I’m going to the Scrapbook Expo in Akron, Ohio in four weeks. This is my third or fourth year going. I always go by myself, take classes, shop, and go home. I don’t have any local friends who scrapbook so I’ve never done any of the crops (although I know I can go alone—by the way, do many people do that or is it mostly all established groups?).
Anyway, I’m looking at the Thursday evening Make and Take. Here is the description:
So, can someone help me understand exactly what this is? Is it basically a crop? Do they demo and give you things to work on and most people exclusively work on those? Or do you bring a bunch of your own stuff and there are a few things they give you to work on in between? I just have no idea and if I sign up for it, I want to make sure I have the correct expectations and that I co e prepared for the evening.
Thanks!

I am attending the Mesa, AZ Stamp and Scrapbook expo next week! I have been attending the Mega Make and Take for the last few years. To answer your questions: Yes, it is a crop. You will have from 3pm to 5pm to work on your own projects. Then the sponsors will come in every 30 minutes or so to demo a project (you will be provided with the supplies and color brochure to complete the project). Usually the sponsors will bring some "exclusive deals" from their booth so you can shop that night too. There will be prizes given out throughout the evening. You will have time to work on your own projects until closing time, after the sponsors are through demonstrating (which takes a few hours). It's fun and you'll stay busy. Consider yourself lucky to have a ticket to the Mega Make and Take. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg)

Spot on hellothere! This was my third year attending the Orlando one, and I wasn't too sure about the Mega Make N Take our first year, but we had a blast! We got to get out of our normal box and try some new things! We always take the beginning of Thursday to set up our table (we do reserve ours for the whole weekend) and get comfortable for the night's festivities!

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like a lot of fun! Do you see lone scrappers like me at these events? I won’t be an oddball all by myself, will I? I probably haven’t been to a crop in at least 10 years. Figuring out what to bring and how much will be a challenge.

The Make and Take is always fun. You just show up with your little bags of tools to participate (scissors, tape, etc.) Most everything in the kits are prepared ahead for easy assembly. It moves pretty fast, with just enough time to work on the kits, or there might be some that you're not able to finish. No need to bring something to work on in between. In the past, it's been mostly cards, each with a special feature technique, a few embellishments, and a couple of page layouts, maybe 10 different things. The vendors for each one usually have the featured products on sale at side table in the room after each demo.
Everyone is really friendly, so you don't need to feel awkward about if you go alone - lots of people do. The presenters are positive and enthusiastic.
A lot of people come set up for their weekend crop that day, especially the groups. The ones that are there for the weekend might crop instead of participating in the Make and Take, but most are there for the event.
A few years ago, I started doing the just the crops. I've always gone alone, but have met people there to share and reserve a table for the next day. It's pretty relaxed and low-key, with lots of time to focus on getting things done. Something to consider if you want to do even more at the Expo.
ETA: If you want to go early and bring projects to work on, that will work too. When I've done the Make and Take, I just showed up to do that only, without any of my other stuff.

I found some recent YouTube videos where past Expos are highlighted and I learned a lot watching them.

I just went the Expo a few weeks back. This was my 2nd year doing the Make n Take. Honestly I didn't think it was for me initially, but I actually do enjoy it. I do the Friday crop as well so I feel like it sorta kicks me off in the right direction to get my crafty mojo working.
I have gone to the Expo & crop 4 times alone (including make n take and classes) and I never have a problem. At the make n take this year I was sitting at a whole table by myself and woman came and sat across from me, we chatted a bit. Then another woman joined us a little later and we had some casual chatter, mind you I am not a social person by any means, but I always have fun and appreciate being with like minded crafters.
Some people just use the time to crop and not do any of the projects. I prefer to just bring light supplies, tool caddy, and I bring something alternative to do like coloring images. This year I ended up just working on the projects bcz the best part is the vendors bring in some product and it usually is the best shopping deals of the show.
A majority of the projects are cards. Queen & Co. does a shaker card, there were a few others where they give you the pieces and you mostly put together and use some glitter pens, etc. I like the Craft Fantastic projects, which is the jewelry using the glass pieces on top of designs. There were 3 companies doing scrapbook layouts, one was disney/mickey theme, one 6x6 grillin' theme (hot dog), and one like a mini booklet about scrapbooking. But you can use the supplies how you see fit. Sometimes if I think I have another use for it, I won't complete the project. Like bcz I went to disney, I just saved the mickey diecuts we assembled to use on different layout later. My fav thing this year was the Diamond Dotz project which was cool to learn something new. I know sometimes the themes change and if it's in a few weeks they may curtail things to be more fall theme or even holiday.
I think you will enjoy it and by no means will you feel odd! I love seeing everyone's supplies and what type of storage they use, it really is a great time. I advise taking cash bcz it is quicker at the vendors than waiting in line for credit.
I've been meaning to put up a video review of projects, but haven't gotten to it yet. If I do I'll come back here and update.
Go! You will have a good time.

I never even thought to look for You Tube videos! I looked some up and between those and all of the comments on here, I decided to go! It looks like a lot of fun and some opportunities for great sales.
I’ll probably bring some light scrapbooking, but plan on mostly working on the projects. I’m excited! For someone who rarely scraps and is trying to get their mojo back, I’m hoping the expo weekend will get me moving. It will be a packed weekend. I’m doing the make and take extravaganza all evening on Thursday and then between Friday and Saturday I am signed up for NINE classes. I’ll barely have time to squeeze in shopping, but I’m sure I’ll manage! I appreciate you all chiming in and helping me decide.

jackie have a great time. I am an Expo addict and go to two different ones each year. I always do the make and take crop. Sometimes I like the projects, sometimes I don't but it helps me get out of my comfort zone and I think mostly it is a good value for the money. Last year I started at a table by myself, was joined by a group of three others and this year they invited me to sit with their group of 7! Going next month to Sacramento and get to meet up with gramma for the Friday and Saturday crops.
