I happened to be on my computer when the e-mail message came in, I would quickly write up my day. Otherwise I wouldn't have thought of writing a journal entry at all.
I downloaded all my entries last night. Despite the many times I would skip days or weeks in a row, my 40-some entries give a really great snapshot of the last six months of my life. I am so glad for those Oh Life prompts.
Any suggestions on setting up a prompt some other way?

If you happen to use a Mac or iPad, try Day One. It's a wonderful journaling app. And since it's not an online service, but software that you control, you don't have to worry about losing your content if the service shuts down.

I used OhLife for a while, but haven't used it in over a year. I've seen Day One and am definitely intrigued by it, but part of me really loves a paper journal. (Weird, because everything else I do is digital, and I don't have any problems with that. Of course, if I'm actually USING the paper journal, what good is it?) For those of you that use Day One, do you have to buy separate apps for both your phone and Mac, or does one purchase cover both?

I love the Day 1 app too. I like to use it on vacation to remember what I did each day. It was easy to use and I liked how you could include photos.

What about an App? I use Momento, you can tag and add photos. It allows sorting by tags and a few options for downloading or printing . No reminders, but it's on my phone home page so it's visible all the time.

I saw the email about this. I really like Oh Life, so easy just to reply to the reminder email. What a shame it is closing. I think I will just go back to a paper , handwritten journal.

Another Day One user. I love the app. I love that I can use is across all my Mac devices and everything stays sync'd. I love that at the end of the year I can export all entries (words, photos, URLs, etc.) into a PDF for later reference. I don't see Day One going away anytime soon.

Maybe try Evernote. You can use it on your computer or phone. It's a place for you to store your own personal notes. I think you can set up a reminder on the app.

Hey all! I'm a fellow OhLife refugee. I was crushed to hear that they were shutting down. However, I'm also a programmer. I got together with a programmer/designer friend of mine, and we built an OhLife replacement. It's called Trailmix: www.trailmix.life/pages/ohlife-alternative. It acts exactly like OhLife did. We haven't added any new features except one: we charge a small monthly fee. We're doing this so that we can keep the service running for many years into the future. It's great to have my daily journaling tool back again. I hope you might like it too. I'm happy to answer any questions (and would love your feedback!) -Ben

I am another that uses day one. I would also forget if it didn't remind me to journal!

I set up a new email address - e.g. journal@emailprovider.com
Set a normal reminder on my phone and I can send an email with my entry and the date in the subject line. Logging into the email account gives me all the entries. It's not quite as easy but close enough...

I built dayjot.com, an alternative to OhLife. The hosted version is paid only ($1/month) with a 1 month free trial to avoid another OhLife-esque shutdown scenario, but you can always run it yourself since it's open source (https://github.com/marbemac/dayjot).
