My challenges all involve a POP! Today’s challenge is to make something that POPS UP! A pop-up card, a card in a box, a card with a pop-up element on it, or anything else that physically pops up/off/out of your card (maybe even one of those wiggly bouncy things?) I tried to use this tutorial on SCS ( www.splitcoaststampers.com/resources/tutorials/popupboxcard/) but my cutting and scoring skills are REALLY BAD, so I used a Lawn Fawn die for a couple of my cards, and a free ScanNCut file (no longer online unfortunately) for another. If you have a scoring board and a trimmer you should be able to make a box card pretty easily with the SCS instructions unless you’re as measurement challenged as me. There was also a discussion of pop up elements you can DIY here: 2peasrefugees.boards.net/thread/82733/diy-craftingI’ve never tried a pop up before, but these cards were fun to create, and look a lot more difficult to make than they actually were  They're just a wee bit fiddly. The Halloween ones will make fun decorations, and my MIL is sure to love the colorful 80th birthday card. joblackford these are bloomin' brilliant! I love the Halloween ones, and the birthday one is so bright and cheerful. I made on pop-up box card a while back - I think it took me a whole day  I may be a while before I'm back with one...

Those are great box cards, joblackford, especially since it sounds like this is your first time making box cards. They can indeed be fiddly, but your Halloween box cards are delightful, and your MIL ought to love the adorable birthday one you made for her.

Your Halloween pop ups are really FUN, joblackford! And your mother-in-law will LOVE all that happiness popping out of the birthday card. I have done a box card, but only in a class from a kit. Not sure I am ready for that. But I just pulled out the easiest of my Karen Burniston die sets: the snowman twist pop up, so that will be my challenge for today. I think I will cut several of the snowmen so I can use them on front and back of this card, plus for a few more later. |

Here is my card. I cut the snowman circles for the pop up element on the inside from a card panel, and then spritzed that panel and tried to turn the negative into the image of a snowman for the front of the card. Had to cover up the places the circles didn't quite meet.  snowman pop up outside by Gramma Dee, on Flickr And here is the actual pop up part. The front was still wet when I took this photo, so I didn't get the whole inside, but I think you can get the idea. Well, it's too late now, I've spent all day on this since I wrote here and I ache so much I can barely type  But, here it is!!! because it was hard work  It's the inside bit I have the most trouble with; my hands don't manouevre well enough, my fingers aren't long enough to reach inside so I have to try and guesstimate where the pop up bits should be. Having said that I'm rather proud of this

JaneB, your box card looks awesome! I love the Groucho Marx glasses/nose!
grammadee, your pop up looks terrific, too! I have a die that does that kind of pop up, but I haven't tried it yet. Your snowman looks so cute popping out of that circle!

wow grammadee I love the way that you were able to use the negative piece on the front - no waste! And the whole thing came out beautifully. Lots of texture and shine. You seem to be making excellent progress on your Christmas cards! JaneB great card! I love how cute and colorful it is, and you even managed not to exceed the upper boundary of the card - I keep making my haunted houses too big and high so I'm going to need to custom make the envelopes. As for the fiddly aspect- I hope you didn't overdo it too badly. I realized it was a very technical paper challenge with a lot of demands on the fingers and no digital option. Sorry about that, and thank you for playing along. Hopefully the next few challenges will give your hands a break. |

joblackford, I assume we can use a die or a cutting file to make the basic box rather than a scoring board and trimmer?
I have started mine for the challenge, but I used a cutting file to make my basic box. I figured I should ask before I get any farther, in case I need to start over. I will be decorating it with stamped images.
I've done them by hand in the past using a scoring board and paper trimmer, but I have also used cutting files, too. Using a cutting file (or a die) to make the basic box is not only easier, but it is far more likely to fold neatly for going into an envelope.
I made my first box cards back in 2014. The last time I made a box card was in 2015, as a Valentine for my DH. I haven't made any since, so I am kind of excited for this challenge. It took me awhile to decide what to do for it.
I am hoping to get mine for the challenge finished today, but I have family coming tomorrow, so it might be next week before I finish coloring and cutting out the stamped images I am using for it.

scrapnnana absolutely do whatever works for you! I just wanted to make sure people knew that you don't need a die or machine to make one. It really does help though! Even with the die it wasn't so easy to get the thing folded properly.

Thanks, joblackford! I came across a video recently by Nichol Spohr. The way she does her box cards is so much easier, and everything lines up perfectly! I saw it and wondered why no one else does it this way. I tried it last night, and it worked like a charm. It was so much easier than the way I always made mine before. I had trouble finding the video, but I finally tracked it down. I am linking it here. It will make the box cards more fun for everyone to make because they are not so difficult to line everything up. Easier way to make box cards

scrapnnana your little scarecrow is wonderful! I love the corn field and the lovely fall papers you chose. The rounded corners on the card are a really nice touch too. Glad you were able to get him done in time. Thanks for sharing the video too - I'll definitely check that out. I used a couple of tricks that may be similar to what she shows after my first one came out wonky, and I also learned that Scor Tape may be strong but you really need to be sure of things when you use it - it allows for no wiggle room!

warrior1991 yay! I have no idea what those things are called, but they definitely count as a pop up element to me. I love your fishy, it's wonderfully gender neutral, and the pun is perfect! I made a bunch of "just keep swimming" and "turtley awesome" cards for hospitalized kids a while back, but never thought of telling them they're "fin-tastic!" I'll add that to my list.

I'm all for finding DIY ways to try out new techniques, especially stuff that I may only use once or twice. Jennifer McGuire has a video showing how to create a DIY pop-up feature using cardstock. They don't wiggle around like the real action wobblers, but her technique is awesome if you just want something to pop-up off the card and not wiggle. Her tutorial video is about 15 minutes along, so if you just want to see the DIY pop-up portion, that part starts at the 10:13 mark. I finally got around to digging out my mini action wobblers to make a card for this challenge. I've had these things for three or four years, but this was my first time opening the package to use one. Oops!  Now that I've got the first one under my belt, I want to make some more because they really are a lot of fun. I think kids would definitely love getting a pop-up card for Christmas or their birthday, even "young at heart" kids. Here are a couple of photos showing my card. My little snowman was so small, I actually had to trim down some of the mini action wobbler because it was too big. LOL I also have a quick 10 second video uploaded to my Flickr account.   |
