I keep waking up anywhere from 3:30 am to 5 am and not being able to sleep The problem started while I was recovery from surgery so i'm not sure if it's related to that. I spent 2 nights in the hospital, the first being pretty closely monitored (woken often lol.) I slept throughout the days some while in the hospital. After being released the first week or two I was looking to sleep by 7-8 pm, I was exhausted. It's been 5 weeks now and I feel good. I'm going to bed at a normal time, trying to stay up some even though i'm exhausted because i'm up so darn early every day! Anyone have any advice on how to sleep in some? I'm one of those people who lies her head on the pillow and is out cold so I feel like most advice I know is for getting to sleep not staying asleep.

I've been there with the unreasonably early waking, and all I can tell you is what I've noticed. I was having trouble falling asleep sometimes, so I started taking the melatonin that we have around for DD. Everything I've heard is melatonin GETS you to sleep, not KEEPS you asleep. But, in my experience, the nights I take it at bedtime, I don't wake up until maybe 10 minutes before the alarm (which for me is 4:20-5:00 depending on the day), instead of 2 or more hours early. I don't know why it works, but it seems to - and the last few nights, I haven't taken it and have been up early again. Anyway, it might be worth a try for you. Either way, good luck!

I've been a horrible sleeper lately. I just can't turn my brain off so I have a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep. I was waking up around 2am every morning and not being able to go back to sleep. My DD had me order her one of those weighted blankets. She loved hers so much that I ordered one for me. I have never slept so good in all of my life! I fall asleep within minutes and sleep all night. For instance, this morning my dogs woke me up around 3 needing to go outside. I let them out and figured I wouldn't be able to go back to sleep before my alarm went off. I did fall back asleep and woke up to my alarm. I still can't believe how much this blanket helps. I am sorry you can't sleep and I hope you find a resolution soon. Hugs!

I have heard so many successful weighted blanket stories. I would give that a try.

I don't have a solution either, I am in the same boat.
I've always been a deep through the night sleeper. Like a train going through my room wouldn't wake me. A little over a year ago I started waking up frequently, and for just long enough that my brain would start in on things. Then I'd wake up and have to pee. blah blah blah. I started using Zquil this spring. That works till about 430am then the waking up starts. For the last week I tried melatonin 10mg. That was awful! I woke up so many more times and would be wide awake. And I had weird dreams on it. So I went back to the Zquil last night. Took a dose and a half. Slept soundly till 530am.

How are your vitamin D levels? I started taking 5,000 IU a day and my sleep quality improved drastically. Might be a place to start.

Just pulling up a heavy, 100% cotton bedspread helps me to fall back asleep.
What helps me more than any pill I've tried is to listen to talk radio. (I use a small "walkman" radio that has no lights). I listen to the "Coast to Coast AM show". The topic differs each night and somehow the all the talking keeps my own thoughts from racing and helps me to get sleepy again.

mellowyellow does that heavy blanket make you hot? I can't stand to be hot when I'm sleeping.

I'm kind of going through the same thing. I had gallbladder surgery a few weeks ago and since then I can't sleep to save my life. I always had trouble going to sleep, I've tried everything and nothing ever helped. I take Nyquil every night before bed and it's helped me get to sleep. But since surgery, even that isn't working. I'm wanting to sleep my entire day away, but once bedtime comes I can't do it. If I do fall to sleep easily, then I am up a few hours later. I will be watching this thread for any ideas I haven't tried yet.

mellowyellow does that heavy blanket make you hot? I can't stand to be hot when I'm sleeping. Well to be quite honest....I just started sleeping with it once DH went back offshore for 2 weeks. We always have the AC down low so I was very comfortable. I plan on trying it once DH gets back home but something tells me I will get hot. LOL!

