Holy moly! Cnn article
This is the first I read of it. And all I can think is that automation is going to take thousands of jobs from real people. And walmart has partnered with Microsoft.

I have questions.. lol What's to stop a person who doesn't have the app to walk into the store? Who is cleaning up after people? People can be pigs in stores. Pick stuff up and leave it somewhere else. Cold food left on a shelf.. If there isn't at least one person in there, who is cleaning up? Someone drops a bottle of pop? Is there someone cleaning that up? Just wondering. They said there isn't a single employee in the store....

Kind of makes you wonder what people will be doing for entry level jobs - so many are being phased out. Manufacturing left decades ago to and of course many of those have increased automation as well.

I heard of a store similar to this in, I think, NYC. My first thought was what if someone is with you without a smartphone, do they have to wait outside? Do you leave your kids outside??

We have a convenience store in our building like this. Code to get in, shop for your stuff, scan it and use your smartphone or thumbprint to pay. Cameras everywhere. Works well.

Can someone come in with you if they don't have their own code? And by someone, I mean a friend who happens to be with you.

I try to not do things that cost people jobs. I don't typically do self check because it cost cashiers jobs. I do use clicklist because some has to shop, answer the phone, and bring my groceries.
So, I would try not to shop at this type of a place.

You can browse the merchandise, scan it for pricing, etc. But you can't purchase unless you have an account already set up through the phone app or via their website.

I’ve read about it recently. I think it’s going to be the way of the world considering how much trouble brick and mortar retailers are having finding enough people to work those jobs. Today I had to run a few errands and literally every store I went into or passed by had big “Now Hiring” signs up. It’s been the same at every fast food place we’ve been in for at least a year. Some will interview applicants on the spot. They just can’t get enough people who want those jobs because the pay and hours are crap especially heading into the holiday season where many stores are open around the clock. The wages just haven’t gone up enough for people to want to do those jobs.

At the Amazon Go in Seattle, there are people that work there. There are a couple of people that stand by the turnstiles to explain how everything works. There also people that stock the shelves as well as people preparing the food that is sold in the store. In the photo from the CNN article, you can see windows on the right side of the door, inside the windows is the kitchen that preps the food so you can see several chefs and prep cooks working.
The store isn’t a huge grocery store but more the size of a small Starbucks. Hard for people to make much of a mess without it being noticed.

One just opened in downtown Chicago. There are people there, just no cashiers to check you out. Granted the store is new so I am sure there were extra employees and going forward there won’t be as many but most convenient stores only have a couple of people working in them anyway. Think of a 7-11 or store that’s part of a gas station.
The entrance is somewhat like getting on the El. You have to scan their app in order for the gate to open. The app has a credit card linked to it. Can someone jump the gates? Certainly but considering every item you take off the shelf or put back is tracked, I am sure people entering and exiting without scanning will set off some kind of alarm
You just walk around the store, pick-up the items you want and walk out of the store. A receipt appears on your phone app and you also get an email version. It’s all very seamless and very fast. Plus, the price of many items is pretty cheap for a downtown convenience like store.
I love the store and will frequent it often.

We went to the amazon store in Seattle. I get why people think that this is taking jobs away but it’s just really not. At the amazon store in Seattle the place was packed with employees helping customers, answering questions,, handing out bags, stocking shelves and helping people get in the store. Just redirecting employees to other positions. Jen

The Seattle store has many people working there. Some by the entrance to make sure they can answer questions, or help you if you don’t have the app, they tell you how to get it and show you how the store works. There are people restocking shelves and people in the kitchen making the to go meals and meal kits. I don’t see how this would work in a bigger setting. So no, no cashier jobs, but there are jobs there for sure.

I'm all for it! My sister went to one in Seattle and she lived it. So fast and easy.
