I have taken zolpidem for 14 years. The other day I tried to get it renewed and was told I can't get it till the 26th. That's 2 weeks away. The dr said it is now against government rules to refill a prescription early. I have been refilling it 3 or 4 days early all the time so this 3 months cycle is supposedly way too early. I've tried not taking anything now for 2 days and have not gotten much if any sleep. HELP what can I do? I know take Melatonin but that does not work. I've tried Alteril but that made my liver enzymes over the normal so I can't take that either. Thanks if you can help

Melatonin doesn't do it for me either, but I did find a product called Somno Pro that worked for me. It had melatonin in it, and I already knew that didn't have much effect on me, so I tried another ingredient in it and it turned out that Tryptophan works great for me. And I have no hangover feel from it.
Hope you get your sleep straightened out. It really makes such a difference in how I view my day.

I don't know if this would work for you, but if I can't get to sleep, I take a swig or two or ZzzzQuil. It makes me drowsy and keeps me asleep.

In the U.K. GPs rarely prescribes keeping tablets at all. I beggedfjr she when I was diagnosed without cancer the second time on top of something ehse reslky stressful in my life- GP refused. MY surgeon luckily understood my desperation but even she would only prescribe 2 weeks. I'm amazed you have been on the for so long and they still work , but I even more surprised they would arbitrarily leave you without for two weeks 😳

I've had the same. When I was desperate I used travel sickness tablets that made me drowsy.

My doctor suggested Benadryl when he thought I'd have issues with sleeping while taking Prednisone briefly.
CBD oil might also help.

I have had so much trouble getting my doctor, the old one and the new one, to fill this. In part it's due to new regulations. Like you, I haven't slept in two days and I'm exhausted and miserable. When I try to sleep I just slip into a sort of waking sleep where I hear everything but am having all sorts of terrible dreams that feel real. I'm in and out of a light sleep all night long and it feels like I spent all night working.
I hate this. Nothing else helps me sleep and I've been taking it for years, so I wish I could just get my damn prescription already.

Please be careful ladies. Lack of sleep affects so many things and it can be unsafe just trying to go about your regular day sometimes. Things like walking, stairs, driving. Also, be careful when you wake up after you finally do sleep, especially if your sleep for a long time or very deeply. Sit up slowly and stay there for a while. Don't stand without help. Even if you think you're okay, give it a few more minutes and brace yourself. ~ signed lots of experience missing days upon days of sleep during manic episodes

Ugh - I feel your frustration. I haven’t slept well for the past year. Very often I only sleep for an hour or two. I’ve finally made an appointment at the dr, but I’m in the U.K. so I’m not expecting anything to change:(

I take Nyquil every single night of my life. I have yet to find a doctor that will take my lack of sleeping seriously. I finally found one doctor who said if the nyquil is working to keep taking it. I was concerned about taking the other medications that are in it if I didn't need them. He said it was fine, so I keep doing it. It's been years, like 13 years I've been taking it and it helps a lot. I've tried benadryl and melatonin and never had any help from those.

Every 90days we got through that with the Lunesta/Esziplicone is the generic one, now. It's the only thing that works after several trials, a sleep study etc.. never go into a full sleep even with a pacer. I like the Lunesta because it shuts your brain off. Sometimes I'll take a benedryl with it as I'm a mouth breather so it help keep me a little clearer. But every 90 I don't sleep for four days with the new rules. That part is just broke. Some it has to do with soo many surgeries. I'm not on a lot of medication. But yes I too have noticed with Predisone or zpack type stuff it's worse sometimes have to take two. I know some peas don't like it. Dh doesn't take it every day but when he has trouble. He says he gets a metalic taste and he can tell it's kicking in so he will crash. I surprisingly have no side effects. Ambien was scarier. I think they only sell the generic form. I take the 3mg which i believe is the highest. I hope you can find something that helps. Not sleeping affects everything so i'ts scary to to go too long! Here's to happy nights for you!!

Have they learned nothing from the opioid epidemic?
You can't prescribe serious medications to people long-term and then suddenly over-regulate them, restricting patients from needed doses, without serious problems ensuing.
I'm really sorry to hear this for all y'all who are/will be suffering.