We have these gravity blankets and they are amazing!! We bought the original ones when they were on kickstarter and then this summer bought the cooling ones. They are incredible and I love sleeping under it! We each have our own I think our original ones were the 20 lbs and then we got 25lbs ones. Now you can just get a second duvet cover for them to switch between regular and cooling. I have noticed for me that the less sugar I have the better I sleep. I can't do caffeine, so sugar is my drug of choice when I'm sleepy. So when I limit that I sleep much better.

I will be watching this thread for any ideas I haven't tried yet. Oh boy. I hate to tell you about this but I had my gallbladder removed 6 years ago and I haven't slept on my own (non mediated) since then. I take the highest dose of Lunesta and 75mg of Trazadone to sleep and even that does not give me a decent nights sleep. Currently, I am sleeping in 1 1/2 to 2 hour blocks for only about 5 hours of sleep a night. Once I wake beyond 3 a.m., I can't fall back to sleep.
I've taken my morning medication at night (thinking I was taking my night medications) on accident twice and both times, I didn't fall asleep the entire night. I've also not slept at all many times even after taking my two sleep meds.
I feel very certain that that surgery did something to my brain that irreversibly broke my body's ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. Life changing.

I've been a GREAT sleeper until I reached my 40's and then needed Ambien for a few years (since I was suffering with medical side effects from not sleeping). Did the trick. I switched to Temazepam (actually an antidepressant, but could be used to aid in sleeping) and it works pretty well.....
As for DH, I'd LOVE to know if he ever slept well!!! As long as I've known him (10+ years), he's been a horrible sleeper. He has many medical issues and is on tons of meds, is overweight, has COPD/sleep apnea, etc.... He'll fall asleep like he's in a sugar-coma, even mid-sentence, and then once he's in bed, he doesn't sleep for too long. 2-3 hours max! He'll get up to go to the bathroom and automatically walk out of our bedroom, into the livingroom to watch tv or go on his laptop. I have to WAKE UP and tell him, "Try getting back in bed, NOW" and sometimes he falls back to sleep. So I believe some of it is habit.
I've tried white noise. We keep our home very cold and cozy at night. I have nice, soft, fresh cotton sheets and a neat bed, nightly. I remind him to get out of his clothes and put on something comfy and get into bed. It helps me......... Him? Not so much! Nothing really works for him.
If he's eating a good, healthy diet, he does seem to sleep a bit more. If he is busy all day and is exhausted (with no naps), then he does sleep a bit more. But getting him to sleep for 6+ hours straight? Almost impossible!!!!!!! Then there are the times he takes his Xanax and he'll sleep, but he'll continue to be exhausted for 24 hours!!!!!!! WTF?
It makes ME exhausted to wake up and be watching him, coming out to the livingroom and begging him to try getting back in bed. Ugh! He claims that sound makes him sleep (like the tv). Sorry, but I don't want noise or brightness in my room. It sets my migraines off. I gave him my old tiny iPod and that did buy me a couple of hours of straight sleep for him (I put on Colbie Caillat). He's spoken to his psychiatrist at the V.A. who increased his Paxil at night. At least it stopped his violent dreams.....
I hope that you find the answer!! For me, it's clean cotton sheets, a COLD room, silence, darkness and a full day of activities. My mind doesn't begin to review stress at night. I make ToDo lists and other lists so when I go to bed, I'm ready to just sleep! If you're not getting sleep in a few weeks, I'd talk to your PCP because I began to get sick over my lack of sleep. Ambien was a wonder for a couple of years...........

Does it make you feel hot? I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to use it in the summer here because it gets so hot. I'd have just as much issue sleeping with that blanket, as without, if it made me hot.

I chronically wake up at those times too. The simplest thing that seems to help me is strictly limiting my sugar intake like beaglemom mentioned. I suspect weighted blankets would help me too as I remember loving the thick heavy wool blanket I used as a teenager.

Waking up at 3 am is a low cortisol/adrenal issue. It's also a low magnesium issue. I started taking magnesium, along with the needed potassium and sodium to balance it, and I sleep so well now. I wake up rested now instead of dragging through the day. This link is the protocol I've followed. gotmag.org/how-to-restore-magnesium/
