Congratulations to your DH! How long did it take him to build it? What is the destination for the inaugural flight? It took him 2 years to build. We’ve been flying in it for about a year but it wasn’t painted. This now feels like its a completed project. I honestly don’t remember where we went first, we’ve been so many places.

What an amazing accomplishment! Congratulations to him! I think it wonderful that you are both going to use his plane to fly off to your adventures wherever they may be. How exciting!
Some people love adventure. They spend their lives learning all they can with an amazing goal in the end. This was probably the OP's husband's goal long ago. That he'd someday build his own plane one day and use it to fly to wherever he wanted and have the time of his life. Now it's come true. He will do this now with his wife-how amazing and wonderful is that?
Other people care content to stay at home and live their lives in comfort and what they see as safety. That's fine if that's what makes them tic. But it's rude to squash someone else's dream when it's come true by mentioning repeatedly how home made planes "slam into the ground".

I also wasn't aware that we always have to agree that everything is a fabulous idea just because someone posts about it. This isn't the princess fairy unicorn board where everything is perfect and no-one ever has a differing opinion. It's called real life and in real life people sometimes think your ideas are crazy and say so. I am just as free to respond that I wouldn't let my husband do it, as you are to encourage the Russian Roulette (3 now)

My husband is helping a friend build one. He has an A&E license and used to work on those kind of planes all the time for a living. He did that in the Air Force and is very meticulous. Both he and friend are also machinist who have to be very precise in their work though both are retired now. Both of them are very safety conscious. They know what they are doing and I would not hesitate to get in a plane my husband built and was flying.
Just knowing how to fly and how to build a plane is not all it takes to be a safe pilot. It takes a mindset of safety and responsibility. There are plenty out there without it. Not saying the OP's husband is one way or another, just saying that maybe that is why some home built planes end up crashed.
ETA: OOps let me climb down off my high horse and say Congratulations! to the OP. It looks like adventure and fun are in you future. Enjoy it!

I am just as free to respond that I wouldn't let my husband do it, as you are to encourage the Russian Roulette (3 now) I was raised with the saying, "if you don't have anything nice to say, say nothing at all". No obviously not everyone has to agree on everything. What a boring world it would be if we did that! Of course everyone has a right to an opinion. It's how you state things and the words you use. You could have said, "I've heard planes built by people aren't safe. Are you worried about flying in it?" See how differently that comes across vs. what you wrote about homemade planes slamming into the ground? So yes, in my humble opinion you were rude to the OP because of the words you used to state your opinion.

You could have said "I've heard planes built by people aren't safe. Are you worried about flying in it?" Ah no I could NOT have said that, because it's not what I meant, not what I wanted to know, nor is it my opinion on the topic...it's your version of what you think I meant...and it's wrong. Therefore I could not have written that because it is different to what I meant. linkand google Jessica Dubroff. I called her parents irresponsible back in 1996. I wonder what her father says now about allowing his daughter to pursue her dream? With that I'm bowing out. Not going to derail this thread any further, I said what I meant...and despite the handslap, that remains unchanged. Everyone else is of course free to continue to encourage this (predictably dangerous) activity.

That is just so cool!!
Interesting that there are other comments about building planes.
Yeah and I thought you meant a model plane at first.
Must be so neat to say, let's go to this restaurant 1000 miles away!!

Congrats to your husband on such a wonderful accomplishment. That is a beautiful plane! I am currently in A&P school and love it, can't imagine building my own plane though! May you both have many fun adventures flying it!
