m.huffpost.com/us/entry/us_5bb6d9d0e4b01470d050121e/amp"The politically outspoken singer and actress alluded to a 1972 song written by Yoko Ono and John Lennon, “Woman is the Nigger of the World.” She tweeted: “Women, are the n-word of the world.” Raped, beaten, enslaved, married off, worked like dumb animals; denied education and inheritance; enduring the pain and danger of childbirth and life IN SILENCE for THOUSANDS of years They are the most disrespected creatures on earth. I could write paragraphs upon paragraphs about the offensiveness of referencing this quote, not to mention Midler’s statement as a whole, which essentially erased black women while using the history of black pain and the awful legacy of the N-word as props."

From the article:
Midler needs to take a gander at White Fragility, I can send her my copy when I'm done. The fact that she's playing innocent and ignorant at the reaction she got - no one is falling for that.
LOL
Social media somewhat unfortunately gives everyone the platform to make a global ass of themselves.

Midler claims her tweet came from a distraught place as she thought about the Kavanaugh hearings. Well if society is no longer moved by the tears of white women, what do you think that might mean for black women, imagine how distraught many of us might feel? Historically, the emotions of white women moved white men to do some pretty heinous things but now we see 45 and many of his constituents laughing at her pain, declaring it a "very dangerous time for young men in America". Believe Black Women

I'm not really sure she can compare the two. I would agree that black women have gotten the shitty end of the stick for a long time. Except in looks. I swear every black woman in my town could be a supermodel.

Beautiful =/= sexual. And, while I would love to have a meaningful conversation on the subject, I’m afraid that’s not what I would get.

And in a thread about rape and believing black women mentioning how attractive the black women in your community happen to be, is, in fact, a form of sexualization. The last thread I started about black women and rape....everyone doubted the validity of the research. I highly doubt you'd love to have a meaningful conversation given the response level my threads usually get but I also have no problem with ignoring your dig that the problem lies with me. Have a good weekend.

Note freebird response in a previous thread. I don't have such an ego that I think I'm the only black person you can have race-related conversations with but its glaringly disingenuous to act like it is me and not you that make this type of dialogue impossible. I respectfully shared with you how your supermodel comment could be seen as the sexualization of black women in a thread about rape and the erasure of black women from the MeToo movement. Take from it what you will. I once pulled up to a gas station completely full of people. I saw a black woman kicking another black woman - stilletto heel first. She had her down on the ground kicking her with her heel. The place was packed. *I* was the person that walked over and stopped her. I started screaming at the woman and she took off with her boyfriend (also black, fyi). I stayed with the woman on the ground until the cops came and helped her. They were co-workers btw. The only person that approached me after was another black man who said "I thought it was someone beating up on his girlfriend." Like that was acceptable. Yeah, so the study really means shit to me. But I'm just some racist white woman though soooooo....

www.nbcnews.com/think/amp/ncna917386I just read a comment under Senator Susan Collins Instagram account that reads: White women are getting the America they deserve. James Baldwin: “People who shut their eyes to reality simply invite their own destruction, and anyone who insists on remaining in a state of innocence long after that innocence is dead turns himself into a monster.”

WTF is wrong with her? She is too old to be that stupid! She's the same age my mom was when her dementia started to worsen. And my mom lost her filter and would say some really offensive things around that time, then backpedal like crazy if anybody called her on it. Not that this is what's going on, but at her age brain issues, medication side effects, and minor infections can cause people to act out in uncharacteristic ways.

I was shocked when I saw that she had posted the original tweet and her “rationale”. Both stupid. Both completely unhelpful.

I just said that when my mom was the same age she started popping off at the mouth with offensive shit too and it turned out to be an early sign of dementia. Why the handslap? Did I imply you were defending her? What in my post states that I was defending her? I simply explained that people her age can come out with really offensive comments due to some underlying cause. How is that a defense? It's a possible explanation that I witnessed play out in my own family.

I read it as absolutely beautiful. I’m sure you feel supermodel means oversexualized. That's the great thing about having a lot of voices. You may disagree with my view and provide your own. Being viewed as beautiful (super-model or just super developed) PLUS strong enough to fight off attackers always harmed black girls. And then there is ugly and strong which is even worse. This is a lived experience. The links (in blue fittingly) are someone else wording it more eloquently and most often provided. As I told freebird you can make a choice to take information or leave it. What choice do you think is most strong a theme in threads like these? Additionally, if Missouri is a state where black people ought to practice caution even visiting, place yourself in the shoes of a super model black woman!?! You're still standing in shit right?

I can't give Bette the dementia pass. Too many white celebrity women have such messy feminism that is not intersectional, and when challenged they double down. It's embarrassing and shitty and we need to do better and expect better.
She messed up BIG. She needs to shut up and listen until she's ready to speak for ALL women in a way that doesn't denigrate women of color.

But it's no reason to handslap someone who says "hey I witnessed this personally, and it turned out to be something medical". It feels like you are dismissing the ignorance and offensiveness of what Bette Middler said when you continually try to paint this as a medical issue. Which, by the way, no one on the internet is qualified to diagnose, anyway. Why is it so important to you to minimize what she said? Because of her age? I find that kind of insulting, actually. Again, I'm sorry for what your mom went through, and for what your family went through with her. I can't imagine. But I think your personal experience is coloring your perspective here.

Considering that Bette JUST completed a long and successful run playing Dolly on Broadway (for which she won a Tony) I highly doubt that dementia is at play.

I swear every black woman in my town could be a supermodel. When talking about how poorly black women have been treated in our society and then to add but they are beautiful! Over sexualization or not. It adds nothing to the actual conversation and instead seems to be demeaning. It's the internet... so we all bring our biases to what we read. I read your comment like this: Yes black woman have a tough time of it but they sure are pretty. It is just not the right time to discuss how beautiful the women in your town are.
