I have a stack of stencils that I've never used. The Sketchy Saturday challenge made me get them out and try them. I used Oxide ink with the blending tool and I was surprised how easy it was! I really liked the end result and am now hunting for more stencils to use on my layouts. I have a honeycomb and a brick stencil, and just got a shiplap one in the Echo Park warehouse box.
I have some old ones that I used a long time ago when I first started scrapping, they are border stencils. I used chalk with those. I like the oxide ink better, it goes on smoothly and leaves a nice finish.
What is your favorite stencil that I need to add to my stash? Enable me!

I don't know when the last time I used a stencil was, but I do like the Tim Holtz ones that SB.com just got in. Not sure where I would actually use them though...

I like using stencils with Oxide inks. I also like to use them with paste. Or with Decofoil gel, which can then be foiled. Which stencils you get depends on what you use them for: girly pages & cards? Or masculine? Action shots or artistic representations? Do you want to stencil just random looking bits and pieces? Or whole backgrounds? There are some cool art journally stencils from Dylusions. The Crafters Workshop has a full range in sizes up to 12x12". I like to use the negatives from my diecuts as stencils. So if I cut out a Christmas tree for one card, I can stencil another one on the next card. Cs stencils aren't as sturdy as plastic, but I can usually get several uses if I am using ink.

I've recently got into stencils to use for card backgrounds. Am loving the effect!

I've tried them with a texture medium and my gelatos once, and I liked the way it came out even though it was messier than I'd hoped. And I've used them with chalks on background cardstock instead of ink sprays which gave a softer look. The Mickey ears are gelatos mixed with texture medium.

You can colour and blend with gelato’s, (or Tim’s or Vicki’s crayons I have heard), then cover with a stencil, and wipe with a baby wipe to remove the colour to get a lovely reverse design. I might have to try this on today’s card!

I was so sure I was going to have to scrub them!

I used two of them on this layout, a honeycomb one and a zigzag one... I do think they add a interesting background but I don't think I'm creative enough to "design" a background with them. For this one (my first layout using stencils and oxides) I just kinda inked them on there and called it done! I really like the one you did for your "Together" layout, grammadee. It looks so put together it looks like actual patterned paper!

Love the look of the stenciled ink on your page, MDscrapaholic! It gives a subtle dimension to the patterned paper. My "together" background was a messy process, but fun. I basically just plopped a stencil down, gave it a blast of mist, then moved it and splattered again. The mists leaked under the design, but I liked the look of it. I tried the gelato technique this morning, and it was really quick and easy. A LOT less mess than the spritzed one LOL. Coloured with gelato's. Spritzed with water and smeared the colour around. Dried quickly with a paper towel. Plopped the stencil on and gently wiped with a baby wipe. Moved the stencil a couple of times to get the design I wanted. The stencil didn't get coloured at all by the gelato's, and the baby wipe picked up the colour to leave a nice crisp edge. CT 13 warm wishes by Gramma Dee, on Flickr the funny thing is, I covered most of it up on the card, but it was so quick and easy I can do a bunch more and show more of the design if I choose. Might do that now, with some different stencils, while the gelato's are out.... I can put them into my "blue Christmas" kit.

I love stencils and have a huge collection of them, but when it comes to using them I mostly forget about them ...but if I don't I like to use the background/pattern ones with inks/watercolour pencils or crayons and the 'object' ones as templates for cutting out embellishments.

I love my stencils and want more. I have some in my cart at Ali Express... This is one of my favourites - I used it on my "Canadian Climbers" page last month - I find it versatile even though it's so...obvious?

I've just started using them. I only have a few. I love them with Distress Oxides and with spray mists.
I'll have to try that Gelato technique!

No I never use them. Back in the late '90's when I first started scrapping I had some stencils but since then I have never used them.

i love to buy stencils but am not so great at using them! and i tend to buy similar ones multiple times, like i have lots of different types of dots or hearts. i did use my oxides with a stencil for this background XO by sadkid, on Flickr but i tend to use them with texture paste. i will occasionally spray but i usually screw that up somehow so it's not often i'll attempt it.

I cut a few stencils with my Cricut last night. Love them! I use them mostly with inks, especially Distress Inks, but I've also used them with spray inks and acrylic paint. Here's a card I made in a class I took with Ken Oliver recently. We used his inks, which are very similar to Distress Inks.

Affiliate LinkI have found that the default settings in Design Space for stencil film work really well. The only change I make is that I use the deep cut blade instead of the regular blade.

I use stencils but only with embossing paste so far. I love the Dina Wakley ones cause they're really thick plastic so you get a really nice thick paste on there which gives loads of dimension. Prima also does some really cool 12x12 ones which are great if you want to do a whole background of paste. Most of the ones I have are smaller so I have to do shifts to get a whole background pasted! And of course, Tim Holtz does some fabulous patterns too.

I love the effect of using paste with stencils but when I make cards, I usually make multiple copies of the same card. I get frustrated having to clean my stencil after every use, so I use them less than I'd like.

I recently discovered the Dylusions line and I'm OBSESSED! I love all of the stencils! I haven't used them in scrapbooking yet, just art journaling with paint & spray ink. I really want to try texture paste next.

When I cut my stencils, I use either acetate, which can tear, or stencil blanks. There is a link a few posts above this one.

I forgot to mention that most of my stencils came from Walmart I think by the acrylic paint. I got a pack of several different patterns in a pack for just a few dollars