I'm really sorry to hear this for all y'all who are/will be suffering. This 100%! I am really sick of this shit! Medication should be between the patient and his/her doctor. That's it! It's bad enough that we in this country have to pay so much of our money for medical insurance but then to have the government or the insurance companies decide when or if to fill a prescription insane. You just can't f* with people's lives like this. I'm so sorry for what you are going through cahwoo. Something like this happened to me too recently. My health insurance (for which we pay $1,500) a month for and that's just for DH and I decided I couldn't fill my migraine medication for Zomig generic which I take when I get a migraine for another month and a half. I get a migraine every other day. I have had chronic migraines since June of 2017. They just cut me off suddenly 2 weeks ago. Thank goodness my health care worker who I see at my neurologist's office-she's a PA-C encouraged me month's ago to apply for my medical marijuana card in Maryland. If she hadn't done that, and I hadn't applied, gotten accepted and been using it for a month to find out what strains worked for me I would have been up shit's creek (please pardon my French on this post but I am livid about this). As it turned out I was able to turn to medical marijuana to kill the pain when I got the migraines. If I hadn't gone through the process and already had the card it would have taken a month to do that and I would have endured a month of unrelenting, horrid pain. But my point is-the insurance company didn't know about any of this. They simply didn't care-all they cared about were their profits. I'm paying my $1,500 a month so why can't I get my medication from them! Who are they to decide not to give it to me when my doctor says I need it? I have an appointment with my PA-C this week. Between this and the pre-existing conditions on the other thread-it's enough to make you so angry! Vote in November-that's all you can do. OP, I've taken Trazadone for years for sleep. I can get to sleep but I can't stay asleep. Maybe that's something you can switch to that they will fill?

I worry about this too. I've been on ambien for at least 8 years. I only take 5mg and I only take it Sun-Thur when I work. I stay off it for the weekend and on the weekend I don't sleep at all. I'm such a light sleeper and I'm constantly waking up all night long. I tried to stop taking it and take benadryl instead. I used to take benadryl for allergies without a problem but now when I take it my body does not settle down. I constantly jerk and can't stay still. My doctor said that is a side effect of the benadryl so now I can't take that. The ambien is not working the best for me. I can fall asleep but I can't stay asleep and melatonin doesn't work for me either. My need for sleeping medication came when I was working night shift and needed something to sleep during the day when I worked two nights in a row. Now I work day shift but can't sleep.

FYI The Kirkland Signature generic OTC sleep aid has the same active ingredient that is in NyQuil that makes you sleep without all the other stuff for aches, fever, cough, etc. It says it’s the same as Unisom. It might be worth trying if you don’t like taking all the other stuff you don’t need.

I'm dropping by my Drs office tomorrow, but I'll see if I can get some of this. I've only tried the diphenhydramine kind, which does not help me sleep. I'm almost certain this won't get resolved in a day. I'm so irritated with PCP offices and refills and the way you can't ever get anyone on the phone, you have to wait all day for a return call.

I get to sleep okay with those, but they don't last very long, maybe a few hours and then I'm back awake and have to retake it. I wake up with Nyquil, but not usually for very long. I'm guessing it's the alcohol or one of the other ingredients that helps me the most...just not exactly sure, but it works. Every now and then I try everything all over again and just can't get the same results, I wish they would work.

SUCCESS
I had to physically go to the office to ask if they had a physical script for me, she said no, let me find out what's going on, in the end I waited an hour and a half and had to be seen and pay a copay even though I was just seen as a new patient 3 weeks ago but I HAVE MY AMBIEN AND IT HAS REFILLS. I can't wait to go to bed tonight and not lie there in a state of semi-consciousness until 4AM, only to be woken 45 min later by my alarm.
Also, it was sent to the wrong Walgreen's, but that was an easy fix and a mere half hour wait. Lol I've really earned this one.

It took me a few times with Lunesta as well, she actually phoned it in for me because she wasn't in the office. The pharmacies here will fill it three days before but no more. Now it's just the pain meds. Now you have to call it in 24hrs before. They've changed it twice. I know it's not their fault. They can only do so much. But if it's stuff you've been taking or have tried I can't wrap my head around it. And yes I understand the sensitivity issue. We've personal losses from the opiod/addiction stuff. But it's crazy that you have to wait that long. And they have to triple check. Last time she gave me so much crap about the pain meds after surgery. Now it's 5day limit. I have another procedure on my legs next week. But fortunately the time works with the procedure. So I am more prepared, you learn to work around the schedules. But I totally understand the struggle. I wish you many happy sleeps. I liked the Ambein but I had more health risks so it was a little to scary. But I will do it if it has to be a fill in.. But Lunesta just shuts everything down. I should do a commercial for it! I hope the OP can find something too. Two days starts to get scary!

The latest one I ran into was that my insurance company would only pay for 15 pills for 25 days. Which would be great if someone could tell me WHEN I won't be able to sleep. The 2nd time this happened, the pharmacist offered a discount card, and I paid out of pocket for close to my copay! My doctor also doubled the dosage and told me to cut them in half in case I had problems filling it again. As a side note, I later learned the insurance company will pay for the full prescription for men.

This is what’s in the Costco sleep aid and also what is in NyQuil. ZzzzQuil has a different active ingredient.

Yep, that's due to newer guidelines that say women should only be given 5mg but men can have the full 10. Ridiculous. At least I haven't run into that situation, I've been taking 10mg for years. I REALLY feel bad for all of you who can't get pain meds! At least I don't have to suffer other than not sleeping. I know it's a struggle to get relief with pharmacies only filling a week at a time or whatever. I don't take pain meds but I know how hard the restrictions are on those with genuine pain.
